Book excerpt: ❤️❤️❤️ A Heartwarming Story of Love, Sacrifice, and Hope. Clunk. A small Christmas ornament landed next to her, and she knew what that meant. He was here. Her heart began to beat faster as she looked over to the right. Then she saw the little boy. He was sitting next to her, smiling and pointing at the book she held. “You want me to read more of this story?” After closing the Christmas store for the night, Julia encounters a sad little boy who vanishes right before her eyes. Soon, he visits her on a regular basis and she is looking forward to their nightly play-dates at the store. As their bond strengthens, he becomes like the son she had always dreamed of—except, he already has a family. Somewhere. Julia knows that if she helps him find his family, she'd lose him forever and be alone again. Maybe she can hold on to him just a little longer… There's nothing Tony, a firefighter by trade and part-time chef in his family's Italian restaurant, wants more than to take the sweet and easily flustered manager of the Christmas store out on a date. But she keeps turning him down, no matter how hard he tries. She claims that she has to work long hours after the shop closes. But her eyes always betray her every time he asks her out. He has a nagging feeling that she is hiding something that prevents her from going on a date with him. But what if Tony holds the key to locate the little boy's family? Can Julia find the courage within her to let go of her fears and maybe even open her heart to let true love in? It only takes a Christmas miracle... If you enjoy heartwarming sweet holiday romances with a light and charming touch of the supernatural and a mystery to solve, then you will love Her Christmas Angel. Book excerpt: Growing up a second-generation Italian woman in Canada is not as easy as it looks. In fact, it requires the keeping of secrets, the telling of lies, the casting of curses, and the patience of a saint. Here 20 Italian-Canadian women share their stories -- some comic, some tragic, some nostalgic, all true -- about living a double life with a private/public split personality. Intimate, inspiring, brave, and confessional, these tales reveal women old enough to reminisce yet young enough to revolutionize. Balancing between the Old Country and the new, a respect for tradition and the need to break with it, this collection is a rare and surprising blend of humour and candor that promises the perfect conversation-starter. Mamma mia, what will they dare say next?

Book excerpt: The fifth Commissario Ricciardi historical mystery in the series of “ingenious crime novels, written with intelligence and enthusiasm” (The Wall Street Journal). As Naples prepares for its holiday celebrations, behind the facade of order and happiness imposed by the fascist regime, lurks terrible poverty and blinding desperation. In a luxurious apartment on the Mergellina beach the bodies of a fascist militia officer and his wife have been found. The woman has had her throat cut while the man has been stabbed over sixty times. Seemingly, the hands of two separate killers have been at work. A statuette of San Giuseppe, patron saint of workers, lies in pieces on the floor. At the scene of the crime, Ricciardi, who has the dubious gift of being able to see and hear the last seconds in the lives of those who have suffered a violent death, listens to the enigmatic last words of the couple. Accompanied by his faithful partner Brigadier Raffaele Maione, and once more troubled by two women who compete for his attentions, the Commissario will have to trace a wide and frenetic arc through the streets of Naples in order to uncover the truth. “The refreshing lack of cynicism of de Giovanni’s two lead detectives, Brigadier Raffaele Maione and Commissario Luigi Alfredo Ricciardi, distinguishes the quietly enjoyable fifth Commissario Ricciardi mystery set in 1930s Naples. . . . Engaging characters and melancholy atmosphere.” —Publishers Weekly “One of the most entrancing series of crime novels.” —Shots Magazine “An absolutely terrific series.” —Open Letters Monthly

Book excerpt: A Year Of Landmarks, Success Stories And Lessons For The Future 2019 will be remembered for a long time in Odisha’s political history. Naveen Patnaik returned to power as Chief Minister for the fifth consecutive time, only the sixth person in the country to hold the office for over 20 years. The Lok Sabha elections also threw up some winners who did not come from a political background. The year saw another cyclone, and another marathon effort to keep the loss of lives to the bare minimum. The state continued to reinforce its status as the country’s sports hub even as individuals from diverse fields made a mark at the national and international stage. We bring you snapshots of the major happenings of the year gone by in this edition’s Cover Story. Continuing with its innovative approach to promote tourism in the state, the authorities came up with another unique initiative. The 45-day Marine Drive Eco-Retreat Festival near Konark promises to change the face of tourism in the state. We bring all the interesting details in City Lights. The section also explores how the Odisha Biennale has been growing in popularity over the years. Elsewhere in the edition, we have put together a list of some stunning waterfalls across Odisha that are a must-visit during the winter. The next time you see food being wasted by the group sitting at the next table in a restaurant, you can take hope from a new concept that seems to be gaining popularity across the state. In City Lights, find out more about the practice of using community fridges to prevent food from restaurants and eateries going waste. City Interactive has an interesting article on how a strong reading habit can end up as a success story. The section also has an interesting take on creativity. One of the contributors takes you to an off-beat travel destination in Koraput. There was much anticipation when Odisha was chosen for one of the tiger translocation projects by the National Tiger Conservation Authority a few years ago. Two years down the line, the exercise has become a lesson in how not to implement such a scheme. Read City Beat to find out what went wrong, and how. Our CityZens this time are two Odia chefs who have added spice to Masterchef India, the reality cooking show. We also profile Biswakarma Maharana, a craftsman who infuses life into scraps of wood as he continues a family tradition.

Wines and Liqueurs gives recipes for homemade, refreshing libations, including the Italian favorite, Limoncello. The homestyle recipes are nothing short of fantastic; but what makes this book even more special is that Wanda and Giovanna welcome you not only into their kitchen but also into their lives at Gangivecchio. In stories rich with the fragrant atmosphere of the gorgeous Sicilian countryside, they share memories of the annual grape harvest, a special Christmas snowstorm, and an illicit childhood trip on a commercial fishing boat. They describe favorite local restaurants and dishes from the past and the present. And they tell funny and touching stories of relatives, friends, and pets; both old and new. Book excerpt: Sunday dinners, basement kitchens, and backyard gardens are everyday cultural entities long associated with Italian Americans, yet the general perception of them remains superficial and stereotypical at best. For many people, these scenarios trigger ingrained assumptions about individuals' beliefs, politics, aesthetics, values, and behaviors that leave little room for nuance and elaboration. This collection of essays explores local knowledge and aesthetic practices, often marked as "folklore," as sources for creativity and meaning in Italian-American lives. As the contributors demonstrate, folklore provides contemporary scholars with occasions for observing and interpreting behaviors and objects as part of lived experiences. Its study provides new ways of understanding how individuals and groups reproduce and contest identities and ideologies through expressive means. Italian Folk offers an opportunity to reexamine and rethink what we know about Italian Americans. The contributors to this unique book discuss historic and contemporary cultural expressions and religious practices from various parts of the United States and Canada to examine how they operate at local, national, and transnational levels. The essays attest to people's ability and willingness to create and reproduce certain cultural modes that connect them to social entities such as the family, the neighborhood, and the amorphous and fleeting communities that emerge in large-scale festivals and now on the Internet. Italian Americans abandon, reproduce, and/or revive various cultural elements in relationship to ever-shifting political, economic, and social conditions. The results are dynamic, hybrid cultural forms such as valtaro accordion music, Sicilian oral poetry, a Columbus Day parade, and witchcraft (stregheria). By taking a closer look and an ethnographic approach to expressive behavior, we see that Italian-American identity is far from being a linear path of assimilation from Italian immigrant to American of Italian descent but is instead fraught with conflict, negotiation, and creative solutions. Together, these essays illustrate how folklore is evoked in the continual process of identity revaluation and reformation.
