Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October of 2016, Allen Parkman was a charismatic Republican candidate for committeeman in Corville Township, New Jersey. Right in the middle of the campaign season, he was lured to the porch of a house in a run-down section of town, where he was shot and killed. A note was left under the dead body condemning both Allen and Trump. The police were getting nowhere, so the mayor of the township convinced supersleuth Amy Bell to take the case. Amy realized that there were many different motives for various people to kill Allen. His ex-wife and two children were refusing all contact with Allen after she divorced him due to multiple episodes of cheating. A local Democrat politician might have wanted to get rid of the Republicans’ most electable candidate, who might also carry other Republican candidates to victory. A local Republican might have believed that killing Allen and leaving the note would create a big sympathy vote for Republican candidates. Then there were the married women whom Allen had propositioned, as well as their husbands. There were also hundreds of investors who had lost money due to the stock-touting scams perpetrated by Allen’s company. And Allen had two partners in his company who might have had issues with him. Amy was not confident that any of these people would have killed Allen based on those motives. She was also uncomfortable about the note left under the body but couldn’t pinpoint exactly why. Would the beautiful and vivacious detective be able to find the key to solving a case that seemed unsolvable? And if she did succeed, could she produce the evidence to bring the killer or killers to justice? Author David Schwinger, when not writing Amy Bell mysteries—there are now twelve—enjoys composing songs, playing pickleball, and traveling the world with his wife, Sherryl. He first met Sherryl when she was his student in a mathematics class he taught at City College of New York. Their secret romance became the inspiration for his first Amy Bell mystery, The Teacher’s Pet Murders.

Book excerpt: Multimillionaire Ethan Barris sold his Internet startup and now greatly enjoyed teaching computer science to the brightest seniors at Laketown Science Academy, an all-girls school. He also reveled in insulting and humiliating his colleagues on the school faculty who he thought were mediocre losers. Ethan found additional pleasure in having sex with several much younger women while bullying his long-time girlfriend into taking an action she would immediately deeply regret. One morning, while leaving for work, Ethan was stabbed to death on his front porch. The police were making no progress, and super sleuth Amy Bell was hired by Ethan's one friend in the faculty to investigate the killing. Amy soon realized that virtually everybody who knew Ethan strongly disliked him, except for his students who respected and admired him. Who hated Ethan so much that they would kill him on that mid-September morning? Amy found it hard to believe any of her suspects would go that far. But somebody clearly did, and the beautiful and brilliant Amy represented the last best chance to solve the case. Book excerpt: Jesse Jackson is a modern day highway robber, says veteran investigative reporter Kenneth R. Timmerman, who uses cries of racism to steal from individuals, corporations, and government, to give to himself. Until now, however, no one has been brave enough to say it and diligent enough to prove it. But Ken Timmerman has cracked Jackson's machine, found Jackson cronies willing to break ranks, and uncovered a sordid tale of greed, ambition, and corruption from a self-proclaimed minister who has no qualms about poisoning American race relations for personal gain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical study examines a “legal lynching” in 1902 Texas, shedding light on race relations, political culture, and economic conditions of the time. On October 17, 1902, in Nacogdoches, Texas, a black man named James Buchanan was tried without representation, condemned, and executed for the murder of a white family—all within three hours. Two white men played pivotal roles in these events: the editor of the Nacogdoches Sentinel, Bill Haltom, a prominent Democrat who condemned lynching but defended lynch mobs; and A. J. Spradley, a Populist sheriff who managed to keep the mob from burning Buchanan alive, only to escort him to the gallows. Each man’s story illuminates part of the path toward the terrible parody of justice at the heart of A Hanging in Nacogdoches. The turn of the twentieth century was a time of dramatic change for the people of East Texas. Frightened by the Populist Party's attempts to unite poor blacks and whites in a struggle for economic justice, white Democrats defended their power base by exploiting racial tensions in a battle that ultimately resulted in complete disenfranchisement for the black population. In telling the story of a single lynching, Gary Borders dramatically illustrates the way politics and race combined to bring horrific violence to small southern towns like Nacogdoches.

Book excerpt: Our criminal justice system favors defendants who know how to play the "5K game": criminals who are so savvy about the cooperation process that they repeatedly commit serious crimes knowing they can be sent back to the streets if they simply cooperate with prosecutors. In Snitch, investigative reporter Ethan Brown shows through a compelling series of case profiles how the sentencing guidelines for drug-related offenses, along with the 5K1.1 section, have unintentionally created a "cottage industry of cooperators," and led to fabricated evidence. The result is wrongful convictions and appallingly gruesome crimes, including the grisly murder of the Harvey family in Richmond, Virginia and the well-publicized murder of Imette St. Guillen in New York City. This cooperator-coddling criminal justice system has ignited the infamous "Stop Snitching" movement in urban neighborhoods, deplored by everyone from the NAACP to the mayor of Boston for encouraging witness intimidation. But as Snitch shows, the movement is actually a cry against the harsh sentencing guidelines for drug-related crimes, and a call for hustlers to return to "old school" street values, like: do the crime, do the time. Combining deep knowledge of the criminal justice system with frontline true crime reporting, Snitch is a shocking and brutally troubling report about the state of American justice when it's no longer clear who are the good guys and who are the bad.

Along the way, the narrative highlights a number of issues impacting the death penalty process, many of which are still relevant in the modern era of capital punishment in the United States ... Moreover, the case in question illustrates a range of themes prevalent in post-Progressive Georgia and brings them together to create a broader narrative. Thus, issues of race, class, and gender emerge from what was supposed to be a neutral process; ... demonstrates that capital punishment cannot be administered in an untainted fashion, but its finality demands that it must be"--From Athenaeum@UGA website.

On the campaign trail, Jack is supported by his doting mother and his loving wife, who is pregnant, with their first child. Jack is handsome, well liked, and comes from a wealthy family. Jack seems to have acquired the American dream and is destined to shortly assume the reigns of the Presidency. In the middle of the night, Jack jerks awake, frightened by a recurring nightmare. When Jack was 12, he was sexually assaulted by an illegal alien, Raul. Raul warned Jack that if he told anyone, then Raul would brutally kill his father. Jack told his father and, while an unbelieving judge released him, Raul was sent back to Mexico. A few months later, Jack's father was killed in a tragic car accident, in Mexico. After making a brief appearance in Arizona, Jack continues his whirlwind campaign trail, as Arizona Detectives Sean and Eva begin investigating six bizarre murders, where the victims are all illegal immigrants, who were sexually assaulted and then brutally killed. The killer, leaving no evidence behind, is nicknamed the Arizona Shadow. Every city where Jack stops, giving his stirring campaign speech, murders of illegal immigrants occur, but the police dismiss the murders as the work of a serial killer. As the campaign draws to an end, Jack returns to Arizona on a final campaign leg. After giving a speech, which will ensure Jack's victory, he accidentally runs into Raul. After talking about old times and Raul admitting that he killed Jack's father, Jack kills Raul. As Jack is being inaugurated as the President of the United States, Arizona detectives Sean and Eva discover the link to the killings of the illegal immigrants; it is Jack.
