Book excerpt: The theory and practice of decision making involves infinite or finite number of actions. The decision rules with a finite number of elements in the action space are the so-called multiple decision procedures. Several approaches to problems of multi ple decisions have been developed; in particular, the last decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth of this field. An important aspect of the recent contributions is the attempt by several authors to formalize these problems more in the framework of general decision theory. In this work, we have applied general decision theory to develop some modified principles which are reasonable for problems in this field. Our comments and contributions have been written in a positive spirt and, hopefully, these will an impact on the future direction of research in this field. Using the various viewpoints and frameworks, we have emphasized recent developments in the theory of selection and ranking ~Ihich, in our opinion, provides one of the main tools in this field. The growth of the theory of selection and ranking has kept apace with great vigor as is evidenced by the publication of two recent books, one by Gibbons, Olkin and Sobel (1977), and the other by Gupta and Panchapakesan (1979). An earlier monograph by Bechhofer, Kiefer and Sobel (1968) had also provided some very interest ing work in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider k populations Pi sub 1, Pi sub 2, ..., Pi sub k where each Pi sub i has an observable random variable which depends on some parameter theta sub i. The problem then is to define sequential multiple decision procedures, which select a subset Pi sub 1, Pi sub 2, ..., Pi sub k such that the population with the largest (or smallest) mean is included with a prescribed probability P*. Two types of procedures are considered. The first is a non-eliminating type which takes observations from each population at each stage until a decision (to select or reject) has been made about all the populations. The second, an eliminating type, stops sampling from a population when a decision has been reached about that population. The first two chapters deal with normal populations when the parameters in question are the means. The last chapter offers some generalizations of the procedure and some related problems. (Author).

Book excerpt: The problem of choosing the largest of n means is considered as a multiple decision problem which is generated from n component two-decision problems. With additive losses Bayes rules for the component problems yield Bayes rules for the multiple decision problem. Some properties of these Bayes rules are found. Also a co servativenear-Bayes rule is presented with tabled values for any number of means. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper is concerned with the multiple decision (selection and ranking) problem for k independent normal populations having unknown means and a known common variance. A class of sequential and multi-stage procedures is defined and investigated. This class consists of rules of a noneliminating type; a rule belonging to this class selects and rejects populations at various stages but continues taking samples from all populations until the procedure terminates.
