It's just that even though I'm almost fifteen I've been having sort of a hard time trying to figure out the difference between love and lust. It's like my mind and my body and my heart just don't seem to be able to agree on anything.

Book Synopsis The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson: A Novel by : Jerome Charyn

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this brilliant and hilarious jailbreak of a novel, Charyn channels the genius poet and her great leaps of the imagination." —Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred review) Jerome Charyn, "one of the most important writers in American literature" (Michael Chabon), continues his exploration of American history through fiction with The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson, hailed by prize-winning literary historian Brenda Wineapple as a "breathtaking high-wire act of ventriloquism." Channeling the devilish rhythms and ghosts of a seemingly buried literary past, Charyn removes the mysterious veils that have long enshrouded Dickinson, revealing her passions, inner turmoil, and powerful sexuality. The novel, daringly written in first person, begins in the snow. It's 1848, and Emily is a student at Mount Holyoke, with its mournful headmistress and strict, strict rules. Inspired by her letters and poetry, Charyn goes on to capture the occasionally comic, always fevered, ultimately tragic story of her life-from defiant Holyoke seminarian to dying recluse.

From poems pithy, wry, and cutting—“Time—that murderer/that no has caught yet”—to his layered reflections on everything from love to grief to the wonders of nature, from the story of St. Sebastian to that of a couple weeding side by side, Simic’s work continues to reveal to us an unmistakable voice in modern poetry. An innovator in form and a chronicler of both our interior lives and the people we are in the world, Simic remains one of our most important and lasting voices on the page.
Book Synopsis My Secret Corner by : Ruby Hunter Greenlaw
Download or read book My Secret Corner written by Ruby Hunter Greenlaw and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2001-05-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Note from Ruby's co-publisher: I greatly enjoyed preparing the poems for this book and I know they will be enjoyed by any who read them. There is something here for everyone. Ruby has heard from many of her readers over the years, many of them strangers who had to tell her what her poems have meant to them. Many of them were ill or going through an illness with a loved one and found 'solace', the word they often used, in reading her words, many poems dealing with death, dying, and cancer. Often she has been told her first edition of 'My Secret Corner' is always kept by the bedside and worn out from constant use. Some of her poems are lighthearted, some are whimsical, some of them are astute comments on today's society and governments and ring loudly of truth. Some of them tell of her feelings or the feelings of others while going through the death of a loved one. Some tell of her childhood in an island fishing community, remembering everything from carrying pails as a youngster to fill the bath tubs and outdoor 'biffies', the local name for the outdoor 'facilities'. There are love poems and poems of life-long friendships that end with a separation by death. Many of the poems in this edition are new, never published before. Many of them are award winning. All are enjoyable and entertaining. I'm sure any reader will find this book a good read, a book that will be kept nearby to be read again and again. Jan Lister Caldwell Editor Menagerie Publishing
Book Synopsis A Walk in Victoria's Secret by : Kate Daniels
Download or read book A Walk in Victoria's Secret written by Kate Daniels and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With A Walk in Victoria’s Secret, Kate Daniels crafts a bold, brassy, yet delicate vision of a woman’s growth. Imbued with a unique poetic voice that is utterly feminist, these poems possess a fiery intensity for those abuses no woman can ever quite recover from, but also reveal the loving, forgiving temperament of the mother no woman can do without. From the title poem’s unapologetic celebration of the breast to a belated apology to the girl who integrated her elementary school, to the awkward juxtaposition of elderly and young women in a gynecologist’s office on September 11, 2001, Daniels provides a rich array of meditations on what it means to be a woman in our time. Buoyant and entertaining, singular in style, and exuberant in language, A Walk in Victoria’s Secret offers an intimate look at women’s experiences.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Daisy Utemorrah Award Age range 8 to 12 new yearnew classnew teachers Mr Milburn Mrs Szonyi (Zur-Knee)new shoesand shirtssame old bottles green and gold... Meet 11-year-old Bindi. She's not really into maths but LOVES art class and playing hockey. Her absolute FAVOURITE thing is adventuring outside with friends or her horse, Nell. A new year starts like normal -- school, family, hockey, dancing. But this year hasn't gone to plan! There's a big art assignment, a drought, a broken wrist AND the biggest bushfires her town has ever seen! Bindi is a verse novel for mid-upper primary students. Written 'for those who plant trees', Bindi explores climate, bush fires, and healing. Written from the point of view of 11-year-old, Bindi and her friends on Gundungurra Country. 'Multi-award winning author and poet Kirli Saunders turns her talent to junior fiction with this wonderfully engaging verse novel, which won the inaugural WA Premier's Daisy Utemorrah Award...Saunders notes that Bindi is 'in many ways autobiographical' and this is evident in the way she so keenly evokes the sights, sounds and smells of growing up in the country. Indeed, Saunders' intensely evocative prose conjured memories of the long summer evenings, dry grass and petrichor of this reviewer's own country childhood. The seamless interweaving of English and Gundungurra words is wonderful and, although there is a glossary at the back, Saunders' skill at melding the two languages ensures that understanding can be gained from context. With gorgeous black and white illustrations by the esteemed Dub Leffler, Bindi is a must-read for ages seven and up.' -- Hannah Gardiner, Books+Publishing
Download or read book The Secret written by Byron Preiss and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.
