Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Land of the Rising Sun comes the delightful and affectionate toy dog known as the Japanese Chin, revered for centuries as a palace treasure and today counted among the world’s most beloved companion dogs. This Comprehensive Owner’s Guide, written by Juliette Cunliffe, provides an entertaining portrait of the Chin’s origins and history, including Commodore Perry’s famous door-opening visit to Japan, the breed’s rise to the favor of England’s Queen Alexandra, and the Chin’s introduction to the United States. In the chapter on the breed’s characteristics, the author reveals her insight into this "happy little character with a down-to-earth, yet bumptious, personality." Potential owners are made aware that, despite his small size, the Chin has a larger-than-life approach to the world, and that as a home companion, the Chin demands affection and little else, being a naturally clean pet, often compared to a cat in cleanliness, sophistication, and self-awareness. In the home of a loving owner, the Chin will thrive and become a superb addition to the family, even one with children and cat or two! New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author’s advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconventional and provocative, My Life with Things is Elizabeth Chin's meditation on her relationship with consumer goods and a critical statement on the politics and method of anthropology. Chin centers the book on diary entries that focus on everyday items—kitchen cabinet knobs, shoes, a piano—and uses them to intimately examine the ways consumption resonates with personal and social meaning: from writing love haikus about her favorite nail polish and discussing the racial implications of her tooth cap, to revealing how she used shopping to cope with a miscarriage and contemplating how her young daughter came to think that she needed Lunesta. Throughout, Chin keeps Karl Marx and his family's relationship to their possessions in mind, drawing parallels between Marx's napkins, the production of late nineteenth-century table linens, and Chin's own vintage linen collection. Unflinchingly and refreshingly honest, Chin unlocks the complexities of her attachments to, reliance on, and complicated relationships with her things. In so doing, she prompts readers to reconsider their own consumption, as well as their assumptions about the possibilities for creative scholarship.

Book excerpt: For anyone who has ever loved an incorrigible pet or known what it was like to lose a loved one, My Life with George is the hilarious and moving account of the impossible but adorable George. When Judith Summers first met George, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who would change her life, she and her young son, Joshua, were mourning the deaths of her husband and her father, who had died barely two weeks apart. It was love at first sight. George was the ultimate upper-class pooch, and seemingly the perfect puppy, brimming with love and joy and complete with "the kind of film-star looks that made strangers stop in the street and coo over him." But, as Judith soon discovered, George was as time-consuming as a full-time job and as expensive to run as a Ferrari. Willful, possessive and badly behaved, he refused to eat anything other than organic roast chicken, destroyed her work, and suffered from every allergy and illness under the sun. On top of that, George was horribly accident-prone. Stuff happened to him. His vet bills alone have run to $25,000, and George is still only nine years old! It wasn't long before King George ruled the roost in Judith's home. But even after he drove away one of her suitors, she couldn't fathom giving him up. Just as his naughtiness was boundless, so was his devotion to her and her son. A foot-warmer on cold nights, a good listener, and a fierce (okay, not so fierce) protector, George was always by their side -- and much of the time underfoot. For anyone who has ever loved an incorrigible pet or known what it was like to lose a loved one, My Life with George is the hilarious and moving account of the impossible but adorable George, and of the wonderful way in which he helped to fill a huge void in the lives of both Judith and her son while driving them absolutely barking mad along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japan I was Mariko, in Germany I was Marie, and now I am Marina. A child of three lands, proud of each, unable to say where each began and ended within me. I decided to write a book so my family could know the life I have been so fortunate to live. This is my story, previously unknown to them. “Mariko” was born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1932. Her name meant “of the sea” after her father who was a seaman. He was from Germany, and this was during pre-World War II tensions. Her mother was from Japan. When her parents married, her mother automatically became a German citizen, as did Mariko. Wartime arrived in 1942 when the United States sought revenge against Japan for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mariko and her family narrowly avoided the firebombing and subsequent attacks. In late 1946, an order made by U.S. forces, declared that German nationals including those by marriage and birth must leave Japan in a forced repatriation to their home country. “Marie” was born when her family moved to Hamburg, Germany. It had experienced even worse wartime bombing. The family struggled to rebuild their life, but eventually they had a home for their family. When life was finally stable, Marie was able to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer. She later met a U.S. soldier, married and moved to San Francisco. “Marina” led an adventuresome life in America, eventually opening two Japanese restaurants. It was coming full circle, uniting her heritage and her experiences in a tangible way. Marina’s life was not always easy, but it was full of love and exploration. It is this history she wanted to document for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, so they would understand how she was a child of three lands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kawai Koume (1804–1889) was an accomplished poet and painter and a wife, mother, and grandmother in a lower-ranking samurai family in the provincial castle town of Wakayama. She was an eyewitness to many of the key events leading up to the Meiji Restoration and the radical changes that followed, including the famine of 1837, the great earthquake of 1854, the cholera epidemic of 1859, and the departure of samurai to fight in the civil wars of the 1860s. For more than fifty years, she kept a diary recording her family’s daily life—meals and expenses, visitors and the weather, small-town gossip and news of momentous events. Through Koume’s eyes and words, Simon Partner opens a window on social, economic, and cultural life amid some of the most dramatic periods of Japan’s transformative nineteenth century. Koume’s World vividly portrays the everyday activities, social interactions, information networks, cultural production, and household economy of a samurai family across the Tokugawa-Meiji divide. Partner’s narrative offers a remarkably detailed portrait of the dynamic working life of a female artist and household manager while also giving a regional perspective on the upheavals surrounding the Meiji Restoration. A compelling microhistorical study of gender, economy, and society in nineteenth-century Japan, Koume’s World is a compelling account of how one woman experienced both mundane routines and drastic social transformations.

The authors erudition in Sanskrit, English, and French has been used to illuminate his varied experiences first as student, then teacher, later as career diplomat, and after retirement, founder of a unique school in Mysore, India. The school emphasizes Sanskrit teaching; its students participate in a unique experiment called Dharmamananam (described in the book), introducing them to Vedantic values of ancient Indian culture. Glimpses of other countries, leaders, benefactors, and common folk are vividly brought to light, prompting the readers intellectual and moral involvement. His meetings with Dr. S. Radhakrishnan (scholar and former president of India), Jawaharlal Nehru (first prime minister of India, who chose him as a diplomatic recruit in the new Indian Republic), and many events and encounters with fascinating people from varied cultures have many interesting insights. The authors unique Brahmanic perspective of Indias foreign policy, Shakespeare, the Indian epic Ramayana, and the need to revamp society and education using the Gurukula model of ancient India and the Kibutzims of Israel makes for compelling reading. His personal involvement with and the account of the Portuguese enclaves and Goa becoming integral with the nascent Indian republic, describes the pulls and pressures of history and political reality with his own clarity of vision and immediacy. There are many such sketches meriting study and reflection.
