Book excerpt: For decades educators and cultural critics have deplored the corrosive effects of electronic media on the national consciousness. The average American reads less often, writes less well. And, numbed by the frenetic image-bombardment of music videos, commercials and sound bites, we may also, it is argued, think less profoundly. But wait. Is it just possible that some good might arise from the ashes of the printed word? Most emphatically yes, argues Mitchell Stephens, who asserts that the moving image is likely to make our thoughts not more feeble but more robust. Through a fascinating overview of previous communications revolutions, Stephens demonstrates that the charges that have been leveled against television have been faced by most new media, including writing and print. Centuries elapsed before most of these new forms of communication would be used to produce works of art and intellect of sufficient stature to overcome this inevitable mistrust and nostalgia. Using examples taken from the history of photography and film, as well as MTV, experimental films, and Pepsi commercials, the author considers the kinds of work that might unleash, in time, the full power of moving images. And he argues that these works--an emerging computer-edited and -distributed "new video"--have the potential to inspire transformations in thought on a level with those inspired by the products of writing and print. Stephens sees in video's complexities, simultaneities, and juxtapositions, new ways of understanding and perhaps even surmounting the tumult and confusions of contemporary life. Sure to spark lively--even heated--debate, The Rise of the Image, the Fall of the Word belongs in the library of millennium-watchers everywhere.

Book excerpt: Poetry is certainly a form of art that I appreciate. When I want to express myself, I write on paper, and then I read my words out loud. What I love most about poetry is that it has no boundaries, and I personally believe that freedom of expression is poetry's best friend. Poetry allows me to evolve in so many ways and challenges me to learn more and create art for the mind. Sometimes I'm at a loss for words to write; at times it takes minutes, hours, days, and months for me to write a new piece. Just like any relationship, poetry requires patience, dedication, and understanding. Anyone can write a poem if they put their mind to it, but to write continuous poetry, you need the passion for it. Some may view my work as prose or spoken word; to me personally they all come from the same family, so if you are probably wondering what I write, I write poetry.

This book was released on 2024-10-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even an atheist has a spirituality. Spirituality can be considered as human, rather than narrowly religious. Many today call themselves ‘spiritual but not religious’. It is impossible to define, and so various limited models are suggested by researchers. This book explores these issues and proposes a new model based upon the oeuvre of the Bulgarian/French semiologist, philosopher and psychoanalyst, Julia Kristeva. Kristeva is an atheist with a respect for religion, its valuing of the non-discursive, and its role in therapy. Her work is supplemented and contrasted by her peers, Hélène Cixous and Luce Irigaray. The author proposes a model, based on Kristeva’s work, where themes of Language, Love, Alterity and Transcendence interact to form what we call ‘spirituality’, rather than simply being unconnected aspects of it. Suggestions are given of how this resulting model can be applied to Secondary Education (Religious Education in particular), and also approaches to Healthcare Education.
