For narrator Matt, “the greatest comfort of surfing comes in the sureness and instinct.” Matt is not just coming of age, he’s coming out, and in the sun-bleached world of the North Carolina beaches his burgeoning sexuality can toss as many curves as a wave. Through his longings and self-discovery, Matt knows he cannot let others triumph over being the man he knows to be. As he says, “Being a surfer meant you got out, faced your own fears, and did it.” So too does Matt, in this stirring, memorable novel. Jay Quinn’s Lambda-nominated books transcend the traditional gay novel, exploring universal issues of marriage, aging parents, addiction, and attraction, all while presenting unique characters and page-turning drama.

Book excerpt: (Published as a Morris Jesup Book in association with the Westport Library, Westport, Connecticut) Written by an intimate participant in the turbulent civil rights movement in Mississippi, Nobody Said Amen tells the stories of two families’ lives, one white, one black, as they navigate the challenging, tilting landscape created by the coming of “outside agitators” and social change to the Mississippi Delta in the 1960s. Owner of a great plantation, Luke Claybourne is a product of Southern attitudes, a decent man who feels responsible for the black families who make his plantation run, but who is loathe to accept the changes necessary for its survival. When he loses his plantation, his entire world is shattered. Led by his wife, Willy, and their friendship with a Northern journalist, Luke is forced to come to terms with a new way of life in the post--Civil Rights era South. Meanwhile, Jimmy Mack, a young black Mississippian leading a group of students who have come to Shiloh to help blacks gain the right to vote, has become a target of the Klan—savagely beaten while in jail and threatened with a burning cross. His love affair with Eula, a Claybourne employee, highlights the tensions and hazards of trying to love in the shadow of a racist world. Rich with a colorful roster of the people in Shiloh, Nobody Said Amen tells a triumphant American tale.

Life was not fair for Dalphne from being rape, teen pregnancy, being homeless, and feeling worthless; no one loved her or cared for her. Her home life wasn't ideal: her mother showed her no love, and her father was there but did not protect her against her mother's wrath. After being kicked out in the streets, Dalphne only dreamed of love and success. When everything else fell, she decided to be successful by any means necessary and turned to the life of a stripper. Being a stripper allowed her to support herself and pay for her college tuition. She felt stuck and gave up on love because of her life as a stripper. But in the end, love found her and changed her life around completely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Ruth Carolyn Spies-Laudon. Born in 1949 to Bud and Flossie Spies (Wayne and Florence) and I have one sibling, Danny Spies. I lived in a berg called Hinton, Iowa with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. I graduated from college with a major in Spanish, minors in Psychology and Sociology with 10 hours in Christian religious classes. I have been married to my soul mate and husband for 32 years. We have no children but we have many nieces and nephews, and now many many great nieces and nephews which have blessed our lives. I have written some poetry as a child and through the years but in March 2005 I was anointed by the Lord to write Christian poetry (some whimsical) and have written over 400 poems. I’ve selected what I felt were the best in this book, Reflections of Ruth. I enjoy writing poetry and I really feel that I am the liaison between God and the paper that people read. I also immensely enjoy taking pictures of natures' rainbows, trees, flowers, lakes, barns, people — everything. I then collage my poetry with my photography as presents to friends and family. May all who read the pages of this book find that they are loved by our Heavenly Father. I find it soothing to be able to write about the Lord and all the blessings He has bestowed upon me.

Book excerpt: Tegan Alice Slone is struggling to survive in the forests of Southern Indiana when Emperial Police capture her and take her to a reeducation center. The year is 2084, and the president is a madman that the people are afraid to stand up to. He has ultimate power over them all and will not surrender it. He created the Proclamation about Others. Others are "anyone who is a nontaxpaying citizen or noncitizen" and are to be put into reeducation centers. It is also a well-known fact that anyone who doesn't agree with him is relocated to a reeducation center. Everyone knows that these are really concentration camps, and despite what the government says, no one's reeducation is ever complete. Tegan decides to use her faith to not only get herself through the struggles at the center where she has been incarcerated but to try to bring others to faith in Christ and His ever-present love. By getting people to cooperate and get along, she paints a target on her back with the higher-ups. Will she survive, or will she die trying to bring others to Christ?
