Book excerpt: Much of our understanding of the relationships among geometric struc tures in images is based on the shape of these structures and their relative orientations, positions and sizes. Thus, developing quantitative methods for capturing shape information from digital images is an important area for computer vision research. This book describes the theory, implemen tation, and application of two multi resolution image shape description methods. The author begins by motivating the need for quantitative methods for describing both the spatial and intensity variations of struc tures in grey-scale images. Two new methods which capture this informa tion are then developed. The first, the intensity axis of symmetry, is a collection of branching and bending surfaces which correspond to the skeleton of the image. The second method, multiresolution vertex curves, focuses on surface curvature properties as the image is blurred by a sequence of Gaussian filters. Implementation techniques for these image shape descriptions are described in detail. Surface functionals are mini mized subject to symmetry constraints to obtain the intensity axis of symmetry. Robust numerical methods are developed for calculating and following vertex curves through scale space. Finally, the author demon strates how grey-scale images can be segmented into geometrically coher ent regions using these shape description techniques. Building quantita tive analysis applications in terms of these visually sensible image regions promises to be an exciting area of biomedical computer vision research. v Acknowledgments This book is a corrected and revised version of the author's Ph. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Shape in Picture" was organised with a twofold objective: first, it should provide all participants with an overview of relevant developments in these different disciplines; second, it should stimulate researchers to exchange original results and ideas across the boundaries of these disciplines. This book comprises a widely drawn selection of papers presented at the workshop, and many contributions have been revised to reflect further progress in the field. The focus of this collection is on mathematical approaches to the construction of shape descriptions from grey-level images. The book is divided into five parts, each devoted to a different discipline. Each part contains papers that have tutorial sections; these are intended to assist the reader in becoming acquainted with the variety of approaches to the problem.

Book excerpt: This book is intended for use in the teaching of graduate and senior undergraduate courses on multiresolution signal and geometry processing in the engineering and related disciplines. It has been used for several years for teaching purposes in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria and has been well received by students. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to multiresolution signal and geometry processing, with a focus on both theory and applications. The book has two main components, corresponding to multiresolution processing in the contexts of: 1) signal processing and 2) geometry processing. The signal-processing component of the book studies one-dimensional and multi-dimensional multirate systems, considering multirate structures such as sampling-rate converters, filter banks, and transmultiplexers. A particularly strong emphasis is placed on filter banks. Univariate and multivariate wavelet systems are examined, with the biorthogonal and orthonormal cases both being considered. The relationship between filter banks and wavelet systems is established. Several applications of filter banks and wavelets in signal processing are covered, including signal coding, image compression, and noise reduction. For readers interested in image compression, a detailed overview of the JPEG-2000 standard is also provided. Some other applications of multirate systems are considered, such as transmultiplexers for communication systems (e.g., multicarrier modulation). The geometry-processing component of the book studies subdivision surfaces and subdivision wavelets. Some mathematical background relating to geometry processing is provided, including topics such as homogeneous coordinate transformations, manifolds, surface representations, and polygon meshes. Several subdivision schemes are examined in detail, including the Loop, Kobbelt sqrt(3), and Catmull-Clark methods. The application of subdivision surfaces in computer graphics is considered. A detailed introduction to functional analysis is provided, for those who would like a deeper understanding of the mathematics underlying wavelets and filter banks. For those who are interested in software applications of the material covered in the book, appendices are included that introduce the CGAL and OpenGL libraries. Also, an appendix on the SPL library (which was developed for use with this book) is included. Throughout the book, many worked-through examples are provided. Problem sets are also provided for each major topic covered.

Many other spatial data structures that are non-hierarchical do not permit the generation of resolution hierarchies like the two above. One such structure is the run- length code (RLC), which has many powerful advantages that make the structure feasible in a GIS. For that reason a method for generation of resolution hierarchies based on RLC is needed. In this work an approach to the problem of generating a resolution hierarchy from RLC is described and discussed.
