Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although computational modeling and simulation of material deformation was initiated with the study of structurally simple materials and inert environments, there is an increasing demand for predictive simulation of more realistic material structure and physical conditions. In particular, it is recognized that applied mechanical force can plausibly alter chemical reactions inside materials or at material interfaces, though the fundamental reasons for this chemomechanical coupling are studied in a material-speci c manner. Atomistic-level s- ulations can provide insight into the unit processes that facilitate kinetic reactions within complex materials, but the typical nanosecond timescales of such simulations are in contrast to the second-scale to hour-scale timescales of experimentally accessible or technologically relevant timescales. Further, in complex materials these key unit processes are “rare events” due to the high energy barriers associated with those processes. Examples of such rare events include unbinding between two proteins that tether biological cells to extracellular materials [1], unfolding of complex polymers, stiffness and bond breaking in amorphous glass bers and gels [2], and diffusive hops of point defects within crystalline alloys [3].
Book Synopsis Modeling Materials by : Ellad B. Tadmor
Download or read book Modeling Materials written by Ellad B. Tadmor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material properties emerge from phenomena on scales ranging from Angstroms to millimeters, and only a multiscale treatment can provide a complete understanding. Materials researchers must therefore understand fundamental concepts and techniques from different fields, and these are presented in a comprehensive and integrated fashion for the first time in this book. Incorporating continuum mechanics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, atomistic simulations and multiscale techniques, the book explains many of the key theoretical ideas behind multiscale modeling. Classical topics are blended with new techniques to demonstrate the connections between different fields and highlight current research trends. Example applications drawn from modern research on the thermo-mechanical properties of crystalline solids are used as a unifying focus throughout the text. Together with its companion book, Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics (Cambridge University Press, 2011), this work presents the complete fundamentals of materials modeling for graduate students and researchers in physics, materials science, chemistry and engineering.

Book excerpt: Focuses entirely on demystifying the field and subject of ICME and provides step-by-step guidance on its industrial application via case studies This highly-anticipated follow-up to Mark F. Horstemeyer’s pedagogical book on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) concepts includes engineering practice case studies related to the analysis, design, and use of structural metal alloys. A welcome supplement to the first book—which includes the theory and methods required for teaching the subject in the classroom—Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) For Metals: Concepts and Case Studies focuses on engineering applications that have occurred in industries demonstrating the ICME methodologies, and aims to catalyze industrial diffusion of ICME technologies throughout the world. The recent confluence of smaller desktop computers with enhanced computing power coupled with the emergence of physically-based material models has created the clear trend for modeling and simulation in product design, which helped create a need to integrate more knowledge into materials processing and product performance. Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) For Metals: Case Studies educates those seeking that knowledge with chapters covering: Body Centered Cubic Materials; Designing An Interatomic Potential For Fe-C Alloys; Phase-Field Crystal Modeling; Simulating Dislocation Plasticity in BCC Metals by Integrating Fundamental Concepts with Macroscale Models; Steel Powder Metal Modeling; Hexagonal Close Packed Materials; Multiscale Modeling of Pure Nickel; Predicting Constitutive Equations for Materials Design; and more. Presents case studies that connect modeling and simulation for different materials' processing methods for metal alloys Demonstrates several practical engineering problems to encourage industry to employ ICME ideas Introduces a new simulation-based design paradigm Provides web access to microstructure-sensitive models and experimental database Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) For Metals: Case Studies is a must-have book for researchers and industry professionals aiming to comprehend and employ ICME in the design and development of new materials.

Book Synopsis Classical And Quantum Dynamics In Condensed Phase Simulations: Proceedings Of The International School Of Physics by : Bruce J Berne
Download or read book Classical And Quantum Dynamics In Condensed Phase Simulations: Proceedings Of The International School Of Physics written by Bruce J Berne and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-06-17 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The school held at Villa Marigola, Lerici, Italy, in July 1997 was very much an educational experiment aimed not just at teaching a new generation of students the latest developments in computer simulation methods and theory, but also at bringing together researchers from the condensed matter computer simulation community, the biophysical chemistry community and the quantum dynamics community to confront the shared problem: the development of methods to treat the dynamics of quantum condensed phase systems. This volume collects the lectures delivered there. Due to the focus of the school, the contributions divide along natural lines into two broad groups: (1) the most sophisticated forms of the art of computer simulation, including biased phase space sampling schemes, methods which address the multiplicity of time scales in condensed phase problems, and static equilibrium methods for treating quantum systems; (2) the contributions on quantum dynamics, including methods for mixing quantum and classical dynamics in condensed phase simulations and methods capable of treating all degrees of freedom quantum-mechanically.
