Book excerpt: My Son, My Father, My Hero is based on the journal that was kept by Larry A. Woodruffs parents from the beginning of his illness. During the first week of dealing with this horrible nightmare, they met another mother whose son had cancer. She gave them some tips on how to get the best care and choices for their son. She told them to keep a daily journal of his medicines and treatments and record how he reacted to them. When the doctors order a medical test, she told them to ask what they hoped to learn and what they would do differently after obtaining the results. And she told them to never forget that this was a teaching hospital and that the medical staff would do tests to learn different things concerning the illness. This book was written to help other parents and families with loved ones who have had not only cancer but also other diseases that put a family in dreadful distress. The disease affects not only the patient but also everyone who is in direct contact with him or her. In their case, cancer affected Larrys parents, brothers, wife, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. This is their story.

Book Synopsis Cancer Kickin' Warrior by : Inez Whitehead-Dickens
Download or read book Cancer Kickin' Warrior written by Inez Whitehead-Dickens and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2001, I was frozen in time. At that time, the only thing I knew about any cancer, is that if you have it, you die. I agonized over things like, am I going to dwindle away and die a painful death? How do I tell my kids? Do I have enough time to get things in order? Who will take care of my husband? My mind went on and on. I looked for someone to talk to who had been diagnosed with my stage of cancer. When I couldn't find any, I thought the worst. I was told that once people go through their ordeal with cancer, they don't want to talk about it. I got on my knees and promised God that if he got me through this, I would become that voice. Well he kept his end of the bargain, and I'm keeping mine. But the stories in this book are not just about me; they are about people who have fought and won their battles with every type and stage of cancer. In talking to them, I learned so much. The trauma one goes through from the beginning of the diagnosis to the end of the treatments makes it understandable that people want to forget it once it's over. But the people in this book wanted to share their stories to let anyone going through this to know it is not a death sentence, and more important-there is life after cancer! Belief in God, positive thinking, and a strong support system will see you through any trial. The stories in this book are also about the people who stand with us and fight for us in the battle against cancer. Without them, we wouldn't survive. So when you read these stories, look at not only the type of cancer they survived, but also the faith, love, and support they had. In some cases you will see how cancer changed their life for the better. So look at their lives post-cancer. Look at their strong, loving support system. When you feel depressed or feel like giving up, pick up this book and read one of the many inspirational stories. You'll learn not to be afraid of cancer; only be afraid if you don't do something about it. Then I guarantee, you too can become not just a survivor, but a Cancer Kickin' Warrior!
Book Synopsis Notes from the Valley by : Andy Mcquitty
Download or read book Notes from the Valley written by Andy Mcquitty and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 2:58 PM on July 14, 2009, Andy McQuitty entered the valley of the shadow of death. “Andy,” his doctor said, “you have a massive tumor that has broken through the wall of your colon. It’s cancer. It’s serious. Get in here now.” Hearing you have cancer does more than warn you of death. It displaces you emotionally and spiritually, as it did for Andy and the roughly 1.7 million cancer patients diagnosed in America annually. Notes from the Valley gives you a window into their experience. In the persona of a travel writer sending notes back from the desert, Andy recounts his journey through stage IV cancer, in which he discovered what King David did in his own valley: that in suffering, God’s presence isn’t diminished, but magnified. Written with humor and sensitivity, Notes from the Valley is for anyone on this journey or traveling alongside a loved one who is. It provides words of wisdom, comfort as it addresses questions like: "Why did I get cancer?" "Does God still love me?" "Can I tell Him how I really feel?" "Is it possible to suffer well?" "Can any good come of this?"
Book Synopsis Living with the Ribbon by : MacKenzie Greenberg
Download or read book Living with the Ribbon written by MacKenzie Greenberg and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MacKenzies life would be classified as ideal by most teenage standards. A set of supportive parents who were still lovingly married, a best friend who was also her identical twin, a mentally tough athlete (who had more muscles than most of her guy friends), and a competitive GPA that was sure to get her into a great college. Everything was right on track for a perfect life, until the age of sixteen, when she was shockingly diagnosed with cancer during a routine physical. Living with the Ribbon is an authentic recount of how MacKenzie Greenberg dealt with the diagnosis (what denial?), suffered through anxiety at each medical appointment (all one hundred-plus of them), responded with Fine when asked that annoying How are you doing/feeling? question, stubbornly refused to listen to the advice of her support system to take it easy, and ultimately, how she continues to battle daily with a disease that will not play by the rules.
Download or read book The Veil written by Cathy Kenny and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-02-23 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother was born with an extra piece of skin on her face. The doctor removed the extra piece of skin with a pair of scissors and placed the skin in a jar. He told my grandmother that he had seen this before and called the extra piece of skin “a veil.” He then told my grandmother, Mom-mom, to sell this bottle with the extra piece of skin inside to a captain of a ship because the ship would not sink and she would be rewarded (in 1930) with money. Mom-mom did not sell the bottle with the extra piece of skin; instead, she saved it for my mother and gave it to her when she was older. I really believe that many people do not know the true significance of the veil, yet I believe in it and its importance. It is a mystery. This was an indication of the life my mom would live, as well as her true faith, which she demonstrated on a daily basis. She was, and always will be, one of a kind. I am honored to be named after her and be her first daughter. She is my hero, and I am glad that I wrote this book in memory of her.
