Book excerpt: This program modeled pilot spatial disorientation illusions as part of a real-time illusion detection and aiding system. The models and detection algorithms focus on human vestibular responses to aircraft motion. The aiding portion of the product was part of a comprehensive approach to combating the adverse effects of SD on military and civilian pilots. Four experiments supported the detection and aiding calculations. Two focused on creating vestibular illusions and quantifying pilot perception of those illusions for the models. The other two experiments focused on the aiding portion of the system and tested an innovative visual cue as well as the efficacy of voice and tactile commands for recovering for unusual attitudes. The vestibular models formed the foundation of a tool for post hoc flight data analysis from SD mishaps. Twelve total data sets were analyzed to help fine-tune the tool. The program was very successful.

Its cost to the US military is over $300 million per year, with comparable costs to US civil aviation. Despite significantly increased research over the past decade, the rate of accidents caused by SD has not decreased. While the most recent research emphases have been on understanding the physiology of SD, the translation of the new knowledge into tools (e.g., training, displays, automation) that help pilots avoid SD and minimize its effects if it does occur, has not occurred. The goals of the research reported here were to apply multisensory countermeasures to SD based on human sensory models and the pilot's workload. It is the premise of this Phase I effort that more effective multisensory countermeasures, applied in an intelligent fashion, are needed and possible, and that modeling and simulation are the most cost effective means to identity and test countermeasures for different aircraft under varying conditions.

Book excerpt: The Air Force regards Spatial Disorientation (SD) and loss of situational awareness (SA) as contributing factors in operational Class A ($1 M in aircraft loss and/or pilot fatality) aircraft mishaps. Multisensory systems have been developed to enhance the aircraft altitude information to the pilot. The systems incorporate multisensory aids including helmet-mounted symbology and tactile and audio cues. Two systems have been prototyped and demonstrated in the Air Force Research Laboratory. The technology could have application in the rotary-wing brownout program. This paper discusses the development of two systems and a potential application including an augmented cognition application. Unlike automatic ground collision avoidance systems, these systems do not take over the aircraft if a pre-set altitude is broached by the pilot; rather, these multisensory systems provide complementary attitude cues to the pilot via the tactile, audio. and visual systems that allow the pilot to continue flying through disorienting conditions.

The model predicts that circular vection should have two dynamic components, and the recent finding of Tokumaru et al (1998) that visual cues influence somatogravic illusion in ways not accounted for by the Borah model. The model also correctly predicts both the direction of Coriolis illusion, and the magnitude of the resulting tilt illusion. It also predicts that the direction and mechanism of Pseudo-Coriolis illusion is fundamentally different from Coriolis, a prediction verified by means of a pilot experiment. Finally, the model accounts for the dynamics of astronaut post-flight tilt-gain and OTTR vertigos in ways not explained by previous static analyses (e.g. Merfeld, 2003). During the ten-year period of 1990-1999, the USAF experienced 36 SD-related Class A mishaps costing a total of $557M and the loss of 44 aircrew. SD is the single most common cause of human-related aircraft accidents. The causes of SD are complex and require an understanding of the types of SD, the physiology and psychology of flight, and the way pilots train for the prevention of SD. Research has shown there are three distinct types of SD unrecognized, recognized and incapacitating. Each type impacts the pilot in a different way, and each should be thoroughly understood by the pilot before he or she experiences them in flight. Results from a study of the Post-Roll Illusion (Type I), the Graveyard Spin Illusion (Type II), and a report from a pilot who experienced the Giant Hand Illusion (Type III) is presented. Spatial orientation training techniques are included. Finally, the USAF's Spatial Disorientation Countermeasures Program, designed to reduce the number of SD mishaps, is also presented. This program emphasizes shared knowledge across all flying communities, including research in the areas of attitude awareness (visual and vestibular), multi-sensory integration (3-D audio and tactile stimulation), and both ground-based training and flight- based demonstrations. Although the phenomenon of spatial disorientation (SD) has been described and documented by many, both researcher and aircrew, since the earliest days of aviation, a complete understanding of the complex mechanisms and interactions has remained elusive. The economic consequences alone of SD are enormous, both in cost of lost aircraft and cost of training new aircrew. This paper will provide examples of different types of SD, the interrelationship of SD to loss of situational awareness (LSA), and a brief summary of the US Air Force Research Laboratory's current SD Countermeasures program.
