Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Analysis of Composite Structures enables graduate students and engineers to generate meaningful and robust designs of complex composite structures. Combining analysis and design methods for structural components, the book begins with simple topics such as skins and stiffeners and progresses through to entire components of fuselages and wings. Starting with basic mathematical derivation followed by simplifications used in real-world design, Design and Analysis of Composite Structures presents the level of accuracy and range of applicability of each method. Examples taken from actual applications are worked out in detail to show how the concepts are applied, solving the same design problem with different methods based on different drivers (e.g. cost or weight) to show how the final configuration changes as the requirements and approach change. Provides a toolkit of analysis and design methods to most situations encountered in practice, as well as analytical frameworks and the means to solving them for tackling less frequent problems. Presents solutions applicable to optimization schemes without having to run finite element models at each iteration, speeding up the design process and allowing examination of several more alternatives than traditional approaches. Includes guidelines showing how decisions based on manufacturing considerations affect weight and how weight optimization may adversely affect the cost. Accompanied by a website at www.wiley.com/go/kassapoglou hosting lecture slides and solutions to the exercises for instructors.

Book excerpt: Rapidly varying material and geometrical characteristics of composite materials and structures do not allow the direct study of their mechanical behavior even with the use of modern computers. This book is devoted to the mechanical design and optimization problems of composite structures, based on the previously developed asymptotic homogenization models and on the newly elaborated rigorous mathematical methods. It describes how to construct mathematically rigorous mechanical models to determine strength, stiffness, and weight minimization requirements, all important factors of design and optimization.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis contains three papers that focus on composites that pertain to a variety of structures commonly found in the aerospace industry. The first paper presents an investigation of the stowage and deployment strength of a thin carbon fiber-reinforced polymer shell capable of being rolled and stowed in a tight rolled configuration. The intent of this structure is for use as a segment of a larger deployable reflective aperture. This study involved finite element analysis of several laminates, coupon-level and full-scale prototype testing, which provided a much needed insight and benchmark of composite shells used in this manner. The second paper outlines the principles and mathematical backgrounds of functionally graded materials (FGM) in engineering, as well as a review of representative recent studies of such materials. Additionally contained in this paper is an example that demonstrates the advantages FGM structures can provide. This example involves the optimization of a sandwich plate with in-surface graded facings to increase the bucking load and fundamental frequency without any weight penalty. This study was performed by interfacing the commercial finite element code Abaqus, with the Sandia National Laboratories developed optimization toolkit DAKOTA. The third paper focuses on energy harvesting using a flextensional bimorph. In this paper, a new concept of utilizing piezoelectric bimorph harvesters in combination with a flextensional strain amplifier is featured. To demonstrate the energy harvesting capabilities using this concept, a nonlinear finite element analysis of the bimorph harvester was conducted. As follows from the analysis, the new concept offers a possibility to harvest energy in a broad spectrum of driving frequencies, eliminating the major weakness of standard bimorphs related to a narrow useful frequency range. The papers contained in this thesis have displayed significant advancements to their respective application. The concepts and solutions considered in the papers offer significant possibilities for a development of advance aerospace structures"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Book excerpt: In this study, design optimization and computational analysis are performed for advanced aerospace composite structures (chapter 2) and civil engineering applications (chapter 3). A novel stiffness-based framework for continuous infill pattern laminates is also presented (chapter 4) to enforce fiber path continuity across the domain. A new approach in the design of aerospace vehicles was recently introduced by NASA and Boeing researchers called pultruded rod stitched efficient unitized structure (PRSEUS). In the first part of the dissertation, a preliminary wing study of a general aviation aircraft that embodies PRSEUS technology is carried out. The computational study showed that the presence of pultruded rod stitched efficient unitized structure panels lead to decreased deformations in static and aeroelastic analyses, higher natural frequencies and flutter speeds, and improved crashworthiness. A very interesting civil engineering application of composite materials regards the hybrid bridge consisting of RC deck and laminate girders. Computational and optimization analyses were carried out for the first time to investigate the efficiency of six composite material systems and five different bridge spans, mainly consisting of E-glass and carbon fibers. The optimization outcome of the FRP/RC bridge outlines the appropriate composite material selection, cross-section geometry, and critical LS. Last part of the dissertation regards the design optimization of advanced composite structures with continuous fibers. The proposed approach introduces a novel framework for simultaneous optimized topology and fiber orientation of variable stiffness designs. Additionally, three new methods for the design of infill pattern are introduced that lead to reduced compliance and enforce fiber pah continuity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal aircraft design is impossible without a parametric representation of the geometry of the airframe. We need a mathematical model equipped with a set of controls, or design variables, which generates different candidate airframe shapes in response to changes in the values of these variables. This model's objectives are to be flexible and concise, and capable of yielding a wide range of shapes with a minimum number of design variables. Moreover, the process of converting these variables into aircraft geometries must be robust. Alas, flexibility, conciseness and robustness can seldom be achieved simultaneously. Aircraft Aerodynamic Design: Geometry and Optimization addresses this problem by navigating the subtle trade-offs between the competing objectives of geometry parameterization. It beginswith the fundamentals of geometry-centred aircraft design, followed by a review of the building blocks of computational geometries, the curve and surface formulations at the heart of aircraft geometry. The authors then cover a range of legacy formulations in the build-up towards a discussion of the most flexible shape models used in aerodynamic design (with a focus on lift generating surfaces). The book takes a practical approach and includes MATLAB®, Python and Rhinoceros® code, as well as ‘real-life’ example case studies. Key features: Covers effective geometry parameterization within the context of design optimization Demonstrates how geometry parameterization is an important element of modern aircraft design Includes code and case studies which enable the reader to apply each theoretical concept either as an aid to understanding or as a building block of their own geometry model Accompanied by a website hosting codes Aircraft Aerodynamic Design: Geometry and Optimization is a practical guide for researchers and practitioners in the aerospace industry, and a reference for graduate and undergraduate students in aircraft design and multidisciplinary design optimization.

Book excerpt: Composite Materials in Aerospace Design is one of six titles in a coherent and definitive series dedicated to advanced composite materials research, development and usage in the former Soviet Union. Much of the information presented has been classified until recently. Thus each volume provides a unique insight into hitherto unknown research and development data. This volume deals with the design philosophy and methodology used to produce primary and secondary load bearing composite structures with high life expectancies. The underlying theme is of extensive advanced composites research and development programs in aircraft and spacecraft applications, including the space orbital ship `BURAN'. The applicability of much of this work to other market sectors, such as automotive, shipbuilding and sporting goods is also examined in some detail. The text starts by describing typical structures for which composites may be used in this area and some of the basic requirements from the materials being used. Design of components with composite materials is then discussed, with specific reference to case studies. This is followed by discussion and results from evaluation of finished structures and components, methods of joining with conventional materials and finally, non-destructive testing methods and forecasting of the performance of the composite materials and the structures which they form. Composite Materials in Aerospace Design will be of interest to anyone researching or developing in composite materials science and technology, as well as design and aerospace engineers, both in industry and universities.
