Book excerpt: The profession of music therapy is receiving more and more recognition as an effective intervention in a variety of healthcare settings. Given this increased attention, the question of how to fund music therapy services also is being asked more frequently by many key decision makers. Discovering potential ways to "reimburse" or "cover" music therapy services through public and private third party payment systems has become a critical component to the business of music therapy. In order for music therapists to be successful in their practices, they must demonstrate competency regarding the current healthcare market, the insurance industry, and where music therapy fits within this environment. This book is designed to provide music therapists and related professionals with a basic understanding of the reimbursement process. Students, clinicians, and educators will find this resource helpful as they explore opportunities in healthcare funding. In addition to providing valuable resources and outlining specific guidelines, this book also includes the results of surveys and interviews with member music therapists reporting the successes with third party payment. Clinicians also will find marketing tools, sample forms, and coding information as practical supports to implementing the reimbursement process in their own practices.

Book excerpt: Social distancing precautions related to COVID-19 have had a significant impact on the delivery of music therapy services across the United States, and music therapists have had to adjust to changes in billing and regulation as well as the sudden need to deliver services via telehealth. The purpose of this research project was to collect data regarding the increased demand of information related to telehealth education, use of technology, and specific billing and regulation concerns from music therapists. Searches related to the categories of (a) billing, (b) technology, and (c) regulation were collected from the music therapy Facebook group, Music Therapists Unite (n.d). These searches were then compared according to (a) dates (January-February 2020 vs. March-April 2020), (b) poster status (student vs. professional), and (c) category (technology, billing, and regulation). Based on the results of this study, posts related to billing, technology, and regulation increased from January-February 2020 to March-April 2020. Posts related to technology increased the most extensively across both music therapy professionals and students before and after the COVID-19 pandemic was declared. The results of this study suggest that music therapy professionals and students' interest in knowledge related to technology during the COVID-19 pandemic increased. This increase is consistent with research that has shown that technology is increasingly integrated in the field of music therapy but understanding of and education about technology is still limited. While there is much uncertainty regarding when this pandemic will end, the changes brought about in the field of music therapy will surely have strong implications on the future development of the field.

This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many music therapists work in adult mental health settings after qualifying. For many, it will be a challenging and even daunting prospect. Yet until now, there has been no psychiatric music therapy text providing advice on illness management and recovery. The new edition of this established and acclaimed text provides the necessary breadth and depth to inform readers of the psychotherapeutic research base and show how music therapy can effectively and efficiently function within a clinical scenario. The book takes an illness management and recovery approach to music therapy specific to contemporary group-based practice. It is also valuable for administrators of music therapy, providing innovative theory-based approaches to psychiatric music therapy, developing and describing new ways to conceptualize psychiatric music therapy treatment, educating music therapists, stimulating research and employment, and influencing legislative policies. For the new edition, all chapters have been updated, and 2 new chapters added - on substance abuse, and the therapeutic alliance. An important aim of the book is to stimulate both critical thought and lifelong learning concerning issues, ideas, and concepts related to mental illness and music therapy. Critical thinking and lifelong learning have been - and will likely continue to be - essential aspirations in higher education. Moreover, contemporary views concerning evidence-based practice rely heavily upon the clinician's ability to think critically, seek a breadth of contradicting and confirmatory evidence, implement meta-cognition to monitor thoughts throughout processes, and synthesize and evaluate knowledge to make informed clinical decisions relevant and applicable to idiosyncratic contextual parameters. For both students and clinicians in music therapy, this is an indispensable text to help them learn, develop, and hone their skills in music therapy.
