Book excerpt: WHEN in the future historians examine the second half of the twentieth century, they will no doubt identify the accelerated inter-nationalization of production as a landmark comparable with the Industrial Revolution. In this process multinational enterprises have been leading actors in the past twenty-five years and are certain to continue to be so in the next quarter-century. In 1975 the sales of the Western multinational corporations represented one-fifth of the Gross National Product of all capitalist countries. If their growth is maintained at the same rate as over the period 195o-75, by the end of the century this share will be nearly one-half and the whole capitalist economy may very well be dominated by some 200 giant corporations of which three-quarters may be American-based.

Book excerpt: Partners in East-West Economic Relations: The Determinants of Choice covers the proceedings of an international conference of the same name held at Montebello, Quebec on April 26-29, 1978. This conference brings together various professionals to address contemporary international economic relations issues. One of the three major issues tackled in this compilation is the reintegration of the economics of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe into the international division of labor. This compendium also studies the determinants of the choice of partners in East-West relations at the national and subnational levels. The last major topic concerned in this selection is the similarities and differences between partnerships in the East-West and North-South contexts. This compendium will be of interest to those interested in economics and related disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the political and ideological atmospheres in Central and Eastern Europe have recently changed and entered a transition period, a need has arisen for new models for the formation, development, and establishment of East-West business relationships. East-West Business Relationships is a dynamic work offering a two-dimensional sample--of both the companies and their countries--of East-West Business relations. The book covers topics including joint ventures, relationship marketing, networks, and export behavior. It offers new insights into East-West business relations by: basing its contents upon research conducted by teams from the Unites States, Japan, Sweden, and Finland which allows comparisons between multinationals of different origins. providing a testing ground for new ways of doing business, adjusted to the environments of individual countries. increasing knowledge of critical issues in the business relationship from both the Western and Eastern partner's viewpoint. focusing on the formation and development of East-West business relationships specifically during the transition period. Most chapters in East-West Business Relationships apply a qualitative approach using case study methods. This methodology is unique in the present context of East-West business as it allows an examination of the whole management process of the formation and development of business relationships, providing a rich, in-depth analysis of the why’s and how’s of these relationships. It suggests that more understanding of the experiences, perceptions, and attitudes of East European firms must be gained in order to diminish the problems, a huge number of which are simply a result of the misunderstanding of the Eastern counterpart, faced by Western firms in Eastern Europe. This volume serves as a superior reference for academics and business managers interested in advancing their understanding of East-West business relations. It may also serve as valuable reading material for advanced courses in international marketing or business operations in Eastern Europe.

Book excerpt: This study investigated whether known economic and international business theories available in the literature are meaningful enough to explain the nature, existence and role of multinational companies (MNCs) in the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia. Two sets of questionnaires were distributed in major cities of Saudi Arabia -- one set for 100 multinational managers and another for 280 multinational customers. 234 questionnaires were collected -- 45 from multinational managers and 189 from customers. This represents a total response rate of 62 percent, which is adequate for this study. The empirical results, supported with comprehensive secondary data, confirmed virtually all of the research hypotheses. The study found that joint ventures are the dominant form of multinational business in Saudi Arabia, both in manufacturing and service industries. The core roles of MNCs in the Saudi-foreign ventures are evident in the cross-border value-adding activities of marketing, trading, manufacturing, consulting, contracting, project management, insurance, hotel operation and banking. Likewise, MNCs provide licensing, franchising, financing services and various auxiliary roles in the Kingdom. Therefore, the multinationality of a firm or a group of firms operating across national boundaries is not necessarily synonymous with international production -- the main subject of contemporary multinational theories. The respondents generally perceived the competitiveness of MNCs operating in Saudi Arabia as a function of a number of economic, management, marketing, technological and other variables. They also perceived the contributions of MNCs to the KingdomÍs socio-economic developments as significant and positive. The study also found that understanding Islamic values and ethics is important for MNCs. In this regard, the researcher looked at some objective indicators of business success and related them to selected measures of MNCsÍ local cultural awareness and responsiveness. The results indicate that the business success of multinationals operating in Saudi Arabia is positively related to their local cultural awareness and responsiveness. Along this line, this study covers some vital elements of Islamic culture, which will help MNCs understand further the cultural needs, values and sensitivities of the Saudi people and Muslims in general.

Book excerpt: This book is based on an international conference at the University of Tokyo on CoCom and its related export control system'. Despite the changes in the overall political climate, such as the new thinking' in Soviet foreign policy, it seems that CoCom will continue to function for some years. Although the scope of control has been narrowed, the control itself has been tightened. All the old problems which caused conflicts within and outside CoCom still exist. The United States is still exercising export controls in an extra-territorial way via its extensive re-export control system. The 1988 Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act remains unaltered, notwithstanding its controversial nature. This book is a major contribution to the discussion of current legal and political issues concerning export controls, a discussion which has gained greatly in importance as a result of the Gulf crisis.

Book excerpt: Comecon, or the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, was founded by Joseph Stalin in 1949 to counteract the Marshall Plan and reinforce the bonds between the Soviet Union and the "people's democracies" of Eastern Europe. Other Soviet Bloc nations later joined "Comecon, "and for forty years it dominated the trade policies of the Soviet Bloc and profoundly influenced their domestic economic development and relations with the West. "Comecon "collapsed in 1991 after the countries of Eastern Europe rejected communism. It was often compared with the (West European) Common Market, but differed vastly in its aims, structure, powers, and activities. Its influence is a critical factor in assessing both the economic failures of the Soviet Bloc and the problems facing former member states as they make the transition to free-market economies. This detailed, annotated bibliography is an essential guide to the extensive English-language literature about "Comecon "from its founding until its demise. Chapters cover "Comecon's "history, structure, and law; socialist economic integration; the organization's arrangements for international trade and finance; environment, natural resources, and energy; labor; industry and agriculture; science and technology. "Comecon, "like the rest of the Soviet Bloc, collapsed suddenly, but its legacy will color international relations and worldwide economic issues for years to come. An understanding of its institutions, mechanisms, and policies remains vital hi appreciating the economic organization of the former Soviet empire. This bibliography will therefore be indispensable to policymakers, economists, historians, and political scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, in the deteriorating climate of East-West relations technology transfer became vitally important. The Eastern bloc desperately needed Western technology to assist in the development of the socialist economies, but a proposed US ban on the export of Western technology to the Siberian pipeline project led to increasing tension within the Western alliance abot the nature and scale of high technology that could be safely exported to the East. This book reviews the state of technology transfer to the East in the 1980s and considers the place of Western technology in the Eastern economies. It also discusses the strategic goals of Western technology embargoes. Many of the issues discussed remain pertinent today.
