Book excerpt: WARNING: THIS IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER TRAINING BOOK.It will show you how to train any dog, irrespective of age, breed, or past experiences, very quickly and with methods that work using the dog's natural instincts. The training is balanced using both positive and negative reinforcement that not only trains superbly but also increases the bond between dog and owner. Many people have now come to realise that purely positive training methods rarely work for problem behaviours. You can't stop aggression or fix a poor recall with treats or a word of praise. The author has years of experience not only training dogs but specifically in stopping problem behaviours that many books do not care to mention. Problems such as chasing (cars, cyclists, animals, etc), aggression, digging, shyness, pulling, barking, recall, house training, jumping up on people are tackled head-on and easily fixed, quickly and effectively. The author has successfully rehabilitated dozens of dogs that were in the last chance saloon and would have been put to sleep if his training was ineffective. He has a unique perspective that cuts to the chase in dealing with any problem. Take problem recall for example. Most owners will see this as the dog running off. Whilst this is true, the author sees it primarily that the dog doesn't know or care where her owner is. This is the reason for the problem. If you train the dog to be attentive to your movements, then she will not run away. Do you see the distinction? You will also be shown how to effectively train a new range of useful behaviours such as; Leave, Take, Fetch, walk without pulling, watchdog training, Recall, easy house training, and much more. These things can be taught easily and in a very quick time, unlike traditional methods that are typically time-consuming. Reinforcement training is not new, but the way Mark uses it and teaches it is completely different from anything you'll have experienced before. The dog learns very quickly and remembers each exercise. He/she will also display an enthusiasm for training that needs to be seen to be believed. Mark Telford tells and shows you that problem behaviour is actually easier to stop and takes less time than training new behaviours. If this seems alien to your thinking and experience thus far, this book is definitely for you. The psychology behind each exercise is easily explained and also the reason why the methodology works. At first glance, it may seem that this is a book for beginners. That couldn't be farther from the truth. The book is written so that anyone, even those with very limited training experience can use it. It is written both simply and comprehensively. Many people will read this book and become trainers themselves if they apply themselves to the teaching and the exercises. The book reveals the secrets of dog training that professional dog trainers do not want you to know. Whatever your level of experience, there is something for everybody in this book. Possibly, 90% of pet owners fail to understand adequately how a dog thinks. This book, whilst primarily a training book, explains why people so often go wrong when training by failing to understand how the dog thinks. You will develop the right mindset necessary to train quickly and effectively. Over the past twenty years or so there has been a huge movement towards purely positive methods of dog training. It would be fantastic if all problem behaviours could be fixed with treats and praise, but the brutal truth is that this is not the case and millions of people that have bought purely positive books expecting this to fix their problems have been left disillusioned, disheartened and cheated when these books either ignore real problems or fail to deliver solutions that work. This book uses positive/variable reinforcement for training new behaviours, balancing that with negative reinforcement for problem behaviours. "THE BEST TRAINING BOOK IN YEARS, BAR NONE". Dog Training Weekly.

Rich Samonte did, and you will follow him through training as well as the exciting experiences he encountered in the twelve years he drove for Greyhound. Every reader will get the chance to sit in the driver’s seat and vicariously drive along the highway. Learn what it is like to be a Greyhound driver. About the Author Rich Samonte is a retired language art/social studies middle school teacher since 2000 who enjoys writing. This is his second book to be published among dozens of short stories while working on another manuscript about his wife’s struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. This book is mainly a narrative of his Greyhound 12 years of his summer and winter driving career while he was teaching. It is chronologically written following the many times he sacrificed his time away from his family to supplement his teaching income, helping to make a living, and attempting to fulfill the “American Dream.” Other than writing, he keeps busy practicing/teaching Filipino martial arts, Karate, and tap dancing. For relaxation he drives “his other car,” a Porsche.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book about a dog. I really do prefer my husband—honest. But it’s hard to tell the story of our journey into the empty nest, and leave out one particular animal. Which kind of illustrates the problem. It is November 2009, and after mourning the loss of Arrow, their beloved Australian shepherd mutt, Susan and David Morse and family are finally ready to adopt a new dog. David’s acting jobs keep him away from home for long stretches of time, the last two teenagers are on their way to college, and this time it’s Susan’s turn to pick the dog. She probably should have thought a little more carefully before falling for a retired racing greyhound. Enter Lilly, who lands like a disoriented neutron bomb in Susan’s comfortable suburban home after living the first three years of her life in the rugged and ruthless world of the racetrack. Instantly lovable but hopelessly inept at domesticity, Lilly turns out to be more than Susan bargained for, throwing all Susan and David’s plans for their long-anticipated, footloose empty-nest years into complete disarray. In The Dog Stays in the Picture, Susan Morse tells the hilarious and moving story of how an anxious dog and a high-strung woman find tranquility together.

Book excerpt: The Educational Significance of Human and Non-Human Animal Interactions explores human animal/non-human animal interactions from different disciplinary perspectives, from education policy to philosophy of education and ecopedagogy. The authors refute the idea of anthropocentrism (the belief that human beings are the central or most significant species on the planet) through an ethical investigation into animal and human interactions, and 'real-life' examples of humans and animals living and learning together. In doing so, Rice and Rud outline the idea that interactions between animals and humans are educationally significant and vital in the classroom.

Book excerpt: Thirty-five-year-old James Kingman is in uncharted territory. His wife, Megan, and their daughter, Maddie, were killed by a drunk driver, and he is ill-equipped for the messy process of grieving. Preferring not to wallow in self-pity, James tries to escape the reminders of his past by relocating to northern Idaho. At first glance, it appears this coping strategy may be working. A productive rhythm returns to James's life as he occupies his mind with a busy work schedule at the Idaho Attorney General's Office. He finds additional and renewed purpose when he champions the cause of a local minority student brutally attacked by members of a local hate group. Colleagues urge James to proceed with caution in his crusade against a group known for violent tactics. James dismisses their concerns. He has never been one to back down from a good and righteous fight, and he isn't going to start now. Following the loss of his wife and daughter, he simply has nothing to lose. Everything changes when an unforeseen romance with fellow attorney Julie Langdon adds renewed vulnerability to James's life. Abducted by the leader of the local supremacist group, Julie becomes a pawn intended to force James to back down from attempts to prosecute the group. Forced to make a decision to abandon a trusting and traumatized coed or risk losing Julie, he is determined to find another solution.

This informative and brutally honest book shows exactly what it's like, the dogs, the bloodlines, the work, the owners, the joys, successes, training, breeding, the trials, tribulations, problems, etc. Full of factual stories and really gives the true inside story of what it's like to earn a living from Greyhounds in Ireland. Told as a narrative, it flows from one page to the next in an easy, conversational style.Mark was a greyhound breeder, trainer, rearer and Stud-keeper in Ireland for many years. He handled Brett Lee's brother Trendy Leigh at stud and also Toll Security and Elles Dominator, amongst others. He considers himself more a breeder than a trainer, but in Ireland you need to do everything to make it pay and had success in both. He trained a dog that broke the TR at Mullingar over 600 yards. A man of strong opinions, he's not afraid to speak out about any greyhound issue. He's not interested in political correctness, unlike many big name trainers who put pen to paper.

Book excerpt: David Matthews, author of the critically acclaimed LOOKING FOR A FIGHT, needed a fresh challenge after he had recovered from being a professional boxer. Drawn to the slightly shady appeal of greyhound racing, and not averse to making some easy money, he decided to learn the tricks of the trade from the inside and buy a greyhound. Unfortunately Zussies Boy, aka Kevin, turned out to be something of a dud, and Matthews soon found out the hard way that in the world of greyhound racing there is only one winner - the hare.
