Book Synopsis The Golden Yoke by : Rebecca Redwood French
Download or read book The Golden Yoke written by Rebecca Redwood French and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Yoke is a remarkable achievement. It is the first elaboration of the legal, cultural, and ideological dimensions of precommunist Tibetan jurisprudence, a unique legal system that maintains its secularism within a thoroughly Buddhist setting. Layer by layer, Rebecca Redwood French reconstructs the daily operation of law in Tibet before the Chinese invasion in 1959. In the Tibetans' own words, French identifies their courts, symbols, and personnel and traces the procedures for petitioning and filing documents. There are stories here from judges, legal conciliators, and lay people about murder, property disputes, and divorce. French shows that Tibetan law is deeply embedded in its Buddhist culture and that the system evolved not from the rules and judgments but from what people actually do and say. In what amounts to a fully developed cosmology, she describes the cultural foundation that informs the system: myths, notions of time and conflux, inner morality, language patterns, rituals, use of space, symbols, and concepts. Based on extensive readings of Tibetan legal documents and codes, interviews with Tibetan scholars, and the reminiscences of Tibetans at home and in exile, this generously illustrated, elegantly written work is a model of outstanding research. French combines the talents of a legal anthropologist with those of a former law practitioner to develop a new field of study that has implications for other judicial systems, including our own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vote suppression is the key issue to the 2020 Election and Palast is the expert to explain why.... Has Trump already stolen the 2020 election? Vote theft was once considered to be a marginal issue that no one wanted to talk about, but as the stakes have risen and the facts have become known--in large part thanks to this author--it is now recognized as one of the central issues deciding our presidential elections. The scope is staggering. In the Georgia 2018 midterm election alone--the testing ground--Republican voting officials quietly removed half a million voters from the voter rolls--including Martin Luther King's ninety-two-year-old cousin Christine Jordan. How Trump Stole 2020 is the story of the racially poisonous schemes to steal the 2020 election, the political operatives behind the trickery--and the hard right billionaires funding it all, written by the investigative reporter who has been covering this story from the outset.

Book Synopsis Bricks & Brownstone by : Charles Lockwood
Download or read book Bricks & Brownstone written by Charles Lockwood and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The much-awaited reissue and reexpression of the classic New York row-house book Bricks and Brownstone, with all-new and updated text, new color photography, and luxury slipcase. The classic book Bricks & Brownstone, the first and still the only volume to examine in depth the changing form and varied architectural styles of the much-loved New York City row house, or brownstone, was first published in 1972. That edition helped pave the way for a brownstone revival that has transformed New York's historic neighborhoods over the past half-century. Rizzoli published a revised and expanded edition of the book in 2003, to much fanfare. This edition revisits the classic comprehensively, with an updated text and additional chapters, and an abundance of specially commissioned color photography. It offers to an eager audience the long-awaited re-issue of the landmark volume in a brilliant new form. Boasting more than 250 color and black-and-white images, this definitive volume traces New York's row houses from colonial days through World War I, examining in detail the Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, and Second Empire architectural styles of the early and mid-nineteenth century, as well as the Neo-Grec, Queen Anne, Romanesque, Renaissance Revival, and Colonial Revival styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The new Bricks & Brownstone remains the gold standard reference on brownstone architecture and interiors, and one of the few truly classic histories of New York's urbanism and real estate development.
