Book Synopsis Rolling Down Black Stockings by : Esther Royer Ayers
Download or read book Rolling Down Black Stockings written by Esther Royer Ayers and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rolling Down Black Stockings is a personal recollection of Esther Royer Ayers's youth spent in a highly restrictive and confined religious community. Her story is as much a search for identity and a longing for a mother's love as it is a tale about a totalitarian culture that led to her departure from the Old Order Mennonite religion. This poignant story is told in three books: book 1 describes her youth in a farm community on the outskirts of Columbiana, Ohio; book 2 follows the struggles of Ayers as she tries to fit in with another culture after leaving the church when her family moves to Akron, Ohio; and book 3 discusses the history and cultural dynamics of the religion. Ayers recounts how the Old Order Mennonite Church came into existence. Her personal account begins when she was eight years old, watching as her mother took care of her sick father. With intel-ligence and insight, Ayers describes how her family coped with the burden of not having enough income, which meant that the children were expected to work instead of getting an education. her Mennonite community, Ayers relates her difficulties trying to fit in at the public school and how she and her siblings were required to fall classes so that they would be expelled. It concludes with reflections on what all this meant to her. A rare and moving memoir, Rolling Down Black Stockings is also a valuable piece of social history that will appeal to historians as well as those interested in separatist communities and women's studies.
Book Synopsis Tradition and Transition by : Paton Yoder
Download or read book Tradition and Transition written by Paton Yoder and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2000-10-03 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one hundred year story of the Amish church depicts the survival of the believers in the early part of the nineteenth century. Revealing the agony of the Great Schism of 1865 which fractured the Amish church, Yoder reveals the coming maturity of the Old Order Amish and the Amish Mennonites, who merged with the Mennonites early in the twentieth century. This book sheds light on the identity and heritage of faith and lifestyle of today's Amish and many Mennonites, and posits that although they hold in common the basic Christian faith, differences in their patterns of obedience remain.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Old Order and Conservative Mennonite Groups by : Stephen Scott
Download or read book Introduction to Old Order and Conservative Mennonite Groups written by Stephen Scott and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells a story which until now has not been available in such an interesting and comprehensive form. What holds these people together? Why are they growing in number? Where do they live? The Old Order Mennonites are less well known than the Amish, but are similar in many beliefs and practices. Some Old Order Mennonites drive horses and buggies. Others use cars for transportation. Conservative Mennonite groups vary a great deal, but in general espouse strong faith and family life and believe that how they live should distinguish them from the larger society around them. The author details courtship and wedding practices, methods of worship, dress, transportation, and vocation. Never before has there been such an inside account of these people and their lives. The author spent years conferring and interviewing members of the various groups, trying to portray their history and their story in a fair and accurate manner. An enjoyable, educational, inspiring book.

Book Synopsis Old Order Mennonites by : Daniel B. Lee
Download or read book Old Order Mennonites written by Daniel B. Lee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee focuses on the Weaverland Conference of Old Order Mennonites, a group formed in 1893 and now consisting of over 5,000 members. A large concentration of Weaverland Mennonites live in upstate New York near Seneca Falls, and Lee focuses his easily readable sociological study on that community. Individual chapters deal with the worship, rituals, rules, and discipline of the group, and with a number of recent defections to a more mainstream Mennonite Church located in the same area. Lee argues that Weaverland Mennonites are held together by their practices alone, rather than by a common underlying set of beliefs. --Choice Magazine

In the last decade, New York State has had the fastest-growing Amish population. This work highlights the diversity of Amish settlement in New York State and the contribution of New York's Amish to the state’s rich cultural heritage. The second edition of New York Amish updates settlement areas to acknowledge recently established communities and to demonstrate the impact of growth, schism, and migration on existing settlements. In addition, chapters treating external and internal challenges to Amish settlement and the challenges Amish settlement poses to neighboring non-Amish communities have been updated, and a new chapter looks to the future of New York’s Amish. All maps have been updated, and a new map showing all of New York’s Amish communities has been added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a week Darla Weaver bundles her children into the buggy, hitches up her spirited mare, and drives six miles to the farm where she grew up. In Gathering of Sisters, Weaver writes about her horse-and-buggy Mennonite family and the weekly women’s gatherings that keep them connected. On warm days, the children play and fish and build houses of hay in the barn. In the winter, everyone stays close to the woodstove, with puzzles and games and crocheting. No matter the weather, the Tuesday get-togethers of this Old Order Mennonite family keep them grounded and centered in their love for God and for each other. The rest of the week is full of laundry, and errands, and work that never ends. But Tuesdays are about being sisters, daughters, and mothers. Hear straight from Amish and Mennonite people themselves as they write about their daily lives and deeply rooted faith in the Plainspoken series from Herald Press. Each book includes “A Day in the Life of the Author” and the author’s answers to FAQs about the Amish and Mennonites.
