Book Synopsis Algorithms Unplugged by : Berthold Vöcking
Download or read book Algorithms Unplugged written by Berthold Vöcking and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-10 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms specify the way computers process information and how they execute tasks. Many recent technological innovations and achievements rely on algorithmic ideas – they facilitate new applications in science, medicine, production, logistics, traffic, communi¬cation and entertainment. Efficient algorithms not only enable your personal computer to execute the newest generation of games with features unimaginable only a few years ago, they are also key to several recent scientific breakthroughs – for example, the sequencing of the human genome would not have been possible without the invention of new algorithmic ideas that speed up computations by several orders of magnitude. The greatest improvements in the area of algorithms rely on beautiful ideas for tackling computational tasks more efficiently. The problems solved are not restricted to arithmetic tasks in a narrow sense but often relate to exciting questions of nonmathematical flavor, such as: How can I find the exit out of a maze? How can I partition a treasure map so that the treasure can only be found if all parts of the map are recombined? How should I plan my trip to minimize cost? Solving these challenging problems requires logical reasoning, geometric and combinatorial imagination, and, last but not least, creativity – the skills needed for the design and analysis of algorithms. In this book we present some of the most beautiful algorithmic ideas in 41 articles written in colloquial, nontechnical language. Most of the articles arose out of an initiative among German-language universities to communicate the fascination of algorithms and computer science to high-school students. The book can be understood without any prior knowledge of algorithms and computing, and it will be an enlightening and fun read for students and interested adults.

Children spend an average of 7.5 hours on digital devices every day with profoundly negative consequences. While some tech may "amplify" real-life experience, the vast majority undermines it by limiting physical activity, creating anxiety, or damaging self-esteem. Childhood Unplugged takes a bold approach to creating healthy boundaries around the use of digital media. Drawing on her own family's experience, plus interviews with digital minimalists, educators, and child development experts, Katherine Martinko presents: Meticulously researched analysis of the impacts of excessive screen time on children's physical, neurological, emotional, and social development Specific pathways to reduced screen exposure, naturally leading to more time spent outdoors, increased confidence and empathy, and more creative and active play Inspiration for caregivers overwhelmed by the thought of severing ties with the digital babysitter Age-appropriate advice for parents of babies and toddlers, school-aged children, and adolescents. Taking a calming, nonjudgmental approach, Childhood Unplugged is a lifeline for parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone who questions the role of digital media and yearns for the young people in their life to experience the profound beauty and magic of childhood.

Download or read book Jesus Unplugged written by Bert Gary and published by FaithWalk Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much emphasis in the church today'by laity and clergy'on being respectable, nice and presentable. Yes where in scripture did Jesus say that we should make being well-dressed and well-behaved priorities? Is the church guilty of reducing Christianity to mere social etiquette? The Jesus of scripture rejected these priorities with word and deed. This book goes back to the original passages in the Gospels that reveal not a cautious, image-conscious Jesus, but a provaocative, politically incorrect cage-rattler for whom appearance and reputation meant nothing. It examines the original Gospel passages that are regularly avoided or sanitized by pastors, teachers and writers exploring those times when Jesus said no and when he disturbed the peace. There are profound implications in understanding that the Jesus of the Bible is no passive pushover, but a vigorous truth warrior who slays falsehoods with a sharp, double-edged sword. Jesus Unplugged is provocative and accurate.

Book Synopsis idea journal: interior technicity: unplugged and/or switched on by : Julieanna Preston
Download or read book idea journal: interior technicity: unplugged and/or switched on written by Julieanna Preston and published by AADR – Art Architecture Design Research. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interior Technicity: Unplugged and/ or Switched On invites reflection on how interiors have always been augmenting entities and how they continue to be so—in other words, extending, facilitating and consolidating bodies within socio-cultural environments. Rather than seeing an interior as an 'inside' in opposition to a world beyond, it asks what modes of 'folding inward' have equipped and enabled the spatial environment? Technicity—the world of tools and technical objects that extend and mediate memory, as Bernard Steigler (1998) describes it—has never been what inside-ness, in its sheltering of life, keeps at bay; mediation is from the start technical, indexed to inscribing practices rich in temporal and embodied implications. By this reading, interiors have always been augmented and augmenting (in the sense of the Latin"augmentare": to increase, enlarge, or enrich). This IDEA Journal issue considers this mode of 'folding inward' as a condition of an interior'sspecificity. Whether it be a small structure such as a tramping hut or a tiny house, a large complex interior environment such as an airport or shopping mall, handmade with local materials such as Samoan fale, or the result of manufacturing processes assembling artificial and prefabricated elements as in the case of a spacecraft, boat or train, interiors are augmented, mediated, generated or embellished by technologies. The effect of these technologies is not neutral; one's experience of an interior is significantly influenced by the affective resonance of its technologies.

Tesla’s inventions were complete down to dimensions and part sizes in his visionary process. Tesla would envision his electromagnetic devices as he stared into the sky, or into a corner of his laboratory. His inventions on rotating magnetic fields creating AC current as we know it today, have changed the world—yet most people have never heard of this great inventor Is he a suppressed inventor, as many historians contend? Many of Tesla’s concepts and inventions are still thought of as science fiction today—over 60 years later! Includes: Tesla’s fantastic vision of the future, his wireless transmission of power, Tesla’s Magnifying Transmitter, the testing and building of his towers for wireless power, tons more. The genius of Nikola Tesla is being realized by millions all over the world!

Book Synopsis A Student's Guide Through the Great Physics Texts by : Kerry Kuehn
Download or read book A Student's Guide Through the Great Physics Texts written by Kerry Kuehn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a chronological introduction to the science of motion and rest based on the reading and analysis of significant portions of Galileo’s Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences, Pascal’s Treatise on the Equilibrium of Fluids and the Weight of the Mass of Air, Newton’s Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, and Einstein’s Relativity. Each chapter begins with a short introduction followed by a reading selection. Carefully crafted study questions draw out key points in the text and focus the reader’s attention on the author’s methods, analysis, and conclusions. Numerical and laboratory exercises at the end of each chapter test the reader’s ability to understand and apply key concepts from the text. Space, Time and Motion is the second of four volumes in A Student’s Guide through the Great Physics Texts. This book grew out of a four-semester undergraduate physics curriculum designed to encourage a critical and circumspect approach to natural science, while at the same time preparing students for advanced coursework in physics. This book is particularly suitable as a college-level textbook for students of the natural sciences, history or philosophy. It also serves as a textbook for advanced high-school students, or as a thematically-organized source-book for scholars and motivated lay-readers. In studying the classic scientific texts included herein, the reader will be drawn toward a lifetime of contemplation.
