Download or read book Necessary Dreams written by Anna Fels and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2013-07-17 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book about how women perceive, are prepared for, and cope with ambition and achievement, psychiatrist Anna Fels examines ambition at the deepest psychological level. Cutting to the core of what ambition can provide—the essential elements of a fulfilling life—Fels describes why, for women but not for men, ambition still remains fraught with often painful conflict. Fels draws on case studies, research, interviews, and autobiographies of accomplished and celebrated women past and present—writers, artists, architects, politicians, actors—to explore the ways in which women are brought up to avoid recognition and visibility in favor of traditional feminine values and why they often choose to nurture and defer to rather than compete with men. She poses invaluable questions: What is the nature of ambition and how important is it in a woman’s life? What are the forces that promote or impede its development? To what extent does ambition go against a woman’s very nature? And she challenges currently held theories about the state of mind and the needs of men. Incisive and highly readable, Necessary Dreams is a unique exploration of the options and obstacles women face in the pursuit of their goals. It is a book that every woman will want—and need—to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every event we experience and every person we meet has intentionally been put in our path to help us lead more conscious and fulfilled lives," says Cheryl Richardson, the New York Times bestselling author of Take Time for Your Life, Life Makeovers, and Stand Up for Your Life. In her new book -- her most personal work to date -- she'll show you that, once you learn to view your life from this perspective, the person who smiles at you while you're walking down the street is no longer a stranger, the phone call from an old friend who crossed your mind the day before is no longer a surprise, and the failed relationship that left you brokenhearted is no longer a source of bitterness and pain. Instead, these experiences -- examples of what Richardson calls "the unmistakable touch of grace" -- are seen as blessings in disguise, gifts that make you stronger, more conscious, and, ultimately, more alive. To read this beautiful, intimate, and profoundly inspiring book is like having a conversation with Richardson herself. Filled with illuminating stories, provocative experiments, and striking examples of how grace has influenced her own life, Richardson will help you recognize that your life is being influenced, too, in ways you may never have imagined. The Unmistakable Touch of Grace helps you to see the hidden miracles that occur every day -- and gives you the courage to use them to make your life more meaningful, magical, hopeful, and complete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a love story about a Craigslist “missed connection” post that gives two people a second chance at love fifteen years after they were separated in New York City. To the Green-eyed Lovebird: We met fifteen years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House. You called us fast friends. I like to think it was more. We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn’t stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other. Yet, somehow, it all fell apart. We lost touch the summer after graduation when I went to South America to work for National Geographic. When I came back, you were gone. A part of me still wonders if I pushed you too hard after the wedding… I didn’t see you again until a month ago. It was a Wednesday. You were rocking back on your heels, balancing on that thick yellow line that runs along the subway platform, waiting for the F train. I didn’t know it was you until it was too late, and then you were gone. Again. You said my name; I saw it on your lips. I tried to will the train to stop, just so I could say hello. After seeing you, all of the youthful feelings and memories came flooding back to me, and now I’ve spent the better part of a month wondering what your life is like. I might be totally out of my mind, but would you like to get a drink with me and catch up on the last decade and a half? M

Book Synopsis Northrop Frye's Notebooks on Renaissance Literature by : Michael Dolzani
Download or read book Northrop Frye's Notebooks on Renaissance Literature written by Michael Dolzani and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Northrop Frye's first book, Fearful Symmetry (1947), elevated the reputation of William Blake from the status of a minor eccentric to that of a major Romantic poet, Frye in fact saw Blake as a poet (and, consequently, himself as a critic) not of the Romantic period, but of the Renaissance. As such, Frye's meditations on the Renaissance are particularly valuable. This volume collects six of Frye's notebooks and five sets of his typed notes on subjects related to Renaissance literature. Michael Dolzani divides these notes into three categories: those on Spenser and the epic tradition; those on Shakespearean drama and, more widely, the dramatic tradition from Old Comedy to the masque; and those on lyric poetry and non-fiction prose. The organization of this volume reflects 'a comprehensive study of Renaissance Symbolism' in three volumes, which Frye proposed to the Guggenheim Foundation in 1949. Frye received a Guggenheim fellowship, but never wrote the book; nevertheless, his application, part of which is also included here, is an important document. The Guggenheim application not only reveals the outlines of Frye's thinking about literature, it also uncovers his plans for his future creative life during the crucial period between his completion of Fearful Symmetry and his absorption in the writing of Anatomy of Criticism. In addition to providing insight into Frye's thinking process, the material collected into this key volume in the Collected Works is of particular importance because much of it has no direct counterpart in any of Frye's other published works.
