Book Synopsis Franco Lives On by : Lluc Salellas i Vilar
Download or read book Franco Lives On written by Lluc Salellas i Vilar and published by Edicions Saldonar. This book was released on 2018-12-22 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franco Lives On traces the birth of democracy in Spain in 1978 after forty years under Franco's dictatorship. It reveals the hidden side of what happened during the Spanish Transition. This study is the key to understanding the opaque workings of justice and the incapability of dialogue shown by the political powers in Madrid in recent years in response to challenges such as the referendum in Catalonia or the demise of ETA. What became of Franco's ministers after the arrival of the new Spanish Constitution? Were they driven out of the corridors of power or did they stay there and add to their wealth and political influence? The answers can be found in this book, which spotlights how the political elite in Spain have lacked the capacity for renewal seen in other European Union States. The author, Lluc Salellas i Vilar, has produced an extensive piece of investigative journalism on the families and individuals who wielded greatest influence during the dictatorship and the role which they and their relatives have continued to play ever since.

Book Synopsis The Max Planck Handbooks in European Public Law by : Armin von Bogdandy
Download or read book The Max Planck Handbooks in European Public Law written by Armin von Bogdandy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-16 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Max Planck Handbooks in European Public Law describe and analyse public law of the European legal space, an area that encompasses not only the law of the European Union but also the European Convention on Human Rights and, importantly, the domestic public laws of European states. Recognizing that the ongoing vertical and horizontal processes of European integration make legal comparison the task of our time for both scholars and practitioners, the series aims to foster the development of a specifically European legal pluralism and to contribute to the legitimacy and efficiency of European public law. The first volume of the series began this enterprise with an appraisal of the evolution of the state and its administration, offering both cross-cutting contributions and specific country reports. The third volume (the second in chronological terms) continues this approach with an in-depth appraisal of constitutional adjudication in various and diverse European countries. Fourteen country reports and two cross-cutting contributions investigate the antecedents, foundations, organization, procedure, and outlook of constitutional adjudicators throughout the Continent. They include countries with powerful constitutional courts, jurisdictions with traditional supreme courts, and states with small institutions and limited ex ante review. In keeping with the focus on a diverse but unified legal space, each report also details how its institution fits into the broader association of constitutional courts that, through dialogue and conflict, brings to fruition the European legal space. Together, the chapters of this volume provide a strong and diverse foundation for this dialogue to flourish.

Book Synopsis Don Quixote's Delusions by : Miranda France
Download or read book Don Quixote's Delusions written by Miranda France and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humorous and affectionate look at modern Spain, and a celebration of the country's greatest book, from the pen of a brilliant young writer. When in 1987 Miranda France spent a year living in Madrid, the post-dictatorship ebullience was at its height. Pornography and soft drugs were legalised alongside more basic freedoms, such as divorce, party-affiliation and kissing in the street. In 1998 she returned to make a journey through the great cities and towns of central Spain - Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca and others. With the new prosperity, much has changed. But much has also endured, as she learns from the people she meets, who include a private detective, a shepherd, various nuns, two belly dancers and a Castilian separatist. She also discovers that Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE' published in 1605 and the most translated book after the Bible - is a work of genius which still helps to explain the Spanish character: today's Spaniards still suffer from Don Quixote's delusions, and are as stubborn, inflexible and unrealistic as they have always been.

Book Synopsis The Constitution of Spain by : Victor Ferreres Comella
Download or read book The Constitution of Spain written by Victor Ferreres Comella and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical introduction to the principles and institutions that make up the Spanish Constitution, which was enacted in 1978. It first explains the process of transition from Franco's dictatorship to democracy, in order to understand the historical circumstances under which the Constitution was framed. After offering a theory to justify the authority of the Constitution over ordinary laws, the book proceeds to explain the basic principles of the Spanish political regime, as well as the structure of its complex legal system. Later chapters focus on various institutions, such as the Crown, Parliament and the Government. A specific chapter is devoted to the territorial distribution of power between the State, the regions and local government. The last two chapters deal with the constitutional role of courts, and the protection of fundamental rights. The book includes some reflections on the challenges that lie ahead and the constitutional reforms that may need to be considered in the future.

Book Synopsis Pedro the Cruel of Castile (1350-1369) by : Estow
Download or read book Pedro the Cruel of Castile (1350-1369) written by Estow and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work deals with the reign of Pedro I of Castile (1350-1369), known as “The Cruel,” one of the most notorious and misunderstood figures in the annals of peninsular history. This is the first book on the subject that analyzes Pedro's rule in light of social, political, diplomatic, and economic conditions in mid-14th century Castile. Using extant primary documentation from archival sources and the most recent findings of scholars from various fields, the book explores in detail the historical basis for Pedro's reputation and the extent to which this reputation unfairly rests on the testimony of Pero López de Ayala, the reign's principal chronicler. The book provides fresh insights into various aspects of Pedro's career, such as his political aims, relations with religious minorities, and fiscal policies.

Book Synopsis The Constantinian Order of Saint George by : Guy Stair Sainty
Download or read book The Constantinian Order of Saint George written by Guy Stair Sainty and published by Boletín Oficial del Estado. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to legend the Constantinian Order is the oldest chivalric institution, founded by Emperor Constantine the Great and governed by successive Byzantine Emperors and their descendants. While this chronology was supported by multiple writers even into the twentieth century, it has little historical basis. Nonetheless, the Angeli, Farnese and Bourbon families which held the Grand Mastership could legitimately claim Byzantine imperial descent, albeit in the female line, and the Order’s cross replicates that seen by Constantine in the vision recorded by both Lactantius and Eusebius, writing very soon after Maximian’s defeat at the battle of the Milvian Bridge. The Order’s emergence in the middle of the sixteenth century, when Christian Europe was under assault from a militant Ottoman empire, gained Papal support almost immediately and by the end of the seventeenth century the Order had mem-bers across the Italian peninsular, in Spain, Bavaria, Austria and Bohemia, Croatia and Poland. Today the majority of the Order’s members are found in Italy and Spain but there are also members in Portugal, France, Belgium, Great Britain and Luxembourg, with smaller groups in the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden as well as an expanding membership in the United States. This work examines the conversion of Constantine and the histories of the Angeli, Farnese and Bourbon Grand Masterships, with extensive reference to hitherto unpub-lished documents in the Vatican archives and in the Farnese and Bourbon archives in Naples. These serve to confirm the close relationship the Order had with the Church and the high regard in which it was held by successive Popes, as well as its autonomy as a subject of canon law independent from any crown or temporal sovereignty. This unique status has enabled its hereditary Grand Masters to maintain this dignity after the absorption of the former Kingdom of the Two Sicilies into a united Italy. The Order’s autonomy, coupled with the Grand Master’s close links to the Spanish Crown, has meant that Spanish and Italian citizens (as well as the citizens of several other states which have accorded the Order recognition) may obtain official permission to wear the Order’s decorations. 2018 is the three hundredth anniversary of the Papal Bull Militantis Ecclesiae which confirmed and approved the previous Papal acts concerning the Order and laid out the rights and privileges of the Order, its Grand Masters and members. In the early 20th century Pope Saint Pius X and Benedict XV conferred further privileges on the Order, ap-proving the statutes, while the then future Pope Pius XII had been admitted to the Order in 1913. Today the Order is engaged in works of charity, in conformity with the Church’s teachings, and includes among its members some thirteen Cardinals as well as some thirty members of reign-ing or former reigning families.
Book Synopsis Silent Territory by : Fredrik Laurin
Download or read book Silent Territory written by Fredrik Laurin and published by Lars Schmidt Fredrik Laurin. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT'S AFRICAS LAST COLONY - BUT NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT • On a Saharan desert strip lies a country of enormous natural riches, but whose inhabitants are destitute. Western Sahara has been torn apart by close to forty years of war, occupation and international power struggles. Half of the population lives in Algerian refugee camps. But the world turns a blind eye. The forgotten conflict is closely linked to all of us - we literally have it in our bodies. Western companies buy Sahrawi phosphate, fish and fruit from the Moroccan occupiers, in breach of UN resolutions. • Investigative reporters Fredrik Laurin and Lars Schmidt have visited refugee camps and presidential palaces, met with activists and the UN-envoy, and travelled through endless deserts in search of answers. They show how a small elite controls both the fishing and vegetable industries, and how Swedish and international companies are deeply involved in the exploitation of Western Sahara. Using isotope analysis, they follow the phosphate from the Bou Craa mine to the aisles of our supermarkets. • Will the Sahrawis ever get their freedom? Or are those who profiteer from the occupation too powerful?
