Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many books written for the Piano, Violin, etc., entirely devoted to Technic. This Work is especially written to enable the Student, by practice and application, to overcome any obstacle which may occur in musical passages written for the Cornet. By controlling the Wind Power to play these Exercises as written, in one breath, the Student will acquire ENDURANCE without strain or injury. Train the Muscles which control the Lips, to make them elastic and strong, as only a slight pressure is necessary, and not brute force. The highest as well as the lowest notes can be played with equal tone quality if practiced according to the instructions that precede each Study. Every Cornet Player should have reached a degree of excellence before attempting to play these Exercises. To become an Expert on the Cornet, one should be familiar with as many Cornet Methods as possible, and so gain the experience of each. Every Exercise in this Book is possible, and not so very difficult if practiced slowly at first, and not too long at a time. I have used them for my daily practice for years, and they have been the means of my reaching the highest notes after playing a two-hour Concert, also of preserving my lips so that they never tire, and what has been a help to me is surely good for other Cornet Players. You cannot expect to attain the highest point of excellence without hard work and perseverance. Never be perfectly satisfied with yourself. Try to make some improvement each day, feeling that it is a pleasure to have conquered that which seemed an impossibility at first. Do not neglect to correct immediately the least fault you make. Bad habits are easily formed, but are difficult to remedy. There are few Celebrated Cornet Soloists, although thousands play the instrument. Most players abuse their practicing by not knowing the proper way, and neglecting to pay more attention to the elementary work. These Studies have been found to be excellent for Clarinet Players as well as Cornet Players. The Clarinet being a Wind Instrument also, all these Exercises will appeal to the Player of that Instrument by following the same instructions.

If the Arban book is the trumpet player's 'Bible,' then I'd have to say Inside John Haynie's Studio is the trumpet teacher's 'Bible.'"-Ronald Romm, founder, Canadian Brass, and professor of trumpet, University of Illinois "The essays in this remarkable volume go far beyond trumpet pedagogy. . . . John's concern for educating the whole person, not just cramming for the job market, emanates from every page. This book showcases a teaching career that has become legendary."-James Scott, dean of the College of Music, University of North Texas "The principle that pervades my entire educational philosophy did not come from education or psychology classes; it did not come from the many sermons preached by my Dad and hundreds of other pulpiteers. It came from John Haynie's studio."-Douglas Smith, Mildred and Ernest Hogan Professor of Music, Southern Baptist Theological SeminaryAUTHOR." -- Publisher.

Book excerpt: I believe men are moved like a ship on the sea of life by two forces, which are not always working in concert. These forces are our heart and our soul. Whereas our mind provides logical processing of life's data and all our physical activities, it is the heart that adds feelings, desires and passion, and the soul that gives guidance for what is good or bad, right or wrong, wise or foolish. As a result, when the heart and soul are not in agreement, we have a struggle within us that dates back to Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel. This story reflects the struggles of one man's soul as he deals with broken promises-corporate and personal. It is told with the storyteller's license and the author's privilege of creating characters who, at times, act as he would like them to. Nevertheless, the story is based on real lives, events and struggles. If my story, or the events herein remind you of yourself, I hope they have a positive impact upon your life and help you learn the true beauty of forgiveness, grace and love. May you live for the possibilities of the future, rather than be bound by the reality of your past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last, an organized regimen of Reinhardt routines presented in a manner that builds every aspect of your playing: range, endurance, sound, technique, shakes, breathing, articulation, key fluency, tonguing, slurring, multiple tonguing, consistency . . . it's all here. For years people have been asking for a collection of Reinhardt routines that would work without the benefit of studying with Reinhardt. Most dedicated Reinhardt students know that's a tall order, because you can't just turn a player loose with many of the Reinhardt routines ? every routine had a specific purpose and was assigned at a specific time. Reinhardt knew there was no ?one size fits all? way of teaching brass players. But thanks to Dave Sheetz and Rich Willey, a set of routines has been laid out, about half of which are based on his never-before-published revisions to his Manual of Studies. These comprise a rotating Nine Day plan followed by a series of Supplemental Routines (including Reinhardt's now-famous Warm Up #57), all of which players will benefit from simply by reading the instructions and playing the drills accordingly. The Reinhardt Routines'a total embouchure development plan has what it takes to develop that embouchure you've been dreaming of. It's all laid out for you right here, at last.Forty-four pages, printed on high quality paper, GBC comb-bound with heavy (10 ml.) mylar protective covers.

Leading jazz players have used this method for years, but this is the first time it has been published in book form. The author offers a comprehensive guide to improvisation on any instrument through chord changes in any key. Book excerpt: Starting Out Right: Beginning Band Pedagogy is the only complete resource for organizing, planning, and teaching beginning woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The book covers every aspect of teaching beginning band students from the first sounds on the instruments through the first full-band performances. It is the only comprehensive reference that offers step-by-step guidelines for teaching each beginning band instrument, as well as organizing and running a successful beginning band program. Based on the public school teaching experience of the author, the book is designed for use in undergraduate methods and pedagogy classes as well as for clinics and workshops at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This book is also designed to be a reference for the many novice teachers who lead beginning bands or those teachers whose expertise is not in the band realm. While the focus of the book is on teaching beginning band, much of the book can be of use to band instructors at any grade level. The book is divided into several parts, which cover the sound-to-sign-to-theory approach to teaching musical literacy; child development as it relates to teaching music; recruiting and retaining students; developing fundamental sounds and skills on each woodwind, brass, and percussion instrument; teaching students to read tonal and rhythmic music notation; and selecting and rehearsing beginning band solo, ensemble, and full-band music. The book also addresses curriculum design, scheduling, and staffing of band programs. Ideas about managing student records, inventory, and equipment are also given special attention. Written in a casual narrative style, the book features real-world examples of how the principles in the book might be applied to actual teaching situations. Another special feature of the book is a set of early field-experience application exercises. Starting Out Right guides readers as they explore a comprehensive individual and ensemble approach to teaching each woodwind, brass, and percussion instrument.
