The Network has been functioning since the year 1996 and aims mainly to develop the level and quality of the discussion, to enhance the collaboration and coordination within the European academic community —encompassing the diversity of theoretical approaches in the area—, to promote intellectual understanding, and to create an appropriate institutional infrastructure and consistent financial support for academic research. The Network has also been consistently fostering the exchange and mobility of graduate students through summer Intensive Programmes and Marie Curie Fellowships so as to develop a critical mass of inter-disciplinary comparative research expertise, providing access to tutorials, methodology courses, and significant human and practical resources for a better understanding of research questions, conceptual debates, and methodological challenges. A western, developed socio-economic perspective can simplify conflicts in the so-called ‘Third World’ as the inevitable struggles of people who cannot coexist because of ethnic, religious or cultural differences. While acknowledging that many contemporary conflicts are characterised and influenced by these factors, this book calls for an approach to conflict prevention and resolution which mainly addresses the underlying political, economic and social causes. The conflict in Sudan, where narratives evolved from an interpretation based on religious differences between a Muslim North and the Christian South, provides a case study through which the author explores how most prevention and resolution strategies were based on flawed assumptions leading to poor results. By focusing instead on the underlying socio-economic inequality and marginalisation among groups she analyses the dynamics of the complex peace process to ascertain if and how economic and social rights were effectively included and implemented as a part of the peace agreement, including after South Sudan’s independence.

For over forty years, Charles Villa-Vicencio has been on the front lines of Africa's battle for racial equality. In Walk with Us and Listen, he argues that reconciliation needs honest talk to promote trust building and enable former enemies and adversaries to explore joint solutions to the cause of their conflicts. He offers a critical assessment of the South African experiment in transitional justice as captured in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and considers the influence of ubuntu, in which individuals are defined by their relationships, and other traditional African models of reconciliation. Political reconciliation is offered as a cautious model against which transitional politics needs to be measured.
