The most profound essence of the Islamic movement established by Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan is the flame of reform/renewal. This characteristic is more prominent than other characteristics. Theology, ideology, and action model of Muhammadiyah are renewal leading to Islamic modernism or reformism. Those reform endeavors are actualized to break the stagnation of ummah by fostering a progressive Islamic teachings. In addition, Muhammadiyah has pioneered the system of modern Islamic education, health, and social services, community empowerment through Al-Ma'un movement, women's movement in the public through 'Aisyiyah, and reform works which revive the advancement of Islamic world and modernization of civil life. This reform is departed from the theme of al-ruju ila al-Qur'an wa al-Sunnah, namely a return to the Qur'an and the Prophet's Sunnah. The endeavours of purification of Islam to pursue the authentic teachings, as well as to establish a progressive Islam. Despite it frequently assumed to be ad-hoc, the span of twentieth century Muhammadiyah reform is a breakthrough. In the advance, directly and indirectly, it has been a state of mind for the majority of Muslim in Indonesia, including the previous oppositions.

Hadhrat Moulana advised them to commence the reading of the Fazaail-e-Aamaal to the children in order to encourage them to carry out the necessary aamaal (good deeds). He mentioned that we are teaching only the masaail (laws) of salaah, etc., in the makaatib but the children will not be encouraged to perform salaah by just learning the masaail. We will have to read to them the fazaail (virtues and benefits) to encourage them to perform salaah. Hadhrat Moulana Ya'qoob Saahib (daamat barakaatuhu) also advised that the Fazaail-e-Aamaal be simplified and brought down to the level of the children so that they are encouraged to engage in Aamaal-e-Saaliha (good deeds). Therefore, in the light of Hadhrat Moulana Ya'qoob Saahib's advice, Hadhrat Mufti Ebrahim Salejee Saahib (daamat barakaatuhu), the principal of Madrasah Taleemuddeen, initiated the simplifying of the Fazaail-e-Aamaal for the benefit of the children in the makaatib. This book is divided into 7 parts, viz. Stories of Sahaabah, Virtuesof Salaah, Virtues of reciting the Quraan, Virtues of zikr, Virtues of Durood Shareef, Virtues of Ramadhaan and virtues of tableegh. Apart of each section should be read out and explained daily to the children. This should be done 5 minutes before they leave for home. Comprehensive in content and conveniently organized, with the publication of this all previous works that discussed Islamic jurisprudence according to the Hanafi law become outmoded and soon fell into disuse. If revealed books are not taken into account, never has a book received so much attention as the Hidayah. This landmark publication of the Hidayah not only has been translated in its entirety for the first time but has been done so from Arabic, the language in which it was written. The author, Shaykh Al Islam, Burhan Al-Din Marghanani (d 593 AH/ 1197 CE) was considered to be the leading jurist of the Muslim world in his times. "The hidayah is justly celebrated as the most practical and useful summary compilation of Hanafi jurisprudence. It has been a standard text in the curricula of Islamic law schools since the 12th century. It was first translated by Charles Hamilton in 1791. A new translation into modern English has been long overdue. This translation by Imran Ahsan Khan Nyazee is both precise and straight forward. With his knowledge of Islamic law and jurispudence combined with his command of both the Arabic and English languages, he has conveyed the meaning of the original with great clarity.
