Book excerpt: This work is primarily concerned with solving the large sparse linear systems which arise in connection with finite-element or finite-difference procedures for solving self-adjoint elliptic boundary-value problems. These problems can be expressed in terms of abstract variational problems on Hilbert spaces. Our (multi-grid) schemes involve a sequence of auxiliary finite-dimensional spaces which do not have to be nested. We approximate the solution using the largest (finite-dimensional) space. These schemes are recursive in nature: they combine smoothing iterations in a space with solving one or more correction problems using smaller spaces. Under certain circumstances, the solution to a problem can be approximated well using smaller spaces. Since the smaller spaces are required to have geometrically fewer unknowns than the largest space, the savings in computation can be substantial. Our general theory is discretization independent and can be applied to problems which do not arise from partial differential equations. As examples, we consider three particular discretizations of variable coefficient self-adjoint second order elliptic boundary-value problems. The first is a finite-element discretization on a convex domain in two dimensions. The second is a finite-difference discretization in one dimension. The last is a finite-difference discretization on the unit square.

Book excerpt: This volume deals with problems of modern effective algorithms for the numerical solution of the most frequently occurring elliptic partial differential equations. From the point of view of implementation, attention is paid to algorithms for both classical sequential and parallel computer systems. The first two chapters are devoted to fast algorithms for solving the Poisson and biharmonic equation. In the third chapter, parallel algorithms for model parallel computer systems of the SIMD and MIMD types are described. The implementation aspects of parallel algorithms for solving model elliptic boundary value problems are outlined for systems with matrix, pipeline and multiprocessor parallel computer architectures. A modern and popular multigrid computational principle which offers a good opportunity for a parallel realization is described in the next chapter. More parallel variants based in this idea are presented, whereby methods and assignments strategies for hypercube systems are treated in more detail. The last chapter presents VLSI designs for solving special tridiagonal linear systems of equations arising from finite-difference approximations of elliptic problems. For researchers interested in the development and application of fast algorithms for solving elliptic partial differential equations using advanced computer systems.

Book excerpt: The marching and generalized marching algorithms of Part I are extended to non-constant coefficient problems in which the elliptic operator is separable, once a suitable set of polynomials, which play a role analogous to the Chebyshev polynomials in the constant coefficient case, has been determined. These methods require O(n sup 2) and 0(n sup 2 log n/k) operations, respectively, to solve a problem on an n x n grid, and have numerical stability characteristics similar to their constant coefficient counterparts. Problems in which the elliptic operator is not separable are treated using a D'Yakanov-Gunn iteration in which a sequence of separable problems is solved. The rate of convergence of this iteration is shown to be essentially independent of n.
