Book excerpt: Now in paperback: The New York Times bestselling memoir hailed as “unforgettable” (Publishers Weekly) and “a stunning memoir of cultural trauma and personal identity” (Booklist). At age 38, Jennifer Teege happened to pluck a library book from the shelf—and discovered a horrifying fact: Her grandfather was Amon Goeth, the vicious Nazi commandant depicted in Schindler’s List. Reviled as the “butcher of Plaszów,” Goeth was executed in 1946. The more Teege learned about him, the more certain she became: If her grandfather had met her—a black woman—he would have killed her. Teege’s discovery sends her into a severe depression—and fills her with questions: Why did her birth mother withhold this chilling secret? How could her grandmother have loved a mass murderer? Can evil be inherited? Teege’s story is cowritten by Nikola Sellmair, who also adds historical context and insight from Teege’s family and friends, in an interwoven narrative. Ultimately, Teege’s search for the truth leads her, step by step, to the possibility of her own liberation.

Book excerpt: A singular man in the history of modern art, betrayed by Vichy, is the subject of this riveting family memoir On September 20, 1940, one of the most famous European art dealers disembarked in New York, one of hundreds of Jewish refugees fleeing Vichy France. Leaving behind his beloved Paris gallery, Paul Rosenberg had managed to save his family, but his paintings—modern masterpieces by Cézanne, Monet, Sisley, and others—were not so fortunate. As he fled, dozens of works were seized by Nazi forces and the art dealer's own legacy was eradicated. More than half a century later, Anne Sinclair uncovered a box filled with letters. "Curious in spite of myself," she writes, "I plunged into these archives, in search of the story of my family. To find out who my mother's father really was . . . a man hailed as a pioneer in the world of modern art, who then became a pariah in his own country during the Second World War. I was overcome with a desire to fit together the pieces of this French story of art and war." Drawing on her grandfather's intimate correspondence with Picasso, Matisse, Braque, and others, Sinclair takes us on a personal journey through the life of a legendary member of the Parisian art scene in My Grandfather's Gallery. Rosenberg's story is emblematic of millions of Jews, rich and poor, whose lives were indelibly altered by World War II. Sinclair's journey to reclaim her family history paints a picture of modern art on both sides of the Atlantic between the 1920s and 1950s that reframes twentieth-century art history.

Book excerpt: In My Grandfather's Blessings, Rachel Naomi Remen, a cancer physician and master storyteller, uses her luminous stories to remind us of the power of our kindness and the joy of being alive. Dr. Remen's grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the Kabbalah, saw life as a web of connection and knew that everyone belonged to him, and that he belonged to everyone. He taught her that blessing one another is what fills our emptiness, heals our loneliness, and connects us more deeply to life. Life has given us many more blessings than we have allowed ourselves to receive. My Grandfather's Blessings is about how we can recognize and receive our blessings and bless the life in others. Serving others heals us. Through our service we will discover our own wholeness—and the way to restore hidden wholeness in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story I was told when I was fourteen or fifteen years old and it is based on a true story about a cave at the top of a mountain along the Red River. Three men went into a cave that overlooked Red River around 1923 or 1927. You could see the river from the cave, but you couldn't see the cave from the river. As they were searching through the cave they found a pit with a log lying across it about two feet across with a hair rope tied around it descending down, down into the pit. They said it looked like horsehair. They lowered one of the men into the pit to approximately thirty or forty feet where he landed on a rock ledge. He walked around the ledge shining his carbide light and noticed the pit descended another 100 feet or so. Circumferencing the ledge area he noticed another opening. He yelled out to the two men at the top of the pit to let them know he found another cave entrance. As he shined his light into the opening of the cave, he became excited; he saw Spanish helmets, breastplates, muskets, bows, and arrows. There were also spears, trunks with clothing, gold, and silver. His heart began to race as he stood at the edge of the entrance. He looked down and noticed a mask mostly covered with dirt on the cave floor in the opening. He bent over, picked it up and brushed the dust off the mask. When he did, the mask began to glow and voices filled the air around him. The voices were deafening and the mask glowed as if it were on fire. He threw the mask down to the cave floor and started screaming pull me up, please get me out of here, pull me up. They said when his feet hit the cave floor he ran out of the cave never stopping until he had gotten back to the car. He had covered five miles to get back to the car, crossing over mountains and dry creek beds. They couldn't catch him. An hour later when they got back to the car, he was lying on the back floorboard covered with a blanket. When they finally coaxed him out of the car, he told them everything that he experienced. He said: "I'll never go into that cave again as long as I live!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Grandfather’s Mill – Journey to Freedom is a true story — part history, part biography. It focuses on two families and their two infant children, Andrew and Chrystyna, born in Western Ukraine at the height of the Second World War. Their parents fought for Ukrainian independence throughout the years of Polish occupation, the invasion of Stalin’s Bolshevik forces and during the years of Hitler’s Nazi terror. Members of both their families were murdered by one or another of the occupying armies. Family accounts of concentration camps, refugee camps; of war crimes, brutality and uncertainty, of hope, courage and unexpected generosity are interwoven with the historical realities of the time. They were among the lucky ones who found freedom in North America. Half a century after they left their homeland, Andrew and Chrystyna returned. They discovered the villages of their birth, found family members they didn’t know existed, experienced their culture fi rst-hand and fi nally began to make sense of their place in history. This book is written for future generations, for all those who have lived in two very different worlds, for victims of wars, present day refugees, immigrants and especially for those who were born and have always lived in a free country and never experienced the horrors of war.

God has shown me how He has been guiding me all along, leading me to have a deeper faith in Him in all that I do and encounter. God’s Word and love has given me the hope and encouragement I have needed. I know that He is always with me especially when I may not realize it at the time. The stories in this book display the steppingstones I have crossed and how God has led me through good, bad, sad and even funny times. He leads me to the next steppingstone I must cross. My Grandfather Reverend Elmer West gave me the gift of Psalm 1 in 1999. Since then I have learned how much grander God’s plans are verses my own... I will not wither. I hope my book will give you inspiration, deepen your faith, and maybe even give you a laugh or two as you let God guide you through your own journey of steppingstones.

With his usual unerring eye and elegant prose, Charles Ritchie brings them all to life again, with affection and wit.

Book excerpt: August 29, 1924, somewhere after ten in the evening was the last time that Alexander C. Totten was last seen alive. Until one night when I was eight, when I woke to him sitting at the end of my bed. Growing up listening to what the adults would talk about and gathering what paper trail was left behind made me question. For a man who was found dead hours after seeing his wife. Who ran off on him and the kids two and a half months before. Trying to get her to come back to be a family again. Why wouldn't I question if he indeed killed himself, or was he helped with his choice? There was a reason four generations kept that question alive instead of letting it be buried alongside him. There was a bigger reason my great grandmother, when throwing that hand full of dirt on his coffin, felt like there was something off. Follow me, Gerald J. Stalter on my journey as I take my ghostly experiences with my 2x great grandfather's ghost. Helping me understand the clues left behind to finally put his story together. He chose to lead me to the truth. Why not share it? It's true what they say! It comes back to haunt you.

On the Punta Prieta coastline, along the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez, there is a centuries-old legend of a Spanish nobleman whose ship ran aground. In a mutiny by the impoverished crew, he and his prized possession, a beautiful, fiery Azulejo horse, are brutally murdered. Yet before the nobleman draws his last breath, a curse sounds forth from his dying lips that will echo throughout the generations... As a young man, Donato Perry comes to live with his great-great-grandfather, Don Tomas, on his desert ranch in Baja, Mexico. It is there that he learns to become a seasoned vaquero and seeks to capture a wild azulejo horse, the only horse, it is said, of its kind. But when Donato becomes heir to a precious treasure, he finds himself caught in the curse that must finally be played out and a love that must be won. When author Victoria Auberon was four, her father, a British explorer, took her to live in Baja, California. Many of the characters in My Grandfather’s Horses are based upon real animals she knew in her childhood. From age thirteen to fifteen, Victoria spent three years handling horses on the uninhabited island of Cerralvo, in the Sea of Cortez. As an adult, Victoria has managed horse farms in several states as well as having owned, bred, and trained her own Arabian Horses in the USA.

He can ask him anything, and is eager to learn all that Fred has to offer. One special year Chris learns about the true meaning of God's love while helping work in the garden. Throughout this special year, Chris pieces together clues left to him by his grandfather as to the location of a secret key, which reveals the ten lessons for living.
