In addition to the expected activity on the primary slip system, the results show appreciable activity perpendicular to the primary system. The magnitude of the activity orthogonal to the primary varies from being equal to the primary for the as-fabricated samples to 1/5 of the primary in the samples annealed after fabrication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work reported here is part of a 'multiscale characterization' study intended to clarify the deformation pattern in a Cu single crystal deformed in compression. A copper single crystal was oriented for single slip in the (111)[{bar 1}01] slip system and tested to ≈10% strain in uniaxial compression, using a specifically designed '6 degree of freedom' compressive test device to achieve uniaxial strain. The macroscopic strain field was monitored during the test by optical 'image correlation' methods that mapped the strain field with a spatial resolution of about 100 [mu]m. The strain field was measured on orthogonal surfaces, one of which (the x-face) was oriented perpendicular to [1{bar 2}1] and contained the [{bar 1}01] direction of the preferred slip system. The macroscopic strain produced is an inhomogeneous pattern of broad, crossed shear bands in the x-face. One, the primary band, lay parallel to (111). The second, the 'conjugate' band, was oriented perpendicular to (111) and contains no common slip plane of the fcc crystal. The mesoscopic structure of the inhomogeneous macroscopic deformation pattern was explored with selected area diffraction, using a focused synchrotron radiation polychromatic beam with a resolution of 1-3 [mu]m. Areas within the primary, conjugate and primary + conjugate strain regions of the x-face were identified and mapped for their orientation, excess defect density and shear stress. The mesoscopic defect structure consisted of broad, somewhat irregular primary bands that lay nominally parallel to (111) in a almost periodic distribution with a period of about 30 [mu]m. These primary bands were dominant even in the region of conjugate strain. There were also broad conjugate defect bands, almost precisely perpendicular to the primary bands that tended to bridge primary bands and terminate at them. The residual shear stresses were large (ranging to well above 500 MPa) and strongly correlated with the primary shear bands. The results are compared to the mesoscopic defect patterns found in Cu in etch pit studies done some decades ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study is described of the strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress of Cu single crystals in all stages of deformation and over a wide temperature range. The curves relating the increase in flow stress on increasing the strain-rate by a fixed amount to the flow stress are generally divisible into three regions a, b and c. Region a is linear and characteristic of easy glide. At the end of this region the rate of stress increase with strain increases, and a transition region, b, occurs in which the stress increase varies with flow stress much more slowly than in easy glide. Another linear region, c, of the stress increase versus flow stress, of intermediate slope, begins during stage II and is characteristic of the latter part of stage II and of stage III of the work-hardening curves. The lower the test temperature, the greater is the range in stage II in which the linear region c applies. There is no change in the curves of the stress increase versus flow stress at the onset of stage III. The slope of region c is similar for crystals deforming by single or double slip, and is of the same order of magnitude as that for polycrystals. The results agree with those of previous workers in that the temperature dependence of the flow stress is greater during easy glide than in stages II and III. The two linear regions, a and c, are thought to correspond to two different arrangements of dislocations, the transition from one type of arrangement to the other taking place in region b. (Author).

Book excerpt: Deviations from single glide during the deformation of Cu single crystals have been detected by following the orientation of the tensile axis using x-ray techniques. The deviations for room temperature deformation of some crystals can be explained if it is assumed that 5-10% of the elongation is produced by slip on the secondary systems and the remainder on the primary system. The deviations from single glide are much smaller in alpha-brass crystals which also show more overshoot, so that secondary slip is inhibited. It is suggested that secondary slip is produced near the heads of piled-up groups of primary dislocations at the ends of newly formed slip lines where the resolved shear stress on the secondary systems is high. Secondary slip is thus very localized, producing little strain, but it can give rise to a high forest density.

The result of 5 years of investigation from researchers around the world New data from a range of new techniques, including synchrotron radiation X-ray topography provide safer and surer methods of identifying deformation mechanisms Informing the future direction of research in intermediate and high temperature processes by providing original treatment of dislocation climb DESCRIPTION: Thermally Activated Mechanisms in Crystal Plasticity is a unified, quantitative and fundamental resource for material scientists investigating the strength of metallic materials of various structures at extreme temperatures. Crystal plasticity is usually controlled by a limited number of elementary dislocation mechanisms, even in complex structures. Those which determine dislocation mobility and how it changes under the influence of stress and temperature are of key importance for understanding and predicting the strength of materials. The authors describe in a consistent way a variety of thermally activated microscopic mechanisms of dislocation mobility in a range of crystals. The principles of the mechanisms and equations of dislocation motion are revisited and new ones are proposed. These describe mostly friction forces on dislocations such as the lattice resistance to glide or those due to sessile cores, as well as dislocation cross-slip and climb. They are critically assessed by comparison with the best available experimental results of microstructural characterization, in situ straining experiments under an electron or a synchrotron beam, as well as accurate transient mechanical tests such as stress relaxation experiments. Some recent attempts at atomistic modeling of dislocation cores under stress and temperature are also considered since they offer a complementary description of core transformations and associated energy barriers. In addition to offering guidance and assistance for further experimentation, the book indicates new ways to extend the body of data in particular areas such as lattice resistance to glide.

Book excerpt: Dislocation Based Crystal Plasticity: Theory and Computation at Micron and Submicron Scale provides a comprehensive introduction to the continuum and discreteness dislocation mechanism-based theories and computational methods of crystal plasticity at the micron and submicron scale. Sections cover the fundamental concept of conventional crystal plasticity theory at the macro-scale without size effect, strain gradient crystal plasticity theory based on Taylar law dislocation, mechanism at the mesoscale, phase-field theory of crystal plasticity, computation at the submicron scale, including single crystal plasticity theory, and the discrete-continuous model of crystal plasticity with three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics coupling finite element method (DDD-FEM). Three kinds of plastic deformation mechanisms for submicron pillars are systematically presented. Further sections discuss dislocation nucleation and starvation at high strain rate and temperature effect for dislocation annihilation mechanism. Covers dislocation mechanism-based crystal plasticity theory and computation at the micron and submicron scale Presents crystal plasticity theory without size effect Deals with the 3D discrete-continuous (3D DCM) theoretic and computational model of crystal plasticity with 3D discrete dislocation dynamics (3D DDD) coupling finite element method (FEM) Includes discrete dislocation mechanism-based theory and computation at the submicron scale with single arm source, coating micropillar, lower cyclic loading pillars, and dislocation starvation at the submicron scale
