Book Synopsis The Greatest Works of Selma Lagerlöf by : Selma Lagerlöf
Download or read book The Greatest Works of Selma Lagerlöf written by Selma Lagerlöf and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 2234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: e-artnow presents this meticulously edited and formatted Selma Lagerlöf collection._x000D_ Selma Lagerlöf was a Swedish author and teacher. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Through her studies in Stockholm, Lagerlöf reacted against the realism of contemporary Swedish-language writers such as August Strindberg. She began her first novel, Gösta Berling's Saga, while working as a teacher in Landskrona in 1887. A visit in 1900 to the American Colony in Jerusalem became the inspiration for Lagerlöf's book by that name. The royal family and the Swedish Academy gave her substantial financial support to continue her passion. Jerusalem was also acclaimed by critics, who began comparing her to Homer and Shakespeare, so that she became a popular figure both in Sweden and abroad. By 1895, she gave up her teaching to devote herself to her writing. In 1902, Lagerlöf was asked by the National Teacher's Association to write a geography book for children. She wrote The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, a novel about a boy from the southernmost part of Sweden, who had been shrunk to the size of a thumb and who travelled on the back of a goose across the country. Lagerlöf mixed historical and geographical facts about the provinces of Sweden with the tale of the boy's adventures until he managed to return home and was restored to his normal size. The novel is one of Lagerlöf's most well-known books, and it has been translated into more than 30 languages._x000D_ Content:_x000D_ The Wonderful Adventures of Nils _x000D_ Christ Legends _x000D_ Charlotte Löwensköld_x000D_ The Emperor of Portugallia_x000D_ Invisible Links _x000D_ The Girl from the Marsh Croft _x000D_ The Treasure _x000D_ Jerusalem _x000D_ The Miracles of Antichrist _x000D_ Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness _x000D_ The Story of Gösta Berling

Book Synopsis 20 Years to Life... a Memoir by : T. T Hartman
Download or read book 20 Years to Life... a Memoir written by T. T Hartman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born on Flag Day, 1935, the same year Social Security was enacted. Consequently, I have always felt a tug of birthday patriotism and as a child I secretly hoped the flags might be flying for my benefit. Growing up with the SS system has been a comfort, as well. I didn't mind contributing to the pot all during my working years and I cretainly appreciate the pay out during retirement. Graduating from journalism school and working for ten years as a newspaper reporter and magazine editor gave me a chance to write about and promote what's right with America. My generation saw dramatic changes throughout the 30s, 40s and 50s, which paralleled my coming of age over a 20 year span. Recounting some of these events and how they impacted me as an only child with a bit of an attitude, is the theme of the momoir.
Download or read book Vacation written by Deb Olin Unferth and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-03-22 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “enthralling headscratcher of a first novel . . . weaves an intricate tale of quests and escapes” as a man follows his wife who follows a mysterious stranger (Publishers Weekly). Deb Olin Unferth’s award-winning debut novel is “an off-kilter ode to obsession” with a “richly textured, often surprising linguistic landscape” (The Rumpus). In it, a man named Myers has noticed that his wife has suddenly become suspiciously absent in the evenings. He decides to start following her on her evening escapades, hoping to discover her betrayal. Instead, he soon discovers she is following a man named Gray, who happens to be a former classmate of Myers, and whose own marriage is falling apart. What follows is an unusual, unsettling, and wildly entertaining novel by the acclaimed author of Minor Robberies. With deadpan humor and skewed wordplay, Deb Olin Unferth weaves a mystery of hope and heartbreak. Winner of the Cabell First Novel Award.
