Book excerpt: In this report we present parallel solvers for large linear systems arising from the finite-element discretization of the three-dimensional steady-state groundwater flow problem. Our solvers are based on multigrid and Krylov subspace methods. The parallel implementation is based on a domain decomposition strategy with explicit message passing using NX and MPI libraries. We have tested our parallel implementations on the Intel Paragon XP/S 150 supercomputer using up to 1024 parallel processors and on other parallel platforms such as SGI/Power Challenge Array, Cray/SGI Origin 2000, Convex Exemplar SPP-1200, and IBM SP using up to 64 processors. We show that multigrid can be a scalable algorithm on distributed memory machines. We demonstrate the effectiveness of parallel multigrid based solvers by solving problems requiring more than 70 million nodes in less than a minute. This is more than 25 times faster than the diagonal preconditioned conjugate gradient method which is one of the more popular methods for large sparse linear systems. Our results also show that multigrid as a stand alone solver works best for problems with smooth coefficients, but for rough coefficients it is best used as a preconditioner for a Krylov subspace method such as the conjugate gradient method. We show that even for extremely heterogeneous systems the multigrid pre-conditioned conjugate gradient method is at least 10 times faster than the diagonally preconditioned conjugate gradient method.

Book excerpt: Subsurface flows, occurring in groundwater movement and production of hydrocarbons in the petroleum industry, are affected by the heterogeneity of the medium varying over large scales. In this thesis, we have used state of the art multiscale methods to solve one such flow model, influenced by high contrast permeability field. The focus is on the elliptic pressure equation which is solved on both fine and coarse scale for comparison purposes. Shared memory parallelism has been achieved for generating basis functions, which is computationally the most expensive portion of the multiscale implementation. Parallel systematic spectral enrichment using the GMsFEM (Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method) is the key feature of the current work and has been compared with the MsFEM (Multiscale Finite Element Method). Efficiency of algorithmic implementation has been first tabulated for a two-dimensional finite element code using the MATLAB parallel computing toolbox and also has been given a more generalized form using a three-dimensional finite element code written in OpenMP (Open Multiprocessing) and C++. The timing comparison shows a significant decline in the execution time for the algorithms. It indicates that a higher level of enrichment and desired accuracy is achievable for large scale problems. Computational time gain and fewer memory requirements are two key features achieved in this work. Distributed parallel computing can further be implemented to achieve mass parallelism through which one can solve large problems accurately and efficiently when compared to benchmark fine scale solutions where global system solver, memory requirements and execution time become significant issues.

Book excerpt: A thoughtful consideration of the current level of development of multigrid methods, this volume is a carefully edited collection of papers that addresses its topic on several levels. The first three chapters orient the reader who is familiar with standard numerical techniques to multigrid methods, first by discussing multigrid in the context of standard techniques, second by detailing the mechanics of use of the method, and third by applying the basic method to some current problems in fluid dynamics. The fourth chapter provides a unified development, complete with theory, of algebraic multigrid (AMG), which is a linear equation solver based on multigrid principles. The last chapter is an ambitious development of a very general theory of multigrid methods for variationally posed problems. Included as an appendix is the latest edition of the Multigrid Bibliography, an attempted compilation of all existing research publications on multigrid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed description of a robust pseudomultigrid algorithm for solving (initial-)boundary value problems on structured grids in a black-box manner. To overcome the problem of robustness, the presented Robust Multigrid Technique (RMT) is based on the application of the essential multigrid principle in a single grid algorithm. It results in an extremely simple, very robust and highly parallel solver with close-to-optimal algorithmic complexity and the least number of problem-dependent components. Topics covered include an introduction to the mathematical principles of multigrid methods, a detailed description of RMT, results of convergence analysis and complexity, possible expansion on unstructured grids, numerical experiments and a brief description of multigrid software, parallel RMT and estimations of speed-up and efficiency of the parallel multigrid algorithms, and finally applications of RMT for the numerical solution of the incompressible Navier Stokes equations. Potential readers are graduate students and researchers working in applied and numerical mathematics as well as multigrid practitioners and software programmers. Book excerpt: We examine the effect of the step size on the convergence rates of multigrid, and present results of experiments on two parallel architectures: a four processor Cray Y-MP and a fourteen processor Alliant FX/2800. Our results demonstrate that multigrid can achieve very high parallel efficiency on coarse-grained shared memory machines, and that explicit methods are not likely to be competitive with multigrid based implicit methods on such machines."

Book excerpt: The development and testing of a parallel unstructured agglomeration multigrid algorithm for steady-state aerodynamic flows is discussed. The agglomeration multigrid strategy uses a graph algorithm to construct the coarse multigrid levels from the given fine grid, similar to an algebraic multigrid approach, but operates directly on the non-linear system using the FAS approach. The scalability and convergence rate of the multigrid algorithm are examined on the SGI Origin 2000 and the Cray T3E. An argument is given which indicates that the asymptotic scalability of the multigrid algorithm should be similar to that of its underlying single grid smoothing scheme. For medium size problems involving several million grid points, near perfect scalability is obtained for the single grid algorithm, while only a slight drop-off in parallel efficiency is observed for the multigrid V- and W-cycles, using up to 128 processors on the SGI Origin 2000, and up to 512 processors on the Cray T3E. For a large problem using 25 million grid points, good scalability is observed for the multigrid algorithm using up to 1450 processors on a Cray T3E, even when the coarsest grid level contains fewer points than the total number of processors.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper presents an efficient parallel multigrid solver for speeding up the computation of a 3-D model that treats the flow of a viscous fluid over a flat plate. The main interest of this simulation lies in exhibiting some basic difficulties that prevent optimal multigrid efficiencies from being achieved. As the computing platform, we have used Coral, a Beowulf-class system based on Intel Pentium processors and equipped with GigaNet cLAN and switched Fast Ethernet networks. Our study not only examines the scalability of the solver but also includes a performance evaluation of Coral where the investigated solver has been used to compare several of its design choices, namely, the interconnection network (GigaNet versus switched Fast-Ethernet) and the node configuration (dual nodes versus single nodes). As a reference, the performance results have been compared with those obtained with the NAS-MG benchmark."
