Book excerpt: “Only sixty candidates were to be selected from more than fifty thousand boys who had written the qualifying examination. One hundred and twenty candidates who got the highest marks in the examination would be called for interview in Bombay out of which sixty unfortunate boys would have to return home. Two seats were booked for boys from Ceylon – Sri Lanka. Our state of Travancore-Cochin of those days, later named Kerala, had a quota of six cadets.” In 1957, author Augustine Varghese was one of those boys chosen for a career in the Indian Merchant Marine. His life from the time of getting selected on the merchant training ship Dufferin covers his life through the ranks from apprenticeship as officer cadet, to getting Certificates of Competency, passing the final Master (Foreign-Going) Certificate, working on merchant ships as junior officer, senior officer, and finally as master (captain). The ship Dufferin was named in honour of Lord Dufferin, who had been a highly respected viceroy of the British Government to India. After being chosen from those fifty thousand applicants so many years ago, the author says, “It was almost miraculous that I stepped on that ship.” Here then is his exciting story of his life spent at sea.

Book excerpt: In the fall of 2006, while deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I began a letter-writing campaign with fifth-grade students from Eyestone Elementary in Wellington, CO. From their letters of support and appreciation, I would find inspiration through the voices of America's youth. Although I was deployed for four-and-a-half months, the students and I shared letters for nine months. The campaign concludes with a visit to Eyestone to meet the students face-to-face. It was a rewarding and unforgettable experience.

Book excerpt: Only Vivian knows the truth. Vivian is the new wife of respected Captain Randolph Carlyle, but when Randolph dies at sea, only she lives with the truth. No one else knows that his last words to her were an angry indictment of her secret past life-not his brother, not his servants, and certainly not his best friend, Conner Jackson. So when Vivian calmly accepts the news that her husband's will had not been updated to include her, those who care about her are puzzled by her reaction. Vivian is convinced she has received God's forgiveness for her past behavior, but as she and Conner are drawn to each other, she fears that, like her late husband, Conner will reject her if he ever learns of her past. Will her secret remain safe, or will its existence threaten the love she seeks?
