Book excerpt: A New York Times Best Illustrated Book From highly acclaimed author Jenkins and Caldecott Medal–winning illustrator Blackall comes a fascinating picture book in which four families, in four different cities, over four centuries, make the same delicious dessert: blackberry fool. This richly detailed book ingeniously shows how food, technology, and even families have changed throughout American history. In 1710, a girl and her mother in Lyme, England, prepare a blackberry fool, picking wild blackberries and beating cream from their cow with a bundle of twigs. The same dessert is prepared by an enslaved girl and her mother in 1810 in Charleston, South Carolina; by a mother and daughter in 1910 in Boston; and finally by a boy and his father in present-day San Diego. Kids and parents alike will delight in discovering the differences in daily life over the course of four centuries. Includes a recipe for blackberry fool and notes from the author and illustrator about their research.

THE PRINCESS Forced to marry one of the sons of the man who had conquered her family’s castle, Princess Brianna issues a seemingly impossible challenge: He who returns with a gift that makes her laugh will win her hand. Burke and Rowan, knights both, set out at her command. Only Luc Fitzgavin remains, refusing to indulge the glorious Irish princess. Even Brianna’s legendary beauty cannot tempt him—until she invades his senses . . . and his soul. THE DAMSEL Once upon a time, Burke Fitzgavin galloped into Kiltorren Castle and fell in love with Alys, the lord’s orphaned niece—only to be sent away through tricks and lies. When Burke returns to Kiltorren, his long-lost love has become a servant on her uncle’s estate, paying penance for their long-ago embrace. Even as Burke slowly rekindles her desire, Alys’s family attempts to thwart him. Thus begins Burke’s greatest challenge ever: the battle to win the hand and the heart of his one true love. THE HEIRESS No woman can resist Rowan de Montvieux, but the dashing rogue has set out to wed only the wealthiest heiress in Ireland. When a slave merchant offers to sell him a ragged peasant girl who carries herself like a queen, Rowan suspects she can lead him to the bride he seeks—never imagining she is the sought-after Bronwyn of Ballyroyal. But their perilous voyage kindles passions that risk both their lives, as the beautiful, defiant slave girl slowly takes possession of his wary heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweet Chariot is a pathbreaking analysis of slave families and household composition in the nineteenth-century South. Ann Malone presents a carefully drawn picture of the ways in which slaves were constituted into families and households within a community and shows how and why that organization changed through the years. Her book, based on massive research, is both a statistical study over time of 155 slave communities in twenty-six Louisiana parishes and a descriptive study of three plantations: Oakland, Petite Anse, and Tiger Island. Malone first provides a regional analysis of family, household, and community organization. Then, drawing on qualitative sources, she discusses patterns in slave family household organization, identifying the most significant ones as well as those that consistantly acted as indicators of change. Malone shows that slave community organization strongly reflected where each community was in its own developmental cycle, which in turn was influenced by myriad factors, ranging from impersonal economic conditions to the arbitrary decisions of individual owners. She also projects a statistical model that can be used for comparisons with other populations. The two persistent themes that Malone uncovers are the mutability and yet the constancy of Louisiana slave household organization. She shows that the slave family and its extensions, the slave household and community, were far more diverse and adaptable than previously believed. The real strength of the slave comunity was its multiplicity of forms, its tolerance for a variety of domestic units and its adaptability. She finds, for example, that the preferred family form consisted of two parents and children but that all types of families and households were accepted as functioning and contributing members of the slave community. "Louisiana slaves had a well-defined and collective vision of the structure that would serve them best and an iron determination to attain it, " Malone observes. "But along with this constancy in vision and perseverance was flexibility. Slave domestic forms in Louisiana bent like willows in the wind to keep from shattering. The suppleness of their forms prevented domestic chaos and enabled most slave communities to recover from even serious crises."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for readers of Mary Balogh and Eloisa James, hailed as “daringly sexy and romantic as hell” by Delilah Marvelle, the Disgraced Lords series has taken Regency fans by storm. Featuring audacious heroines, imaginative marriage plots, and a brotherhood of dashing gentleman rakes known as the Libertine Scholars, these novels demand to be read straight through. And now the first three—A Kiss of Lies, A Promise of More, and A Touch of Passion (with a bonus preview of A Whisper of Desire!)—are together in one irresistible eBook bundle. A KISS OF LIES Desperate to escape her abusive past, Sarah Cooper disguises herself as a governess in the employ of Christian Trent, Earl of Markham, a man she once fantasized about marrying. A governess, however, has no business in the arms of an earl, and Sarah must resist her desires—or risk revealing dangerous secrets. Before the horrors of Waterloo and his forcible removal from England, Christian enjoyed the company of any woman he chose. Now he believes he will never be happy again . . . until Sarah sparks his heart back to life, and makes him remember the man he used to be. A PROMISE OF MORE When Beatrice Hennessey confronts the rogue who killed her brother in a duel, she intends to blackmail him into a marriage of convenience. But while greeting his ship, Beatrice takes a tumble into the Thames—only to be fished out by a pair of strong masculine arms that belong to Sebastian Hawkestone, Lord Coldhurst himself. To both their surprise, Sebastian finds the proposition quite agreeable. A wife who hates him is far too sensible to expect romance. However, it isn’t long before Sebastian’s plan unravels in the exhilarating undertow of seduction. A TOUCH OF PASSION When high-spirited Lady Portia Flagstaff takes one unnecessary risk too many, she’s kidnapped and sold into an Arabian harem. Now her freedom depends on the deliciously packaged Grayson Devlin, Viscount Blackwood, a man who despises her reckless ways—and stirs in her a thirst for passion. Years ago, Grayson Devlin promised Portia’s dying brother that he’d always watch over his wayward sister. But Grayson’s dashing rescue has unleashed an unforeseen consequence: marriage. Now it isn’t just Portia he must protect . . . it’s his battered heart. Praise for the Disgraced Lords series “Bronwen Evans’s historical romances always make the top of my reading list!”—New York Times bestselling author Jen McLaughlin “This tale is poignant, heartwarming, and readers may be reaching for the Kleenex once or twice before the breathtaking ending.”—RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 stars), on A Kiss of Lies “A page-turning, sensual adventure.”—New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Boyle, on A Promise of More “Wickedly witty and deeply romantic, A Touch of Passion is full of emotion and rich in sensuality.”—USA Today bestselling author Nicola Cornick “Bronwen Evans spins a sexy romp in A Touch of Passion, as a lord who doesn’t dare love is locked in passionate battle with a woman who will accept nothing less. Book excerpt: An enchanting, hypnotic trilogy of witchcraft, adventure, and romance from the beloved author of Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat, The Mayfair Witches is a wondrous journey through the centuries, across the globe, and between the human and demonic worlds. Now all three novels in Anne Rice’s spellbinding series have been collected for the first time in this stunning eBook bundle: THE WITCHING HOUR LASHER TALTOS On the screened porch of a great New Orleans house, now faded, a mute and fragile woman sits rocking. She belongs to a legendary dynasty of witches—a family that is itself haunted over the ages by a dangerous and seductive being named Lasher. Their story begins in our time, with a rescue at sea. Rowan Mayfair, a brilliant neurosurgeon aware of her abilities but oblivious to her ancient line, finds the drowned body of Michael Curry off the coast of California and brings him to life. In his brief interval of death, he has acquired a sensory power that mystifies and frightens him. Fiercely drawn to each other, Rowan and Michael set out to solve the mystery of her past and his unwelcome gift, and an intricate tale of evil unfolds: an evil unleashed in seventeenth-century Scotland, where the first “witch,” Suzanne of the Mayfair, conjures up the spirit that spells her own destruction and torments each of her descendants in turn. Praise for Anne Rice and The Mayfair Witches “Behind all the velvet drapes and the gossamer winding sheets, this is an old-fashioned family saga. . . . Rice’s descriptive writing is so opulent that it almost begs to be read [by] candlelight.”—The Washington Post Book World “[A] huge and sprawling tale of horror.”—The New York Times Book Review “Lush prose, dense atmosphere, steamy sex, Gothic tension . . . Rice stages her scenes in a wide variety of times and locales, tapping deeply into the richest veins of mythology and history.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Spellbinding . . . mythical . . . Rice is a pure storyteller.”—Cosmopolitan “Rice sees things on a grand scale. . . . There is a wide-screen historical sweep to the tale as it moves from one generation of witches to the other.”—The Boston Globe “An intricate, stunning imagination.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review “It is hard to praise sufficiently the originality of Miss Rice. . . . She has made a masterpiece of the morbid, worthy of Poe’s daughter.”—The Wall Street Journal

Book excerpt: Painting a vivid picture of the original peoples of North America, long before European colonization changed the face of the continent, the Algonquin Quest novels show the traditions, the legends and the intrigue that shaped the First Nations. For Mahingan and his family, caught in the middle of a defining conflict with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), warfare is a part of life, but so are the natural world and the rich web of culture he shares with allies like the Omàmiwinini (Algonquin), the Ouendat (Huron), and the Nippissing. Includes I Am Algonquin This novel follows the story of a warrior named Mahingan and his family as they live the traditional Algonquin way of life long before Europeans arrived in North America. Hunting and warfare are daily concerns, and signs point to a defining conflict between Mahingan's nation and its enemies. Algonquin Spring Six years ago, Mahingan’s wife was taken from him by the Haudenosaunee at the Battle of the Falls. Now, after learning that she is still alive and captive, he and his remaining family struggle to survive and rescue her. But events 2,000 kilometres away, and a mysterious Mi’kmaq legend, are conspiring in ways that could snatch away Mahingan’s hopes. Algonquin Sunset Set twelve years after the events of Algonquin Spring, this book follows the now-grown Anokì, his sister Pangì Mahingan, and the rest of their family as they face a new enemy: the Lakȟóta.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAINT ROBERT BELLARMINE COLLECTION [3 BOOKS] Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J. was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. He was a professor of theology and later rector of the Roman College, and in 1602 became archbishop of Capua. Bellarmine supported the reform decrees of the Council of Trent. He was canonized in 1930 and named a Doctor of the Church. Bellarmine is also widely remembered for his role in the Giordano Bruno affair and the Galileo affair. Bellarmine's books bear the stamp of their period; the effort for literary elegance had given place to a desire to pile up as much material as possible, to embrace the whole field of human knowledge, and incorporate it into theology. His controversial works provoked many replies, and were studied for some decades after his death. At Leuven he made extensive studies in the Church Fathers and scholastic theologians, which gave him the material for his book De scriptoribus ecclesiasticis (Rome, 1613). It was later revised and enlarged by Sirmond, Labbeus, and Casimir Oudin. Bellarmine wrote the preface to the new Sixto-Clementine Vulgate. —BOOKS— A COMMENTARY ON THE BOOK OF PSALMS STEPS OF ASCENSION TO GOD THE ART OF DYING WELL PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Book excerpt: Fifteen years after its hardcover debut, the FSG Classics reissue of the celebrated work of narrative nonfiction that won the National Book Award and changed the American conversation about race, with a new preface by the author The Ball family hails from South Carolina—Charleston and thereabouts. Their plantations were among the oldest and longest-standing plantations in the South. Between 1698 and 1865, close to four thousand black people were born into slavery under the Balls or were bought by them. In Slaves in the Family, Edward Ball recounts his efforts to track down and meet the descendants of his family's slaves. Part historical narrative, part oral history, part personal story of investigation and catharsis, Slaves in the Family is, in the words of Pat Conroy, "a work of breathtaking generosity and courage, a magnificent study of the complexity and strangeness and beauty of the word ‘family.'"
