Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Musical Recollections Some years ago, at a banquet of musicians, at which the wine was excellent and the music (with the exception of that which I contributed myself) execrable, I was called upon to make a speech. Having on several previous occasions intensified the melancholy of an after-dinner company in this fashion, I could not very well plead that I was 'unaccustomed to public speak ing, ' but I sought to be excused on the ground that, as I had enhanced the enjoyment of the assembly by playing one of my own composi tions on the piano, it would be a pity to spoil the good impression thus created by taking also a share in the post-prandial oratory. But the chairman would listen to no such beautiful reason ing, and the next minute found me on my legs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections Were I to live a thousand years - which is hardly likely - I should never forget that fateful day, February 24, 1848, when I was just six years old. Not so much because it coincided with the fall Of the Monarchy of July, as that it marked the first steps of my musical career - a career which, even yet, I am not sure was my real destiny, so great is my love for the exact sciences! At that time I lived with my parents in the Rue de Beaune in an apartment overlooking the great gardens. The day promised to be fine, but it was very cold. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musical Reminiscences and Impressions I had materials of sufficient interest at my disposal. I had not, however, written many pages, before I began to live again in the past. Incidents which i I had almost forgotten came before me as vividly as if they had occurred but yesterday. I saw, in imagination, the faces and figures of musicians, the lives and doings of whom the younger generations read as matters of musical history. For me, whilst penning my recollections, these musicians of the past were just as present as they were years ago when I was holding converse with them, or when I saw them at the festival or concert in which they were taking part. Some of these celebrities still live in their works, and are thus in a manner present amongst us; but the great singers and the world famed executants I have written about are, for the most part, but a name to those who have not had the privilege, as I had, of hearing them. The voice of many a celebrated singer of bygone days still rings in my ears, although now for ever mute. I. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Old Musician This conjuring up of life's past events before the mind's eye is familiar to all thoughtful per sons, but it is a half-dreaming habit and enter tains the dreamer only. I hope that it will not be thought that I have rashly undertaken the task of making my dreamy recollections interesting to other people I think there must be many who would like to know how we of the earlier musical force worked, and what kind of an environment we had fifty years ago. If I succeed in interesting my readers in my recollections, I shall be amply repaid for the labor of jotting them down. Download or read book A Quaker Singer's Recollections (Classic Reprint) written by David Bispham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Quaker Singer's Recollections Singers must acquire a full repertoire of classic songs, oratorios and operas. These things should be learned first, learned rapidly and learned well; they are the stock in trade of the singer, but it is scarcely realized owing to the regrettable but quite frequent debasement of taste of the present time. Singers should learn Italian, French and German for the great music of those schools, and they must learn English for the magnificent music of our own tongue - and for very shame's sake, - for not one singer out of ten today can be understood when singing English, except in musical comedy where, unfortunately, good singing is not a requisite, but where, owing to the lack of other operatic opportunities, the very best avail able talent could be chosen, and should be heard. Book Synopsis Recollections of My Nonexistence by : Rebecca Solnit
Download or read book Recollections of My Nonexistence written by Rebecca Solnit and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electric portrait of the artist as a young woman that asks how a writer finds her voice in a society that prefers women to be silent In Recollections of My Nonexistence, Rebecca Solnit describes her formation as a writer and as a feminist in 1980s San Francisco, in an atmosphere of gender violence on the street and throughout society and the exclusion of women from cultural arenas. She tells of being poor, hopeful, and adrift in the city that became her great teacher; of the small apartment that, when she was nineteen, became the home in which she transformed herself; of how punk rock gave form and voice to her own fury and explosive energy. Solnit recounts how she came to recognize the epidemic of violence against women around her, the street harassment that unsettled her, the trauma that changed her, and the authority figures who routinely disdained and disbelieved girls and women, including her. Looking back, she sees all these as consequences of the voicelessness that was and still is the ordinary condition of women, and how she contended with that while becoming a writer and a public voice for women's rights. She explores the forces that liberated her as a person and as a writer--books themselves, the gay men around her who offered other visions of what gender, family, and joy could be, and her eventual arrival in the spacious landscapes and overlooked conflicts of the American West. These influences taught her how to write in the way she has ever since, and gave her a voice that has resonated with and empowered many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Russian Home: A Musician's Experiences I have been asked by my friend, Mrs. Brodsky, to explain how these Memoirs come to be published. They were originally written for the author's private pleasure, in order that she might recall some of the more striking memories of a life rich in happy experiences; as some of these recollections were connected with eminent men, she contemplated leaving them to be published after her death. Friends, however, to whom portions of the MS. were read, desired to possess the whole, and urged Mrs. Brodsky to make it accessible; she decided to agree, but, even then, a private circulation only was contemplated, to remain entirely in her own control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Art and My Friends This volume is merely a brief record of the most im portant events in my not very eventful life, together with a few recollections and anecdotes of interesting persons, musical and otherwise, that I have met from time to time, many of whom I have called, and can still call, my friends. I am afraid that the little word I is very conspicuous throughout. To tell the truth, when I began to write I tried to avoid its use as much as possible, but I got into such a hopeless muddle that, regardless of the proprieties, I plunged recklessly into the depths of egotism, and thenceforth took as kindly to the personal pronoun as a duck takes to water.
