Book excerpt: It came to be known as "The Petulant Express." The train's regular journey between New York City and Chicago constantly attracted a passenger list of the rich and famous. And, on this particular journey, they all seemed, by temperament, to be irritated and angry. Petulant himself was a passenger on the noteworthy trek, occupying his plush Presidential Car at the rear of the train. But, last night after a stop in Akron, Ohio, someone made a permanent alteration to the designer's career. For his body was found early this morning in his cabin by a porter delivering his breakfast tray. Still holding a crystal champagne glass and with his solid silver cigarette case in the pocket of his robe, Petulant appeared to have died without a struggle, the victim of an unexpected attack. With a world poised on the brink of war, who would dare trounce a titan of technology, especially one with the foresight and connections of Petulant? And where would the trail lead that would eventually end up at the feet of a killer? Only effective sleuthing and expert investigative skills would dictate the answers.

Download or read book The Kennel Murder Case written by S. S. Van Dine and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by S. S. Van Dine was originally published in 1933 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'The Kennel Murder Case' is one of Van Dine's novels of crime and mystery. S. S. Van Dine was born Willard Huntington Wright in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1888. He attended St. Vincent College, Pomona College and Harvard University, but failed to graduate, leaving to cultivate contacts he had made in the literary world. At the age of twenty-one, Wright began his professional writing career as literary editor of the Los Angeles Times. In 1926, Wright published his first S. S. Van Dine novel, The Benson Murder Case. Wright went on to write eleven more mysteries. The first few books about his upper-class amateur sleuth, Philo Vance, were so popular that Wright became wealthy for the first time in his life. His later books declined in popularity as the reading public's tastes in mystery fiction changed, but during the late twenties and early thirties his work was very successful.
Book Synopsis Profiles from Prison by : Michael G. Santos
Download or read book Profiles from Prison written by Michael G. Santos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an inmate serving 45 years for a drug conviction when he was 23, this is an in-depth view living behind bars from the perspective of prisoners themselves. Sections of the book are based on length of imprisonment. Prisoners in Fort Dix, N.J., detail their unique experiences, thoughts, and feelings about life on the inside. Some describe the actions that lead to their confinement, or detail the complexities of living in all-male communities. Others reveal the ways they cope with their terms, or the expectations they have for life after prison. Santos offers the gripping stories of men serving a variety of terms, providing commentary and analysis as he guides readers through the prison experience. How men adjust to their confinement, and how they utilize their time while serving their sentences, can be a predictor of future success or failure both in prison and society upon their release. Through these often-difficult accounts, readers gain a greater understanding of what it means to be a prisoner, and how the system itself can contribute to both positive adjustment and negative outcomes alike.

Despite numerous indications--including 40 claims of sexual misconduct with minors--pointing to him as Croteau's killer, the Reverend Richard R. Lavigne remains "innocent." Drawing on more than 10,000 pages of police and court records and interviews with Danny's friends and family, fellow abuse victims, and church officials, the author uncovers the truth--church complicity in a cover up and the masking of priests' involvement in a ring of abusive clergy--behind Croteau's death and those who had a hand in it.
