Book Synopsis The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries by : Zsuzsanna Budapest
Download or read book The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries written by Zsuzsanna Budapest and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A women's spirituality classic now back in print! The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries is essential for Pagans, feminists, and women seeking to learn more about the spiritual path as it relates to the feminine and the Goddess aspects of witchcraft and Wicca. This book is not about reinstating a matriarchy or tearing down patriarchy; it is about women's spirituality and its relationship with politics and lifestyle. Z. Budapest is one of the founding mothers of modern women's witchcraft, beginning with the establishment of Susan B. Anthony Coven in Los Angeles in 1971. She catapulted herself into the media spotlight when she was tried as a witch and found guilty in 1975 after being arrested on Venice Beach for reading tarot cards. She fought the charges and, after a nine year battle, won the right for every tarot reader to do so legally. The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries is a seminal text that contains invaluable information on Dianic witchcraft and spells, including everyday magick, sabbat rituals, and divination methods; a section on how vegetarian theories and politics relate to witchcraft and the feminine aspect; and a good deal of information on goddesses and how the patriarchal religions distorted old myths to serve their own needs. There are several unique and beautiful Rites of Passage for women and men that you don't often find, and Budapest's personal life stories are an equally valuable read, from her escape across the mountains from Communist Hungary to her fight for women's religious freedom upon moving to America. * This reprint features a new introduction by Z. Budapest, in addition to essays by luminaries such as Starhawk and Merlin Stone.
Book Synopsis Men, Women, and the Mystery of Love by : Edward Sri
Download or read book Men, Women, and the Mystery of Love written by Edward Sri and published by Franciscan Media. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr. Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II’s name before he became the pontiff in 1978) published Love and Responsibility in 1960. It revealed his fully formed philosophy of marriage and sheds light on the dynamics between men and women. Some consider his analysis of the true meaning of human love as life changing and practical, shedding light on real issues between men and women. This updated and expanded edition of Edward Sri’s classic meditation on Pope John Paul II’s Love and Responsibility includes a new introduction, new chapters for single people and engaged couples, and maybe most importantly the stories of people whose lives have been transformed by Pope John Paul II’s foundational teaching on relationships. “Edward Sri is a gifted teacher and an equally talented writer. This book shows why. He breaks open Karol Wojtyla's great text, Love and Responsibility, in a way that's clear, engaging and very practical for the challenges of daily life.” – Charles J. Chaput, OFM, Archbishop of Philadelphia. In Men, Women and the Mystery of Love, Edward Sri breaks down the contents of John Paul’s epic work, making it more accessible to the reader. It isn’t a manual on sexual ethics, more so a no-nonsense discussion on issues we face as couples. He emphasizes the down-to-earth nature of Love and Responsibility, giving readers actionable advice on issues like: How to determine if a relationship is one of authentic love or is doomed to failure; The problem of pornography; The meaning of friendship; How to achieve greater intimacy in marriage; The difference between feeling “I’m in love” and love itself; and so many other valuable questions. While this book is a great personal resource, it also can be used in a variety of situations like small group studies, marriage preparation classes, and other parish settings. It offers valuable advice for just about everyone, from young single adults and engaged couples to newlyweds and couples celebrating their 35th anniversary. Study questions with each chapter make this a valuable resource not only for individual personal reading, but also for small group study.

Download or read book Mysteries of Sex written by Mary P. Ryan and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a sweeping synthesis of American history, Mary Ryan demonstrates how the meaning of male and female has evolved, changed, and varied over a span of 500 years and across major social and ethnic boundaries. She traces how, at select moments in history, perceptions of sex difference were translated into complex and mutable patterns for differentiating women and men. How those distinctions were drawn and redrawn affected the course of American history more generally. Ryan recounts the construction of a modern gender regime that sharply divided male from female and created modes of exclusion and inequity. The divide between male and female blurred in the twentieth century, as women entered the public domain, massed in the labor force, and revolutionized private life. This transformation in gender history serves as a backdrop for seven chronological chapters, each of which presents a different problem in American history as a quandary of sex. Ryan's bold analysis raises the possibility that perhaps, if understood in their variety and mutability, the differences of sex might lose the sting of inequality.

Book Synopsis Engines of Desire by : Livia Llewellyn
Download or read book Engines of Desire written by Livia Llewellyn and published by Lethe Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death and pleasure. Freud's Todestrieb, his statement that "libido has the task of making the destroying instinct innocuous, and it fulfills the task by diverting that instinct to a great extent outwards.... The instinct is then called the destructive instinct, the instinct for mastery, or the will to power." Few authors have spun stories of Thanatos and Eros as skillfully and powerfully as Livia Llewellyn. In his introduction to this volume, Laird Barron writes, "Scant difference exists between exquisite pleasure and pain." An orphan girl with a mind for anthracite falls into the hands of a cult worshipping an entombed god. In the Pacific Northwest, evergreens lull prepubescent girls into their trunks to serve as wombs. A suburban housewife troubled by her present encounters the sixteen-year-old girl she ached to touch in her dreams. These ten stories promise to indulge a reader's sensibilities, fears, and desires. A finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award in two categories: Best Novella and Best Collection!
Book Synopsis The Mystery of Adam by : Edith Neumaier
Download or read book The Mystery of Adam written by Edith Neumaier and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many people still believe that the first human being was a man? If the Bible shows that the first earth creature God created was male and female and that the woman was formed from the side, not the rib, then biblical gender equality has to be accepted as a fact, and the subordination of women needs to be acknowledged as the result of sin. The original Hebrew word that was translated as rib is sela. An accurate translation of this word should be side. Because the first woman was formed from the side and all ingredients (bone and flesh) were taken from the first human being, the man and the woman have common origin. God called both the first man and the first woman Adam (Genesis 5:2). However, after the Fall, the man kept the name Adam, which is the Hebrew word for human being, for himself and renamed the woman. By doing so, he stole humanity from the woman (and consequently from all women) and reduced her to the role of being the mother of all living, which is the translation of the Hebrew word Eve. The ruling of the man over the woman was not Gods intention, but the result of sin (Genesis 3:16). What happened in Genesis 3:16 was corrected in John 3:16. John tells us, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. This promise was made to the whole Adam, not only the male part. God redeems both the man and the woman equally. Now we do not live under sin anymore, but under grace. Therefore, Paul can write in Galatians 3:2729, For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abrahams descendants, heirs according to promise. This promise belongs to both the man and the woman. Christ reunites the male and the female again as one and calls both of them Adam.

Download or read book The End of Men written by Hanna Rosin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential reading for our times, as women are pulling together to demand their rights— A landmark portrait of women, men, and power in a transformed world. “Anchored by data and aromatized by anecdotes, [Rosin] concludes that women are gaining the upper hand." –The Washington Post Men have been the dominant sex since, well, the dawn of mankind. But Hanna Rosin was the first to notice that this long-held truth is, astonishingly, no longer true. Today, by almost every measure, women are no longer gaining on men: They have pulled decisively ahead. And “the end of men”—the title of Rosin’s Atlantic cover story on the subject—has entered the lexicon as dramatically as Betty Friedan’s “feminine mystique,” Simone de Beauvoir’s “second sex,” Susan Faludi’s “backlash,” and Naomi Wolf’s “beauty myth” once did. In this landmark book, Rosin reveals how our current state of affairs is radically shifting the power dynamics between men and women at every level of society, with profound implications for marriage, sex, children, work, and more. With wide-ranging curiosity and insight unhampered by assumptions or ideology, Rosin shows how the radically different ways men and women today earn, learn, spend, couple up—even kill—has turned the big picture upside down. And in The End of Men she helps us see how, regardless of gender, we can adapt to the new reality and channel it for a better future.
