The inner man as opposed to the outer man is a Pauline and Lutheran commonplace that is too frequently taken out of context, leading historians of the Renaissance in general, and of Spanish Renaissance religion in particular, to value references to internal (or mental) methods of spirituality as an improvement over external (or bodily) rituals. This book takes its cue from the recent 'cognitive turn' in medieval studies that complicates studies of the body in religion by focusing on the embodied aspects of cognition, claiming a continuum between body and soul rather than a hierarchy. I argue that medieval theories of cognition made the divorce of the body from the soul impossible for a Galenic doctor, even one who spoke of the body and the world with contempt, and by implication impossible for his Castilian audience. The essays in the earlier volume argued that some mystical experiences do not seem to be formed or shaped by the language system--a thesis that stands in sharp contradistinction to deconstruction in general and to the "constructivist" school of mysticism in particular, which holds that all mysticism is the product of a cultural and linguistic process. In The Innate Capacity, Forman and his colleagues put forward a hypothesis about the formative causes of these "pure consciousness" experiences. All of the contributors agree that mysticism is the result of an innate human capacity, rather than a learned, socially conditioned and constructive process. The innate capacity is understood in several different ways. Many perceive it as an expression of human consciousness per se, awareness itself. Some hold that consciousness should be understood as a built-in link to some hidden, transcendent aspect of the world, and that a mystical experience is the experience of that inherent connectedness. Another thesis that appears frequently is that mystics realize this innate capacity through a process of releasing the hold of the ego and the conceptual system. The contributors here look at mystical experience as it is manifested in a variety of religious and cultural settings, including Hindu Yoga, Buddhism, Sufism, and medieval Christianity. Taken together, the essays constitute an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the nature of human consciousness and mystical experience and its relation to the social and cultural contexts in which it appears.

Book excerpt: A dark cloud hanging over all spiritual thought today is the view that findings in modern science prove that all spiritual experience is simply "generated" by the brain. This view is only a natural reflection of the concept that all consciousness, to include our visual experience of the external world, is equally simply so "brain-generated." This book challenges the roots of this view in current conceptions in cognitive science, neuroscience, neural network theory and artificial intelligence, robotics, consciousness theory, evolutionary theory and physics. In consciousness theory, this is the yet unresolved "hard problem" and basic misconceptions inherent in the classical model of space and time in which this problem rests. In cognitive science and artificial intelligence, this is the problem of accounting for the fundamental cognitive operation of analogy and the highly related, yet nearly abandoned problem of "commonsense knowledge" with its hitherto unrealized impact on the theory of evolution. In physics, this is a deeply flawed interpretation of relativity and its concepts of time. An alternative model of mind is described here based in the prescient theory - already holographic, but never penetrated or understood by past or current philosophy - developed by the great French philosopher, Henri Bergson in 1896. Far from being a computer, the brain is seen as a radically different "device" residing in a non-classical, non-relativistic model of time. Within this framework is a profound model of the origin of the image of the external world, and required for this, the relation of subject and object is seen not in terms of space, but of time. Inherent too is an entirely new model of the operations of memory retrieval based in this holographic model and rooted in the findings of ecological psychology, but where experience is not (and cannot be) stored in the brain. The discussion is intended as a concrete, useable theoretical point of entry for the hitherto missing role of consciousness in (computer) models of cognition, and for fundamental questions in perception, the operation of memory and the nature of analogical thought discussed and researched by the academic world today. Simultaneously, this view contains a natural, scientific mysticism which supports the deep insights of the mystics.

He does this by viewing unitive thinking as a line of cognitive development, and mystical moments as creative inspirations on unitive topics. Utilizing classical self-reports by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim mystics, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and modern Western peak experiences, Merkur argues that experiences of mystical union are manifestations of a broader category of psychological processes that manifest in scientific and moral thought, as well as in mysticism. Unconscious as well as conscious, unitive thinking is sometimes realistic and sometimes fantastic, in patterns that are consistent with cognitive development in general. Mystical moments of unitive thinking may be considered moments of creative inspiration that happen to make use of unitive ideas. Building on the psychoanalytic object-relations theory that the self is always in relationship with an object, Merkur argues that the solipsism of some varieties of mystical union always implies unconscious ideas of a love object who is transcendent.
