Book excerpt: Do you remember your first fishing trip? Your first deer hunt? Your first expedition into the wilds of northern Maine's Big Woods country? How about the unique characters you've met, what you learned from them, and the adventures-and especially the misadventures-you experienced with them? Have you dreamed of greater outdoor challenges? My Naked Safari will rekindle those memories and inspire you to create new ones. My Naked Safari is the chronicle of the author's 60-plus-year journey across New England, Eastern Canada, and even South Africa, as an amateur, self-taught sportsman. At times, he was quite ill-equipped and unprepared for his adventures. In others, he shows how much his knowledge has grown. Many of the tales are filled with humor, some with excitement, and a few with sadness. All are true. Each will leave readers relating to similar people, places, and events in their own lives. Enjoy your journey!

Book excerpt: First published in 1998, music scored for film has only relatively recently received the critical attention which it merits. Many composers in the twentieth century have written works for films or documentaries, a number feeling that this aspect of their output has been undervalued. This dictionary complements other studies which have appeared in recent years which look at the technical and theoretical issues concerned with film music composition. Arranged alphabetically by composer, the volume comprises over 500 entries covering all nationalities. Each entry includes very brief biographical information on the composer, followed by a list of the films (with dates) for which he or she has composed. Details of recordings are also given. The dictionary’s international coverage ensures that it will become a standard reference work for all those interested in the history of twentieth-century music and the development of film.

The family, travelling to Africa as a group for the first time, know that adventures and disasters await. It is not what life throws at you but how you deal with it that counts. This is a humorous and warm account of a family's frustration and bewilderment. From being stranded in Lake Victoria with no fuel to being buffeted in a tropical storm near Murchinson Falls, the Bruton family embraced adversity with humour and tenacity. This book is probably the funniest account of travels abroad that you will ever read. With laughter comes drama and adversity, perhaps too, the key to a mystery that has kept Scotland Yard baffled for over forty years...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It was dark when I came to. What woke me was the cold and the water on my legs. I was doing spoons with Scotty, me behind him. We were on a beach. We didn't speak for the first minute, we were so disorientated. I had to genuinely think very hard about where I was. Then I remembered I was in Australia.' It's the late eighties and 24-year-old Kerry has been drifting aimlessly through life in Edinburgh. Rarely having plans of any kind, she gets drunk and things happen: sex, drugs, parties, relationships, and, when she's really pushed, work. Setting off on a hastily arranged visit to Australia, Kerry packs only three items of clothing, a pair of flip-flops, two hundred pounds and her young persons' work visa. Soon broke, hungry and homeless, she joins ART, a likeable but mismatched band of travellers who sell dodgy oil paintings door-to-door in the suburbs. Young, beautiful and free, they drink wildly and live for the moment. Embarking on a riotous road trip together, their lives become deeply entangled, and the drinking spirals out of control. Eventually, Kerry is forced to admit that her journey to Australia isn't quite what it seems ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era before affordable travel, National Geographic not only served as the first glimpse of countless other worlds for its readers, but it helped them confront sweeping historical change. There was a time when its cover, with the unmistakable yellow frame, seemed to be on every coffee table, in every waiting room. In American Iconographic, Stephanie L. Hawkins traces National Geographic’s rise to cultural prominence, from its first publication of nude photographs in 1896 to the 1950s, when the magazine’s trademark visual and textual motifs found their way into cartoon caricature, popular novels, and film trading on the "romance" of the magazine’s distinctive visual fare. National Geographic transformed local color into global culture through its production and circulation of readily identifiable cultural icons. The adventurer-photographer, the exotic woman of color, and the intrepid explorer were part of the magazine’s "institutional aesthetic," a visual and textual repertoire that drew upon popular nineteenth-century literary and cultural traditions. This aesthetic encouraged readers to identify themselves as members not only in an elite society but, paradoxically, as both Americans and global citizens. More than a window on the world, National Geographic presented a window on American cultural attitudes and drew forth a variety of complex responses to social and historical changes brought about by immigration, the Great Depression, and world war. Drawing on the National Geographic Society’s archive of readers’ letters and its founders’ correspondence, Hawkins reveals how the magazine’s participation in the "culture industry" was not so straightforward as scholars have assumed. Letters from the magazine’s earliest readers offer an important intervention in this narrative of passive spectatorship, revealing how readers resisted and revised National Geographic’s authority. Its photographs and articles celebrated American self-reliance and imperialist expansion abroad, but its readers were highly aware of these representational strategies, and alert to inconsistencies between the magazine’s editorial vision and its photographs and text. Hawkins also illustrates how the magazine actually encouraged readers to question Western values and identify with those beyond the nation’s borders. Chapters devoted to the magazine’s practice of photographing its photographers on assignment and to its genre of husband-wife adventurers reveal a more enlightened National Geographic invested in a cosmopolitan vision of a global human family. A fascinating narrative of how a cultural institution can influence and embody public attitudes, this book is the definitive account of an iconic magazine’s unique place in the American imagination.

Book excerpt: Hollywood and Africa - recycling the Dark Continent myth from 19082020 is a study of over a century of stereotypical Hollywood film productions about Africa. It argues that the myth of the Dark Continent continues to influence Western cultural productions about Africa as a cognitive-based system of knowledge, especially in history, literature and film. Hollywood and Africa identifies the colonial mastertext of the Dark Continent mythos by providing a historiographic genealogy and context for the terms development and consolidation. An array of literary and paraliterary film adaptation theories are employed to analyse the deep genetic strands of HollywoodAfrica film adaptations. The mutations of the Dark Continent mythos across time and space are then tracked through the classical, neoclassical and new wave HollywoodAfrica phases in order to illustrate how Hollywood productions about Africa recycle, revise, reframe, reinforce, transpose, interrogate and even critique these tropes of Darkest Africa while sustaining the colonial mastertext and rising cyberactivism against Hollywoods whitewashing of African history.

Book excerpt: A pregnant thirteen-year-old's apocalyptic vision of the late 20th century The Talking Room reflects an apocalyptic vision of the late 20th century, seen through the eyes of a pregnant thirteen-year-old who may not be a test tube baby. The Lesbian relationship between the mother J--wild, lost, beautiful--and competent Aunt V, a businesswoman, reveals itself to the reader as "the talking room" becomes the sounding board for the endless fights, endless reconciliations. V's desperate search for the beloved J through the nights of waterfront bars is lightened by wildly comic excursions reminiscent of our great American humorists. With wit, poetic clarity and compassion, Marianne Hauser explores the paradoxes of our age--need for love yet flight from love, search for self yet self-destruction--a dilemma shared alike by today's heterosexual and homosexual world. The author's multifaceted view defies dogma or simplification as her characters draw us into their turbulent and deeply human drama.
