Through graphic descriptions of Alan's behavior, the first chapter hook's the reader who then develops an understanding, and even some affection for Alan. The subsequent chapters center on Jenny, Alan's mother and how her life events have in turn affected Alan. Finally, we are brought to the present, which focuses on Alan and the sociopathic beliefs that he uses to justify his murder of women.
