When Jennifer and her family put down roots in an unspoiled community on West Falkland, they can't help but see the unruly climate and the close proximity to a frozen wasteland. How could a place like this be worth fighting for?The Carters quickly learn that the Falklands way of life is friendliness and self-sufficiency. Their new life becomes one of abundant wildlife and growing their own food, but it never strays from the island's true British identity. Part homesteading, part off-the-grid, and all charm, this loving testimony to the resilient people of the islands will have you adding the Falklands to your bucket list in an instant. My Falkland Islands Life is the story of one family's adventure in a British territory 8,000 miles from the United Kingdom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated second edition of Bradt's Falkland Islands remains the only standalone guide to this British Overseas Territory and is ideal for both independent and cruise visitors alike. New for this edition is a dedicated full-colour wildlife and natural history section, as well as all the most recent details needed for a smooth trip, from planning and history to Stanley restaurants and hotels, conservation issues, wildlife watching trips and how to explore beyond the capital. East and West Falkland are covered, and so too are Sea Lion, Pebble, Carcass, Saunders, Keppel, Weddell, Staats and Beaver islands. Situated in the South Atlantic Ocean over 300 miles from South America the Falkland Islands are one of the truly wild places in the world, a photographer's delight home to albatrosses, penguins and other wildlife as well as to over 3,000 people. The Falkland Islands are a must-visit location for those interested in the wild outdoors, especially anyone wanting to see penguins, seals and lots more. It's not all about penguins, though, as the islands' abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery along with comfortable accommodation, good wholesome food and welcoming people create a wonderful place to visit. The thriving town of Stanley gives way to the wild open spaces of the 'camp' with its scattered settlements, long sandy beaches, isolated islands and rocky outcrops. With Bradt's Falkland Islands you can plan how to fly between islands, discover the 'camp' (rural areas), visit multiple penguin colonies, sample a wide range of cakes and cookies at a 'smoko' (morning or afternoon tea break), watch Black-browed Albatrosses, and visit the magnificent collection of artefacts and curios from around the islands at the new Historic Dockyard Museum. Whatever your interest, this is the essential guide for a successful trip.

BANG! went the guns of the Old Iron Woman Raymond Briggs's visceral take on the Falklands War is uncompromising in its dark and moving satire of the build-up and aftermath of the conflict. This controversial book's infamous stars - General Leopoldo Galtieri and Margaret Thatcher - are depicted as robotic caricatures with a pointless blood lust. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969 Jean Austin's husband was appointed Colonial Secretary of the Falkland Islands and they were transported to a remote outpost of the British colonies. While there Austin immersed herself in island life, fulfilling the duties of a Colonial Secretary's wife. "A Falklands Diary" is her sensitive and perceptive memoir of these years.Engaging and illuminating, "A Falklands Diary" paints a portrait of a mostly static culture defined by its remoteness and barren geography. At the same time, Austin's story reveals how global politics were slowly changing the Falklands' relationship with the rest of the world. Although seemingly removed from the drama of the Falklands War of the following decade, Austin's experience foreshadows the impending conflict and the Islands' growing geopolitical significance, casting fresh light on the history of these enigmatic islands.

Book excerpt: The idea of this book is to show The Falkland Island Battle Sites in SUNLIGHT. The 5000-plus British Troops would only have seen snow, rain, gale force winds very little daylight and extreme cold. The Island is bleak in the winter but being lucky to return in a Spring and again in an Autumn I saw the island in a different light. I hope that those who fought in the war there in 82 and have not been lucky enough to return in peace time can enjoy my pictures. The Falklands has changed and will never be the same as before 1982.The population has more than doubled and the way of life changed with it. The one thing that the Island will always have, is the memory that in 1982 the whole life of the Island was defended by so many worthy men and women and remains British.

Book excerpt: Chris Burwell charts one man’s career in aviation from joining the RAF in 1969 aged 18, to having responsibility for training pilots for the world’s major airlines nearly 50 years later. After training at RAF Cranwell and RAF Valley and a tour as a flying instructor on Jet Provosts, he joined the Harrier Force, flying on front-line squadrons in the UK and Germany during the Cold War and as an instructor on the Harrier Conversion Unit. Detachments to Belize in 1977, the Falklands (twice), ejection from a Harrier GR3, introducing FLIR and NVG to the Harrier front line and operational missions in Northern Iraq are all covered in entertaining detail. After 30 years of service, the author spent 12 years with Cobham, managing their Teesside base and flying the Falcon 20 on operational training for the military and the King Air 200 on international flight calibration tasks. Finally, he spent four years in Spain with Flight Training Europe (FTE) Jerez with responsibility for the flying training of a new generation of pilots. Through his experience as a pilot, leader and manager gained over many years, his valuable insights into military and civilian flying operations are both engrossing and noteworthy. Highly recommended to readers of both disciplines.
