Book excerpt: In the nonfiction story My Journey with Infiltrating Ductile Carcinoma (Breast Cancer), author W. Andranette Anderson uses passion and emotions in order to let her audience know how the challenges of breast cancer affect her and her family. Her challenges are compounded when her mother and stepdad are also diagnosed with serious illnesses. She is now the primary caregiver not only for her parents but also for herself. The story takes place over a period of two and a half years. During this time, Andranette does her best to live her life as normally as possible, do whatever is needed for her parents, and use her daily activities as a much needed respite in order to ensure her own self preservation. Though she had to stop working as an educator to take care of her parents and herself, she would not trade anything for the lessons that she learned from this awe-inspiring experience.

Although more and more men and women are surviving breast cancer, it is still a very frightening diagnosis, and your life is absolutely turned upside down when you are told you have breast cancer. This is a book of hope and inspiration. I wrote it for both men and women, and I believe that thousands of women and men will be helped by all the information in this book. As you will see, throughout the book, each inspirational chapter, which is a documentation of my specific journey with breast cancer, is followed by a factual account that contains up-to-date information regarding breast cancer and treatment in both men and women. In addition to it's inspirational chapters, I hope that the factual information in his book will help both men and women make informed decisions regarding their treatment options and help them understand that there is quality of life after being diagnosed with breast cancer. In this book you will read that almost from the beginning I decided that I would embrace my diagnosis and not be intimated by it. As you will read, I would take this diagnosis head-on; I wanted to feel empowered and not helpless! I want both men and women who read this book to understand that although it’s not easy, you have to maintain a positive attitude about your diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis and fight it every day. You can never give up. Lastly, although our lives will never be the same, as you will read in this book, there are tons of breast cancer survivors out there. So my advice is to live your life to the fullest and become an inspiration to other breast cancer survivors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unplanned Journey relates the adventures of my walk on the Cancer road. It stresses the lessons that Cancer taught me. It tells the reader about my fears and my struggles in dealing with Cancer - the acceptance of having the disease, the surgeries, and its treatments. This book is written in an effort to assure any woman or man with Cancer that there is an end to the long journey. My readers should be assured that they are not alone. Today most Cancers are curable if they can be found early. Happiness and normal life will return again at the end of the journey. Book Review: Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned By Beverly Stacy Dittmer Reviewed by Mary Ann Noonan Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned, is the very personal journal of Beverly Stacy Dittmer's passage from finding a lump in her breast, through her anxious wait for the confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer that every woman dreads to hear, through her one step at a time trek from surgery through treatment and complications, and, finally, to a realization that life goes on and can become normal again. Beverly as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, and a professional woman shares critical, yet sensitive, information about her diagnosis of breast cancer and its treatment. She makes it quite clear in the copyright page that "the medical statements in this book are only what I understood and are not to be taken as true medical facts," continuing that her knowledge about breast cancer was obtained in years 2003 and 2004. In addition, she includes a personal touch to her 222 page manuscript describing many relationships and human interest stories about life with her husband, her family, her friends, her personal activities, and travels. The reader follows Beverly as she relates her cancer journey one step at a time-the good times and the bad. In a detailed, remarkably sensitive, casual, almost speaking to the audience style, Dittmer writes about everyday life while facing a life threatening condition. She shares words of advice and reminders about living each day with confidence and courage that there is light at the end of the tunnel while including "lessons learned" in the last four pages. Encouragement is granted to the reader by the author's constructive council that "there is an end to this long journey." Through her direct and candid accounts it was obvious that she was not alone in this walk. As a professional nurse practitioner and retired professor of nursing, reading Beverly Stacy Dittmer's personal story reinforces the importance for health care providers to listen and to be present to all individuals for whom they care. For the person with a life-threatening illness, this read will provide a source of strength and encouragement. For the student of nursing and medicine it is a must read.

Book excerpt: On March 14, 2012, Kim Rideout heard the words that one in every nine women will hear in her lifetime: she had breast cancer. Taken To My Knees is a candid memoir written from the daily journals she kept as she underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments to deal with the IDC Stage IIB breast cancer she had been diagnosed with. Rideout recounts how scared she was in those early days with a brutal honesty. She takes her audience along with her as she makes daily attempts to reconcile her "new normal" with the gut-wrenching fear that a cancer diagnosis brings. In sharing her story, Rideout demonstrates how important it is to be surrounded with love, family, and friendship and how a positive attitude can be just as important in the healing process as any medication. This poignant book will provide a firsthand insight to family, friends, and caregivers of any breast cancer patient as well as give hope and strength to fellow warrior survivors.

I felt from the beginning of diagnosis that my cancer was meant for a much larger purpose than my own. I felt God leading me through journaling to this end. I had so very many questions, wondering if what I was feeling was normal. I had to think many other women might have the same. This book contains my thoughts, journaling, reflections, and prayers throughout my journey. These are meant for reflection and how they might fit into your story or complement it. The title, A Thin Pink Ribbon, is a line from a poem I wrote about the connection between my mother and I through breast cancer. I hope this helps you in some small way as you travel your own path unique to you.

Within three weeks of being diagnosed she had a mastectomy and was on the road to recovery. But after the surgery she had a lot of questions, the same that most women will have. As an Occupational Therapist, she knew some of the answers from her own clinical training and experience. But many more came from speaking with other women who had undergone mastectomies, from researching message boards, and a little bit of luck. Now she and her co-authors have brought together the answers to the questions that women face in chapters that cover everything from how to prepare for going to the hospital to when you come home" -- publisher's web site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After her diagnosis of hormone-negative breast cancer, health journalist Patricia Prijatel did what any reporter would do: start investigating the disease, how it occurs, how it's treated, and how to keep it from recurring. While she learned that important research on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) was emerging, she found a noticeable lack of resources on the disease, which differs from hormone-positive breast cancer in important ways, including prognosis and treatment options. Triple-negative breast cancer disproportionately affects younger women and African-American women-and some forms of it can be more dangerous than other types of breast cancer. But there are many reasons to be hopeful, as Prijatel shows in this book. Surviving Triple-Negative Breast Cancer delivers research-based information on the biology of TNBC; the role of genetics, family history, and race; how to navigate treatment options; understanding a pathology report; and a plethora of strategies to reduce the risk of recurrence, including diet and lifestyle changes. In clear, approachable language, Prijatel provides a fact-filled guide based on a vast array of scientific studies. Woven throughout the book are stories of women who have faced TNBC. These are mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters who went through a variety of medical treatments and then got on with life--one competes in triathlons, two had babies after being treated with chemo, one got remarried in her 50s, and one just celebrated the 30th birthday of the son she was nursing when she was diagnosed. Writing with honesty and humor, Prijatel delivers an inspiring message--that TNBC is a disease to take seriously, with proper and occasionally aggressive treatment, but it is not automatically a killer. Most women diagnosed with the disease survive and go on to live full lives. Surviving Triple-Negative Breast Cancer is a roadmap for women who want to be empowered through their treatment and recovery.

Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in adjuvant therapies of cancer, the regi mens of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy treatment which are presently available fail to cure the majority of cancer patients. Pre operative (neoadjuvant) chemotherapy represents a new approach in drug scheduling, based on sound theoretical, pharmacokinetic, and experimental principles. The preoperative timing of chemotherapy before definitive sur gery is not a minor change in the therapy of cancer. To be successful, large numbers of practitioners and their patients must participate. Substantial alterations of many aspects of the present management of cancer will have to follow. Therefore, before such therapy can be fully and routinely implemented, results of the novel treatment and its rationale have to be carefully evaluated. In preoperative treatment, other features will likely gain impor tance. For the first time, clinicians have a chance to follow the in vivo response of the tumor exposed to preoperative chemotherapy. The subsequent histological assessment of the tumor sample may likely become an important prognostic guide, permitting more re fined individual approaches to the planning of postoperative adju vant treatment. The value of such a treatment strategy can already be appreciated in the clinical setting, as seen from the therapy of osteosarcoma. Furthermore, preoperative chemotherapy might render previously inoperable tumors operable and hence resectable with a curative intention. The preoperative reduction of tumor bulk may also effectively decrease the need for more radical operations, permitting a more uniform adoption of conservative surgery.

Book excerpt: In Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer, the National Cancer Policy Board of the Institute of Medicine examines the psychosocial consequences of the cancer experience. The book focuses specifically on breast cancer in women because this group has the largest survivor population (over 2 million) and this disease is the most extensively studied cancer from the standpoint of psychosocial effects. The book characterizes the psychosocial consequences of a diagnosis of breast cancer, describes psychosocial services and how they are delivered, and evaluates their effectiveness. It assesses the status of professional education and training and applied clinical and health services research and proposes policies to improve the quality of care and quality of life for women with breast cancer and their families. Because cancer of the breast is likely a good model for cancer at other sites, recommendations for this cancer should be applicable to the psychosocial care provided generally to individuals with cancer. For breast cancer, and indeed probably for any cancer, the report finds that psychosocial services can provide significant benefits in quality of life and success in coping with serious and life-threatening disease for patients and their families.
