It has been assumed for a long time that this Amu invasion occurred around 2000 BC. Yet the Bible seems to indicate that Moses and the Israelites fled Egypt around 1500 BC. Thus we must deduct some five hundred years from events stated as happening so much earlier. There are of course many more reasons for assuming this fact. Then some four hundred years later, a rebellion by Upper Egypt, and later, Pharaoh Ahmose and Thutmose I freed Egypt from the Amu and went on to crown Princess Makere Hatshepsut as the only female pharaoh. It appears that Adler is a Keeper—a soul from a different existence who comes into the metaphysical world to provide guidance for fellow humans. Their friendship is then challenged by both physical and metaphysical elements that influence the course of their lives. Reading Don't Let Me Go will make you wish that the story never ends, but you also want Joanie and Adler to find the meaning that they have been looking for. The father of military alcoholism treatment tells about his own life and recovery from alcoholism, and describes how he set up the first officially sanctioned military treatment programs for alcoholics in the 1940s and 50s, when the Alcoholics Anonymous movement was first spreading across the United States. A survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he almost died after the war from his own out-of-control drinking. Using his own recovery as a guide, he persuaded the Air Force to appoint him full time to working with other alcoholics. The success story which he and psychiatrist Dr. Louis Jolyon West related in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 1956 was distributed all across the country by the National Council on Alcoholism.
