Book Synopsis The Museums of Contemporary Art by : J. Pedro Lorente
Download or read book The Museums of Contemporary Art written by J. Pedro Lorente and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where, how, by whom and for what were the first museums of contemporary art created? These are the key questions addressed by J. Pedro Lorente in this new book. In it he explores the concept and history of museums of contemporary art, and the shifting ways in which they have been imagined and presented. Following an introduction that sets out the historiography and considering questions of terminology, the first part of the book then examines the paradigm of the Musée des Artistes Vivants in Paris and its equivalents in the rest of Europe during the nineteenth century. The second part takes the story forward from 1930 to the present, presenting New York's Museum of Modern Art as a new universal role model that found emulators or 'contramodels' in the rest of the Western world during the twentieth century. An epilogue, reviews recent museum developments in the last decades. Through its adoption of a long-term, worldwide perspective, the book not only provides a narrative of the development of museums of contemporary art, but also sets this into its international perspective. By assessing the extent to which the great museum-capitals - Paris, London and New York in particular - created their own models of museum provision, as well as acknowledging the influence of such models elsewhere, the book uncovers fascinating perspectives on the practice of museum provision, and reveals how present cultural planning initiatives have often been shaped by historical uses.

Book Synopsis Dictionary of Museology by : François Mairesse
Download or read book Dictionary of Museology written by François Mairesse and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-05 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internationally focused Dictionary of Museology reflects the diversity of cultural and disciplinary approaches to theory and practice in the museum field today. The museum world is changing rapidly, and the characteristics and social roles of the world’s approximately 100,000 existing museums are constantly evolving. In addition to their traditional functions of preservation, research and communication, museums are increasingly addressing issues related to social inclusion, human rights, sustainable development and finances, all of which are explored in this dictionary. Drawing on the support of an international editorial committee, including influential figures from the US, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Spain, Germany, France and the UK, this collaborative work produced by over 100 researchers from around the world provides an overview of this unique field by defining over 1,000 terms relating to museology. The Dictionary of Museology is intended for a broad spectrum of museum professionals, academics, researchers and students. The book will be especially useful to those working with international partners, since a common lexicon that conveys the complex reality of current social and cultural values is particularly vital for those working across borders.
Book Synopsis Museums for the 21st Century by : Josep Maria Montaner
Download or read book Museums for the 21st Century written by Josep Maria Montaner and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If since the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century the museum was consolidated as a new public institution, at the beginning of the 21st century it has become a place for the massive influx of an active public and has become integrated into consumer culture in its broadest sense. As a generator of large urban spaces and a magnet for tourists the museum has also contributed to a total mutation of the building type traditional to it. Profusely illustrated with examples of recent museums, this book is organised into eight chapters, each describing one of the eight trends that can be considered the predominant forms of contemporary museums.
Book Synopsis El futuro de los museos by : András Szántó
Download or read book El futuro de los museos written by András Szántó and published by Adriana Hidalgo Editora. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
