Download or read book Noah's Arkive written by Jeffrey J. Cohen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely rethinking of the archetypal story of Noah, the great flood, and who was left behind as the waters rose Most people know the story of Noah from a children’s bible or a play set with a colorful ship, bearded Noah, pairs of animals, and an uncomplicated vision of survival. Noah’s ark, however, will forever be haunted by what it leaves to the rising waters so that the world can begin again. In Noah’s Arkive, Jeffrey J. Cohen and Julian Yates examine the long history of imagining endurance against climate catastrophe—as well as alternative ways of creating refuge. They trace how the elements of the flood narrative were elaborated in medieval and early modern art, text, and music, and now shape writing and thinking during the current age of anthropogenic climate change. Arguing that the biblical ark may well be the worst possible exemplar of human behavior, the chapters draw on a range of sources, from the Epic of Gilgamesh and Ovid’s tale of Deucalion and Pyrrah, to speculative fiction, climate fiction, and stories and art dwelling with environmental catastrophe. Noah’s Arkive uncovers the startling afterlife of the Genesis narrative written from the perspective of Noah’s wife and family, the animals on the ark, and those excluded and so left behind to die. This book of recovered stories speaks eloquently to the ethical and political burdens of living through the Anthropocene. Following a climate change narrative across the millennia, Noah’s Arkive surveys the long history of dwelling with the consequences of choosing only a few to survive in order to start the world over. It is an intriguing meditation on how the story of the ark can frame how we think about environmental catastrophe and refuge, conservation and exclusion, offering hope for a better future by heeding what we know from the past.
Download or read book Noah's Heart written by Neil Rowland and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noah's Heart is an exciting, humorous and moving story: a celebration of life from the view of human vulnerability. With an unusual and atmospheric setting around Bristol, England, we are invited into the unique and colourful world of Noah Sheer: keen balloonist, former student activist, ardent music fan, and a concerned father of three children. An ideal romantic getaway to Crete is cut short by a heart scare. Back home, the consultant warns him to avoid further shocks and stresses. But is that possible? He can't stop worrying about his family. He would never abandon his life’s ideals and passions. These come from university days; around his love affair with ex-wife and childhood sweetheart, Elizabeth. Modern love – in the shape of feisty music executive Corrina – proves that the world really has changed. His eldest son should be finishing his exams but enjoys joyriding in an edgier part of town. Daughter Angela has taken up a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle rather than her university place. She brings her father up against the local demimonde, from criminals to new hippies. Our children can test us, but he is led an unfamiliar dance. His many adventures include an urban riot and a free music festival. This father and daughter relationship has to undergo a bumpy ride, before the pair can reconcile. Noah must learn to accept her, if he’s to rediscover their deep bond. The final crisis looms when Noah sets off on an emergency balloon flight to save her.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • More than one million copies sold! A “brilliant” (Lupita Nyong’o, Time), “poignant” (Entertainment Weekly), “soul-nourishing” (USA Today) memoir about coming of age during the twilight of apartheid “Noah’s childhood stories are told with all the hilarity and intellect that characterizes his comedy, while illuminating a dark and brutal period in South Africa’s history that must never be forgotten.”—Esquire Winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor and an NAACP Image Award • Named one of the best books of the year by The New York Time, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, NPR, Esquire, Newsday, and Booklist Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle. Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.
Download or read book Noah's Wife written by T K Thorne and published by Teresa K Thorne. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year for Historical Fiction—Noah's wife is Na'amah, a beautiful and brilliant young girl of ancient Turkey wishes only to be a shepherdess on her beloved hills—a desire shattered by the hatred of her powerful brother, the love of two men, and a disaster that threatens her world. Na’amah tells her story and sees the world through the unique lens of a condition known (today) as Asperger Syndrome. Her savant abilities and penchant to speak truth forces her down a dangerous path in an age of change—a time of challenge to the goddess' ancient ways, when cultures clash and the earth itself is unstable. The Biblical account of Noah's wife only gives us a nameless woman who bears Noah's children and is with him in the ark. T.K. Thorne, an award winning author, has filled in the story with her imagination based on evidence of a great flood in the Black Sea region almost 7,000 years ago.

Book Synopsis The Vet at Noah's Ark by : Dr. Doug Mader
Download or read book The Vet at Noah's Ark written by Dr. Doug Mader and published by Apollo Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From renowned veterinarian Dr. Doug Mader comes a stirring account of his fight to protect his animal patients and human staff amid the dangerous realities of inner-city life and the Los Angeles riots—and a celebration of the remarkable human-animal bond. The life of a veterinarian is challenging: keeping up with advances in medical care, making difficult decisions about people’s beloved companions, and, in Dr. Doug Mader’s case, navigating the social unrest in Los Angeles in the early 1990s. As one of the few exotic animal experts in California, he was just as likely to be treating a lion as a house cat. The Vet at Noah's Ark: Stories of Survival from an Inner-City Animal Hospital follows Dr. Mader and his staff over the course of a year at Noah's Ark Veterinary Hospital, an inner-city LA area veterinary hospital where Dr. Mader treats not only dogs and cats, but also emus, skunks, snakes, foxes, monkeys, and a host of other exotic animals. This real life drama is set against the backdrop of the trial of four police officers in the Rodney King case, as well as the violent aftermath following their acquittal. This is a book about survival, both of the pets that Dr. Mader and his staff try to save on a daily basis, as well as the staff themselves. Living in the harsh reality of the city, surrounded by gangs, drugs, violence, traffic, smog, and deadly riots, they must overcome and rise above, for their own survival and that of the animals who need them. This awe-inspiring account is told through Dr. Mader's riveting storytelling—as Carl Hiaasen writes, "Doug is fearless and dedicated," and "a damn good storyteller."
