Book excerpt: Music, Moonshine, and Murder unfolds amidst the hills of early 20th century North Carolina, a time when women's rights were scarce. Days were spent toiling in the fields under the scorching sun for meager wages, with Maggie Gross among those facing societal scorn as an unwed mother at just sixteen. Music offered solace in Maggie's life; adept with her banjo since childhood, she harbored dreams of gracing the Grand Ole Opry stage with the Carter Family. Amidst prejudice for her unconventional family, Maggie eventually wed Jim Setzer, settling in a lawless community where moonshine flowed as freely as judgment. Their union faced its sternest test one brisk October morning, an event that would reverberate through generations, reshaping the lives of Maggie's boys in unforeseen ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming to grips with the plot of this play is one of the challenges that you will be facing when watching it because nobody is who you think they are. Just like in real life when browsing on the web, it can be “just an illusion”! It is easy to say that Jim, Sally, and Greg take us along the winding road of a Cornelian drama, but the discoveries that you will endeavour to make will come from the absurdity and antics spoken and acted by the protagonists delving in irony. The absurd is central to the theme of this narrative and builds the magic of the play, shell shocked with verbal and active interactivity torpedoed at the spectators. The pedagogical aspect of this play is no mystery to anybody discovering this unique experience of an out-of-the-ordinary story leading us to laugh at our own life experiences. No F’in(g) Murder is part of a collection called The Virtual Dreaming ConneXtion, available also in French. Mavis-Christine Bedford was born in the very north of England then immigrated to Australia where she stayed for four years. On returning to England, she fell in love with a French man and has spent the rest of her life in France, first in the north then now in the south. She has a dog who takes her walking, and many hobbies such as cooking and baking her own bread. Mavis-Christine is fascinated by the chateaux and cathedrals in France and likes studying the symbolic thought that went into their building. She is also a linguist and enjoys learning new languages. Mavis-Christine is the author of four adventure stories expressing the dangerousness and violence of ending modern-day slavery. She has a son and three grandchildren and is in love with Provence, a land which inspires her creativity in the natural beauty of the village where she has been living for the past five years.

Book excerpt: With a thrilling, fast-paced narrative, award-winning journalist Douglas Perry vividly captures the sensationalized circus atmosphere that gave rise to the concept of the celebrity criminal- and gave Chicago its most famous story. The Girls of Murder City recounts two scandalous, sex-fueled murder cases and how an intrepid "girl reporter" named Maurine Watkins turned the beautiful, media-savvy suspects-"Stylish Belva" and "Beautiful Beulah"-into the talk of the town. Fueled by rich period detail and a cast of characters who seemed destined for the stage, The Girls of Murder City is a crackling tale that simultaneously presents the freewheeling spirit of the Jazz Age and its sober repercussions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder Ballads Old & New: A Dark and Bloody Record is an exploration of an age-old topic— our human need to document the horrors of the world around us. The murder ballad, here expanded to include songs about traumatic loss in modern variants and multiple styles, including punk, post-punk, alt-country, and folk. The book is a graveyard stroll past tombs both well-kept and half-hidden. Murder Ballads Old & New excavates facts about killers, victims, and the folkloric storytellers who disseminated their tales in song. Author Steven L. Jones focuses the tragic ballad as “an act of remembering and a soul-reckoning with the ineffable.” Songs examined range from obscure tunes from the founding days of the United States to familiar canonical songs learned in schoolrooms and honkytonks. Jones tackles each song in a manner that’s equal parts musicological, psychosocial, and genealogical as he uncovers stories that reveal larger contexts and maps the lineages of songs and themes, forebears, and ancestors. Murder Ballads Old & New includes a wide range of songs and performers from the relatively unknown (Boiled in Lead, Freakons, Nelstone’s Hawaiians) to the ironically famous (Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth). Highlights include tales of Muddy Waters guitar sideman Pat Hare, whose incendiary blues boast “I’m Gonna Murder My Baby” proved grimly prophetic. And honky-tonk pioneer Eddie Noack, whose morbid stab at late-career rebirth, “Psycho,” couldn’t match the bottomless tragedy of his own life. As well as Depression-era holdup man Pretty Boy Floyd, Schubert’s mythical Erlkönig, and the Manson Family. Murder Ballads Old & New is a compelling delve into the perennial American fascination with True Crime. Includes archival and historical black & white images.

Book excerpt: Murder To Music Rick Harrow, a British racehorse trainer, and his Kentucky-born wife, Happy, are thrilled when twin opera stars, Fran and Carla Purcell, enter their yard. Shortly after the twins buy horses, Carla is murdered. Three more famous artists in the music world are murdered, as Happy hones her skills as a sleuth to find the serial killer, her quest taking her to Australia, Scotland and Monaco. Murder In Marriage Rick Harrow, now the father of three, and his wife, Happy, become embroiled in a double death, which the police cannot decide is a suicide/murder, or what? While working as a horse trainer and buyer in Miami, Rick had strayed from the marital bed while Happy gave birth to their third child. Rick has had a scorching affair with Lois Blair, a wanton wife from the central-Florida town of Sunblair. On Christmas morning, Lois's step-son arrives at the Harrow's rented Miami cottage, and accuses Rick of having murdered his father. Had Rick killed the Senior Blair, an eminent attorney and scion of the founders of Sunblair? Had he murdered Lois as a cover-up? Happy travels to the central-Florida horse country, to Disney World, and into a swamp area to do her sleuthing. Murdered Mothers Rick Harrow, who has come up in the world of valuable racehorses thanks to winning races, particularly one in Tokyo with his Kentucky-born wife Happy in the saddle, suffers through an excruciating experience in Miami before being thrust into the throes of a horrific series of murders in Kentucky. There, in what was the peaceful town of Honeyville, the Harrows are caught up in four murders by a serial killer who targets nursing mothers. Meanwhile, they attend the equine Olympic events in Hong Kong, travel to Dubai, where again a femme fatale enters their lives in the shape of Mafalda, an Egyptian seductress who veers from international playgirl to Muslim Fundamentalist. Some were 19th century stage idols who reprised famous roles on film as early as 1894. One was born as early as 1829. Another was cast in the performance during which Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. One took her stage name from her native state. Some modern-day stars also began their careers on Broadway before appearing in films. This book details the careers of 300 performers who went from stage to screen in all genres of film. A few made only a single movie, others hundreds. Each entry includes highlights of the performer's career, a list of stage appearances and a filmography.

Book excerpt: In 1888 London was the capital of the greatest empire the world had ever known. In the West End the glittering lamps illuminated the homes of the rich and the emporiums that displayed the countless luxuries that they enjoyed. This was a city that reflected the wealth of the Victorian age, but there was also a dark side to Victorian London: vice and crime, degradation, poverty and despair. When an unknown killer began murdering prostitutes in Whitechapel the horrors of the East End were brought out of the shadows. In 1888 London was the capital of the most powerful empire the world had ever known and the largest city in Europe. In the West End a new city was growing, populated by the middle classes, the epitome of 'Victorian values'. Across the city the situation was very different. The East End of London had long been considered a nether world, a dark and dangerous place, and it embodied many of the fears of respectable Victorians. Using the Whitechapel murders of Jack the Ripper as a focal point, London's Shadows explores prostitution and poverty, revolutionary politics and Irish terrorism, immigration, the criminal underclass and the developing role of the Metropolitan Police. It also considers how the sensationalist New Journalism took the news of the Ripper murders to the furthest corners of the Empire. This is a new and fresh portrait of London at the height of Victoria's reign, revealing the dark underbelly of the city's history.
