The Task Force concluded that MDBs are still useful but need to incorporate a host of recommendations on changing access to and use of resources, the flexibility and scale of operations, self evaluation, and accepting new approaches to U.S. financial backing. Book Synopsis Mobilization Effects of Multilateral Development Banks by : Chiara Broccolini
Download or read book Mobilization Effects of Multilateral Development Banks written by Chiara Broccolini and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use loan-level data on syndicated lending to a large sample of developing countries between 1993 and 2017 to estimate the mobilization effects of multilateral development banks (MDBs), controlling for a large set of fixed effects. We find evidence of positive and significant direct and indirect mobilization effects of multilateral lending on the number of deals and on the total size of bank inflows. The number of lending banks and the average maturity of syndicated loans also increase after MDB lending. These effects are present not only on impact, but they last up to three years and are not offset by a decline in bond financing. There is no evidence of anticipation effects and the results are not driven by confounding factors, such as the presence of large global banks, Chinese lending and aid flows. Finally, the economic effects are sizable, suggesting that MBDs can play a vital role to mobilize private sector financing to achieve the goals of the 2030 Development Agenda.

Book Synopsis The Dual Nature of Multilateral Development Banks by : Laura Francesca Peitz
Download or read book The Dual Nature of Multilateral Development Banks written by Laura Francesca Peitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element offers a novel, highly relevant perspective towards Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), which are development and financial organizations at the same time. Based on the elaborate institutional logics perspective borrowed from organizational sociology, it uncovers the complex trade-offs between financial and development pressures faced by MDBs and explains variation in organizational responses thereto across types of MDBs. The argument is tested with an original dataset using Data Envelopment Analysis to explain variation in response patterns across MDBs. The analysis shows that lending to the private sector as well as being predominantly owned by borrowing members increase MDBs' emphasis on the financial at the expense of the development nature. Thereby, this Element provides unique insights into MDBs' responses to their dual nature and significantly advances our understanding of MDB lending operations, drawing attention to the complexities involved in the unique MDB business model.
Book Synopsis The Global Architecture of Multilateral Development Banks by : Adrian Robert Bazbauers
Download or read book The Global Architecture of Multilateral Development Banks written by Adrian Robert Bazbauers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the evolution of the 30 functioning multilateral development banks (MDBs). MDBs have their roots in the growing system of international finance and multilateral cooperation, with the first recognisable MDB being proposed by Latin America in financial cooperation with the US in the late 1930s. That Inter-American Bank did not eventuate but was a precursor to the World Bank being negotiated at Bretton Woods in 1944. Since then, a complex network of regional, sub-regional, and specialised development banks has progressively emerged across the globe, including two significant recent entrants established by China and the BRICS. MDBs arrange loans, credits, and guarantees for investment in member states, generally with the stated aim of fostering economic growth. They operate in both the Global North and South, though there are more MDBs focusing on emerging and developing states. While the World Bank and some of the larger regional banks have been scrutinised, little attention has been paid to the smaller banks or the overall system. This book provides the first study of all 30 MDBs and it evaluates their interrelationships. It analyses the emergence of the MDBs in relation to geopolitics, development paradigms and debt. It includes sections on each of the banks as well as on how MDBs have approached the key sectors of infrastructure, human development, and climate. This book will be of particular interest to researchers of development finance, global governance, and international political economy.

Book Synopsis Global Economic Governance and the Development Practices of the Multilateral Development Banks by : Susan Park
Download or read book Global Economic Governance and the Development Practices of the Multilateral Development Banks written by Susan Park and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As pillars of the post-1945 international economic system the Regional and Sub-Regional Development Banks (RSDBs) have long been considered mini-World Banks, reiterating the policy approach of the largest official multilateral development lender in the world. The main objective of the collection is to identify what role the RSDBs play in global economic governance and why. This edited collection draws together cutting edge original research on these understudied institutions. In the burgeoning sub-field of global economic governance as well as the broader study of international organisations (IOs), too often the focus remains on the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Second-order IOs, such as the RSDBs, receive much less attention despite their longevity and regional importance. This volume corrects this oversight by bringing together methodologically diverse research on the RSDBs that interrogates the role and impact of these organisations in global economic governance. The book investigates: the African Development Bank (AfDB); the Asian Development Bank (AsDB); the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and select sub-regional development banks in comparison to the World Bank Group. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of IPE, IR and Development Studies.
