Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As people inside and outside of the church in America become more disillusioned with what they experience or see from the outside looking in, what will be the way forward for Jesus's bride the Church? In this book, I hope you will join me in taking a look into where we have come from and what might be a path forward. If we are not willing to take a look and wrestle with the church in our wandering instead of settling, can we forge that path forward? Join me as my wife and I took a trip around this country in our little camper in part to do some of that wrestling and wandering. Join me as I look back on a twenty-year career in full-time church staff ministry and twenty-plus years in church ministry as a volunteer committed to making church work in a local setting. But also, I sense along with others "a new work" that God is up to. Can a new mindset be instilled that will help us navigate that new way forward in a way that puts ministry back in the hands of all God's people? One that grasps a much more relational approach to bringing restoration to a waiting world. Like an orchestra tuning their instruments, Consumer Christianity is producing chaotic noise about God. Rather than adding to the noise, perhaps it is time for us to finally be silent, be still, and wait in anticipation for God to begin a new work. (The Divine Commodity by Skye Jethani) My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither or your ways my ways...for as high as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than yours and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first popular biography of a pioneering feminist thinker and writer of medieval Paris. The daughter of a court intellectual, Christine de Pizan dwelled within the cultural heart of late-medieval Paris. In the face of personal tragedy, she learned the tools of the book trade, writing more than forty works that included poetry, historical and political treatises, and defenses of women. In this new biography—the first written for a general audience—Charlotte Cooper-Davis discusses the life and work of this pioneering female thinker and writer. She shows how Christine de Pizan’s inspiration came from the world around her, situates her as an entrepreneur within the context of her times and place, and finally examines her influence on the most avant-garde of feminist artists, through whom she is slowly making a return into mainstream popular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LaHaye and Jenkins' best-selling apocalyptic fiction novel, 'Left Behind, ' is already so ridiculous that it's hard to make a parody of it. Yet the conservative Christian author, Nathan Wilson, bravely sets forth to push it over the top. Tweaked versions of all the original characters work together in an absurd tangle of Evangelical goofiness struggling to make sense of the pathetically gnostic vision of the original story. You won't want to miss all body parts, cats, and youth pastors left behind, Buff Williamson's Ivy League deductions, Haddie the Whore of Babylon, or the climactic struggle with the Tulsa Antichrist in a Christian "book store." If you regret reading 'Left Behind, ' read 'Right Behind' to ease that pain with laughter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing Ocean Environments in a Changing Climate summarizes the current state of several threats to the global oceans. What distinguishes this book most from previous works is that this book begins with a holistic, global-scale focus for the first several chapters and then provides an example of how this approach can be applied on a regional scale, for the Pacific region. Previous works usually have compiled local studies, which are essentially impossible to properly integrate to the global scale. The editors have engaged leading scientists in a number of areas, such as fisheries and marine ecosystems, ocean chemistry, marine biogeochemical cycling, oceans and climate change, and economics, to examine the threats to the oceans both individually and collectively, provide gross estimates of the economic and societal impacts of these threats, and deliver high-level recommendations. Nominated for a Katerva Award in 2012 in the Economy category State of the science reviews by known marine experts provide a concise, readable presentation written at a level for managers and students Links environmental and economic aspects of ocean threats and provides an economic analysis of action versus inaction Provides recommendations for stakeholders to help stimulate the development of policies that would help move toward sustainable use of marine resources and services
