Book excerpt: Much of our understanding of the relationships among geometric struc tures in images is based on the shape of these structures and their relative orientations, positions and sizes. Thus, developing quantitative methods for capturing shape information from digital images is an important area for computer vision research. This book describes the theory, implemen tation, and application of two multi resolution image shape description methods. The author begins by motivating the need for quantitative methods for describing both the spatial and intensity variations of struc tures in grey-scale images. Two new methods which capture this informa tion are then developed. The first, the intensity axis of symmetry, is a collection of branching and bending surfaces which correspond to the skeleton of the image. The second method, multiresolution vertex curves, focuses on surface curvature properties as the image is blurred by a sequence of Gaussian filters. Implementation techniques for these image shape descriptions are described in detail. Surface functionals are mini mized subject to symmetry constraints to obtain the intensity axis of symmetry. Robust numerical methods are developed for calculating and following vertex curves through scale space. Finally, the author demon strates how grey-scale images can be segmented into geometrically coher ent regions using these shape description techniques. Building quantita tive analysis applications in terms of these visually sensible image regions promises to be an exciting area of biomedical computer vision research. v Acknowledgments This book is a corrected and revised version of the author's Ph. D.

Book excerpt: During the period of the grant, 1/15/90 - 1/14/93, we have developed: (1) a coherent multiresolution framework for image analysis tasks, in particular, for estimating 3-D shapes from a single video or SAR image; the algorithm has been applied to constructing topographic maps of Venus' terrain, and to segmentation/classification of textures, (2) efficient procedures for estimating the parameters of Markov Random Fields (MRF's) from noisy and degraded data, (3) a fixed-length noiseless source coding for MRF's using large deviations, and (4) a multi-grid type algorithm for maximum-likelihood estimation in tomography. In addition, we have begun a new non-parametric approach to speech recognition.

Book excerpt: This book results from a Workshop on Multiresolution Image Processing and Analysis, held in Leesburg, VA on July 19-21, 1982. It contains updated ver sions of most of the papers that were presented at the Workshop, as well as new material added by the authors. Four of the presented papers were not available for inclusion in the book: D. Sabbah, A computing with connections approach to visual recognition; R. M. Haralick, Fitting the gray tone intensity surface as a function of neighborhood size; E. M. Riseman, Hierarchical boundary formation; and W. L. Mahaffey, L. S. Davis, and J. K. Aggarwal, Region correspondence in multi-resolution images taken from dynamic scenes. The number and variety of papers indicates the timeliness of the H0rkshop. Multiresolution methods are rapidly gaining recognition as an important theme in image processing and analysis. I would like to express my thanks to the National Science Foundation for their support of the Workshop under Grant MCS-82-05942; to Barbara Hope for organizing and administering the Workshop; to Janet Salzman and Fran Cohen, for retyping the papers; and above all, to the speakers and other partici pants, for making the Workshop possible.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The segmentation of images into regions that have some common property is a fundamental problem in image processing. Traditional approaches to segmentation have been either edge based or region based. It is clear, however, that a multiresolution approach, where image properties are measured at varying scales, is the only way to overcome the inherent uncertainty between the class of a region and its position. A review is presented of both boundary and region based schemes concentrating on multiresolution methods. The results of an investigation into a set of rotation-invariant operators are presented. Taking boundary information as input, these operators can detect features such as corners, and could be employed to provide shape information in a segmentation scheme. A new quad-tree segmentation method is described and some initial results presented."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns (CAIP 2003). This conference - ries started about 18 years ago in Berlin. Initially, the conference served as a forum for meetings between scientists from Western- and Eastern-bloc co- tries. Nowadays, the conference attracts participants from all over the world. The conference gives equal weight to posters and oral presentations, and the selected presentation mode is based on the most appropriate communication medium. The programme follows a single-track format, rather than parallel s- sions. Non-overlapping oral and poster sessions ensure that all attendees have the opportunity to interact personally with presenters. As for the numbers, we received a total of 160 submissions. All papers were reviewed by two to three members of the Programme Committee. The ?nal - lection was carried out by the Conference Chairs. Out of the 160 papers, 42 were selected for oral presentation and 52 as posters. At this point, we wish to thank the Programme Committee and additional referees for their timely and high-quality reviews. The paper submission and review procedure was carried out electronically. We thank Marcin Morg ́ os from Scalar–IT Solutions for p- viding us with the Web-based participant registration system. We also thank the invited speakers Nicholas Ayache, John Daugman, and Dariu Gavrila, for kindly accepting our invitation.

Book excerpt: Many approaches have been proposed to solve the problem of finding the optic flow field of an image sequence. Three major classes of optic flow computation techniques can discriminated (see for a good overview Beauchemin and Barron IBeauchemin19951): gradient based (or differential) methods; phase based (or frequency domain) methods; correlation based (or area) methods; feature point (or sparse data) tracking methods; In this chapter we compute the optic flow as a dense optic flow field with a multi scale differential method. The method, originally proposed by Florack and Nielsen [Florack1998a] is known as the Multiscale Optic Flow Constrain Equation (MOFCE). This is a scale space version of the well known computer vision implementation of the optic flow constraint equation, as originally proposed by Horn and Schunck [Horn1981]. This scale space variation, as usual, consists of the introduction of the aperture of the observation in the process. The application to stereo has been described by Maas et al. [Maas 1995a, Maas 1996a]. Of course, difficulties arise when structure emerges or disappears, such as with occlusion, cloud formation etc. Then knowledge is needed about the processes and objects involved. In this chapter we focus on the scale space approach to the local measurement of optic flow, as we may expect the visual front end to do. 17. 2 Motion detection with pairs of receptive fields As a biologically motivated start, we begin with discussing some neurophysiological findings in the visual system with respect to motion detection.
