Sitting in a prison cell, he anticipates the birth of his first child while counting the friends he's buried. War of the Bloods in My Veins is part of Morris's redemption, a cry to his brothers that gang life is mental illness. It is a rare and brutally honest look into the relentless storm of abandonment, violence, crime, death, and the endless rush toward the complete and utter self-annihilation that plagues the lives of the young "soldiers" who die every day in our streets.

His grandfather James Bordeaux was one of the early French fur traders who bravely carried on his trade and barter with the Sioux when the virgin prairies of the west were still an open frontier. A lineal descendent of Red Cormorant Woman (Húntkálutawin), his grandmother, he was well versed in his mother tongue. Being proficient in several dialects of the native language, he was able to converse with sage and grizzled old warriors and thus obtain information impossible for a white man to learn. His close union with his own tribe and daily conversations with them is an assurance that no doubtful, or transcribed evidence, will appear on these pages. In Bordeaux’s search for material for a history of his people, he spent considerable time traveling and talking to the oldest Indians on the different Sioux Indian Reservations. As such, they were considered in treaties signed between the tribal nations and the federal government. Larry Nesper focuses on the implementation and long-term effects of the mixed-blood provision of the 1854 treaty with the Chippewa of Wisconsin. That treaty not only ceded lands and created the Ojibwe Indian reservations in the region, it also entitled hundreds of "mixed-bloods belonging to the Chippewas of Lake Superior," as they appear in this treaty, to locate parcels of land in the ceded territories. However, quickly dispossessed of their entitlement, the treaty provision effectively capitalized the first mining companies in Wisconsin, initiating the period of non-renewable resource extraction that changed the demography, ecology, and potential future for the region for both natives and non-natives. With the influx of Euro-Americans onto these lands, conflicts over belonging and difference, as well as community leadership, proliferated on these new reservations well into the twentieth century.
