Book excerpt: Winner of the Newbery Medal, Coretta Scott King Author Award, and Kirkus Prize for Young Readers’ Literature! Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Gene Luen Yang, New Kid is a timely, honest graphic novel about starting over at a new school where diversity is low and the struggle to fit in is real, from award-winning author-illustrator Jerry Craft. Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds—and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself? This middle grade graphic novel is an excellent choice for tween readers, including for summer reading. New Kid is a selection of the Schomburg Center's Black Liberation Reading List. Plus don't miss Jerry Craft's Class Act!

Book excerpt: Delilah was about to lose everything: her life, her home, her marriage, and her future. She was desperate and without direction because she was going through one more marriage failure and would become a single mother again with two sons. She was broken and abandoned, with no family to help her in the United States. She struggled, unable to understand why this was happening if she had done everything right in her third marriage. She tried to fix her marriage, but she could not. She thought that everything was lost. Depression and suicide were surrounding her until she heard the voice of God. In this book, Delilah shares how God restored her life. She shares her life story openly without shame but with courage. This book details the process that God took her through, and she narrates her conversation with God, which happened through visions, dreams, and the revelation of each one. She shares how a person can be living in the present without being aware of what could be destroying their life. She expresses the need to change, even though you may think you are right. She feels privileged that God has chosen her to be a bilingual author; she writes in Spanish and English. Both books have been written simultaneously in two languages. She gives God all the glory. She includes a study guide in this book, and you can access more material on her webpage www.delilahpc.com

Download or read book Common Threads written by Adele Flood and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common Threads explores ideas of artistic identity and memory contained within the narrated stories of ten textile artists. It reveals how individuals bring a sense of linearity to fragments of memory and create a cohesive sense of self through telling their life’s story. By employing a systems model, the author constructs new ideas of interrogating identity and art practice. The model, “Constructing Personal Narratives”, brings into focus the hermeneutic circle of learning, and identifies the importance and need to provide opportunities for lifelong learning. The stories told by the participants who returned to the formal education sector later in life reveal the profound effects adult learning had upon their lives. The writer reveals how the model generated the interview questions that provided the rich biographical content that emerged within dialogues. The common threads of experience and feelings of the ten participants and the author are revealed, and from these emerge deepened understandings of both the place of stories within our lives and how stories can further an understanding of what it means to be an artist. Emerging from these stories are implications for teaching practice; these are presented as observations and questions in terms of how educators should be part of the learning experience with those they educate.
