Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Must the War Go On? WE ought with reverence to approach that tremendous divinity that loves courage, but commands counsel. War never leaves, where it found a nation. It is never to be entered into without mature deliberation; not a deliberation lengthened out into a perplexing indecision, but a deliberation leading to a sure and fixed judgment. When so taken up, it is not to be abandoned without reason as valid, as fully, and as extensively considered. Peace may be made as unadvisedly as war. Nothing is so rash as fear; and the counsels of pusillanimity very rarely put off, whilst they are always sure to aggravate, the evils from which they would fly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's War To tho end that the memory of tho men and women whose valor and sacrifices defended and preserved the Republic through the trial as by fire of tho gloat civil war in America shall not perish from the earth; that their descendants and successors may appreciate tho splendor of the steadfast patriotism and patient resolute endurance to which humanity owes so much; and in the hope that the world may the better understand and value the lessons taught by a divinely ordained educational process, this story has been written. Persuaded that its faults must be many and grievous (since, how should a plain layman, sometime soldier, with no claims to literary skill, avoid them?), and conscious of its inadequacy, the author submits it; trusting that it may, at least in some small degree, accomplish the work whereunto it is sent. Ikli considers a variety of examples from twentieth-century history and examines specific strategies that effectively "won the peace." In the new preface, Ikli explains how U.S. political decisions and military strategy and tactics in Iraq have delayed, and indeed jeopardized, a successful end to hostilities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War to Date: March 1, 1900 The numberless publications on the subject of the War, a welcome might conceivably await just one more - only a little one - which should enable the reader with a minimum of intellectual effort to form_a connected idea of the causes which led up to the terrible struggle now raging in South Africa, and the effects it has so far produced. Historically speaking no attempt has been made to do more than portray in outline the main characters and events which have figured upon the stage of Boer politics from the time of the Great Trek to the present day, and briefly sketch the varying scenes which have unfortunately culminated in the climax of war. The time i'or exhaustive treatment of the whole question is not yet. A book of this nature is obviously to a great extent a thing of shreds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Great War MY dear g., -i have written this book and you are going to read it - we are partners and must play up to each other. Let me tell you my idea Of how it should be done. My part is to give you the truth, the actual facts, well evidenced and clearly arranged. Your part is to read them in such a way as to understand them - that is, to understand not only what happened, but how heroic and how admirable are the qualities which lie behind. You will see, as you read, why I ask you to play up and do your part. It is because I cannot do it for you. I have told you here of good work and courage and endurance, such as deserve all the loudest adjectives that I could have shouted at you; but I have not shouted, and I have used as few adjectives as possible. It is you, not I, that must make the stories come alive. You will not, I hope, imagine that I have written coldly; no - but the hotter I got myself the more keenly I wished you to be kindled by your own feelings, and not by my words. If you find yourself glorying in these records as I do, come and tell me so when the War is over, and we will get a little music and make a noise together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War: From a Southern Stand-Point As to how' well the author has succeeded in her effort the reader must decide, and to do so fairly he should keep in mind the design of the work and think calmly of the great struggle and what may be the final outcome. In my judgment, all who thus act must go beyond the pinched patriotism of sectional ani mosities, and while deeply deploring the war with its sad phys ical and sadder moral effects, honor the heroic effort of the South. Although the work is intensely Southern, its spirit is excellent, all severity being carefully avoided by the author. I bespeak for it a cordial welcome at the hands of a generous public. R. Lin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Germany Makes War The book is an attempt to show how war can be successfully conducted with the enormous masses of men now thrown into a conflict between nations, the armies of millions that put the whole fighting power of a people into the battle line. General von Bernhardi insists that while certain fundamental principles of war must always hold good, their practical applica tion has to be considerably modified now that these armies of masses are brought into action, and have to employ weapons and appliances more efficient than any which were used in earlier wars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Great War, Vol. 1 This work in its original form appeared in twenty-four volumes between February 1915 and July mm, and was therefore written and published for the most part during the progress of the campaign. Begun as an experiment to pass the time during a period of enforced inaction, its large sales and the evidence forthcoming that it met a certain need induced me to continue it as a duty, and the bulk of it was written in the scanty leisure which I could snatch from service abroad and at home. Any narrative produced under such conditions must bristle with imperfections. It will contain many errors of fact. The writer cannot stage his drama or prepare the reader for a sudden change by a gradual revelation of its causes. His work must have something of the apparent inconsequence of real life. He records one month a sanguine mood and a hopeful forecast; three months later he will tell of depression and of expectations belied. He must set out interim judgments, and presently recant them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War It is the attempt of this book to show that the Civil War was more than a succession of battles; that it was a struggle between two civilizations, each the logical result of its environment, and each endeavoring to work out the best American interest as it saw it. That of the two civilizations, one was reactionary, and Opposed to both the humani tarian sentiments of the nineteenth century and the economic profit of the race, is quite as true as the fact that honesty and intelligence were about evenly divided in the contest. The motive for secession, slavery, was indefensible in the long run, but men brought up with that institution believed in it, and were led by it to believe that the Con stitution had not created a nation, a position in which they were contradicted by the facts of industry and the law of the land. On both counts, Slavery and secession, American history must adjudge the South to have been mistaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The whole nation must be a team in which each man shall play the part for which he is best fitted... Each man shall be classified for service in the place to which it shall best serve the general good to call him... The significance of this cannot be overstated. It is a new thing in our history and a landmark in our progress. It is a new manner of accepting and vitalizing our duty to give ourselves with thoughtful devotion to the common purpose of us all.
