Book excerpt: The system 200 MeV/nucleon Au + Au was studied, giving full azimuthal coverage for intermediate mass fragments in the forward hemisphere in the center of mass system while measuring all the light particles in each event. The complete measurement of light particles (p, d, t, 3He, 4He) allows determination of the charge multiplicity of participant baryons, which increases as the impact parameter between the projectile and target nuclei gets smaller. This quantity was used to sort the events into groups according to impact parameter. It is found that peripheral collisions give rise to fragments with rapidities very close to the beam rapidity. It is also observed that the transition between the peripheral and central collisions is very smooth, with a gradual shift in the rapidities of the observed fragments away from the projectile rapidity. The total intermediate mass fragment multiplicity is found to increase with increasing participant baryon charge multiplicity. 7 refs., 2 figs. (LEW).

Book excerpt: Ions are atoms or molecules stripped of their electrons, so they can be accelerated by electric fields. They can be made to hit each other with low energy, intermediate energy, high energy, or very high energy; each energy range seeks to investigate different aspects of hadronic physics. Intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions explore the nuclei far from stability valley, the incompressibility of nuclear matter, the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear environment, the symmetry energy far from the normal density, and other phenomena. This has been an active field of research for last four decades. This is a book for entrants in the field. It is suitable as a companion book in a graduate course. For practitioners in the field it will be useful as a reference.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text book deals with many issues of nuclear reactions in contest with the heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. The main issues discussed in the book are Multifragmentation, elliptical flow, nuclear stopping and symmetry energy. These phenomenas can be compared with the happenings in the universe such as Supernova Explosion, Quark Gluon Plasma, Liquid Gas Phase transition, which were the basic processes at the time of expansion of the universe. Ultimately, the study of these phenomenas has made this book highly important and interesting for the researchers as well as master students working in the field of intermediate energies. In addition to this, the determination of symmetry energy for asymmetric nuclear matter, which is the burning topic in the present day research, is also explored in the present version of the book. In conclusion, the matter published in the book will give the readers the detailed analysis of the nature of the hadronic matter, which is the ultimate goal of all the theoretical as well as experimental nuclear physics collaborations throughout the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 129Xe-induced reactions on {sup nat}Cu, 89Y, 165Ho, and 197Au at bombarding energies of E/A = 40 & 60 MeV have been studied theoretically and experimentally in order to establish the underlying mechanism of multifragmentation at intermediate energy heavy-Ion collisions. Nuclear disks formed in central heavy-ion collisions, as simulated by means of Boltzmann-like kinetic equations, break up into several fragments due to a new kind of Rayleigh-like surface instability. A sheet of liquid, stable in the limit of non-interacting surfaces, is shown to become unstable due to surface-surface interactions. The onset of this instability is determined analytically. A thin bubble behaves like a sheet and is susceptible to the surface instability through the crispation mode. The Coulomb effects associated with the depletion of charges in the central cavity of nuclear bubbles are investigated. The onset of Coulomb instability is demonstrated for perturbations of the radial mode. Experimental intermediate-mass-fragment multiplicity distributions for the 129Xe-induced reactions are shown to be binomial at each transverse energy. From these distributions, independent of the specific target, an elementary binary decay probability p can be extracted that has a thermal dependence. Thus it is inferred that multifragmentation is reducible to a combination of nearly independent emission processes. If sequential decay is assumed, the increase of p with transverse energy implies a contraction of the emission time scale. The sensitivity of p to the lower Z threshold in the definition of intermediate-mass-fragments points to a physical Poisson simulations of the particle multiplicities show that the weak auto-correlation between the fragment multiplicity and the transverse energy does not distort a Poisson distribution into a binomial distribution. The effect of device efficiency on the experimental results has also been studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a collection of reviews of some of the recent developments in nuclear physics research at intermediate energies from across the globe. It especially focuses on the most essential aspects, such as multifragmentation and associated phenomena in nuclear collisions, with the incident energy region between a few MeV and several hundreds of MeV/nucleon. The topic of the book—multifragmentation—was chosen based on the fact that all heavy-ion collisions revolve around a fragmenting system, which is also thought to have a link to phase transitions. One unique and valuable dimension of this book is that it has brought together the research of several experts working in the field of intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions in various renowned laboratories of the world. It provides a thorough review of the recent developments in various related phenomena, especially multifragmentation, observed at the intermediate-energy range, both theoretically and experimentally. It extensively discusses the concept of nuclear symmetry energy, which is important for the nuclear physics and astrophysics communities. In addition, the book identifies potential research directions and technologies that will drive future innovations. It will serve as a valuable reference for a larger audience, including students who wish to pursue a career in nuclear physics and astrophysics.
