Book excerpt: A previous study presented interesting data indicating the ability of the Polarization Diversity Active Imaging techniques (PDAI) to measure polarization signatures of objects of simple shape (conical and spherical objects). Polarimetric signatures of such objects are obtained by applying a powerful decomposition technique, previously developed under earlier AFOSR contract. A complete description of the object in then obtained. Such decomposition can be used for detection, discrimination and classification of targets. This second phase has extended the study of the dynamic behavior of one of the previous targets (cone used as a re-entry vehicle mode.) By then rotating that sample target to make polarization movie, the evolution of the decomposed polarization signature can then the fully examined. The analysis performed for each position finally provides the dynamic behaviors of the target depending on either its orientation or the position of the detection system. The second goal of this phase was the development of a method for estimating the refractive index of a target from its Mueller matrix image. Our investigations show that the refractive index can be estimated either by using data resulting from the polar decomposition method or from the Mueller matrix image of the object after different steps of data processing. Such parameter is essential in order to progress in the understanding of these polarized high/material interactions.

Book excerpt: This final report describes experiments into Polarization Diversity Active Imaging (PDAI) performed at the Physics Department of the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Polarization Diversity Active Imaging illuminates a scene or target with a sequence of polarization states and then measures images of the polarization state scattered from a scene or target. These polarization images are then analyzed to provide additional details in the optical signature of objects by quantifying the object interaction with polarized light. These polarization images are then analyzed in the following sequence: (1) Measure the Muller matrix image associated with the scene, (2) Map the retardance, diattenuation, and depolarization images for the scene, (3) Estimate the plane of incidence and target orientation pixel by pixel, and (4) Obtain estimates of the refractive index of objects in the scene and other information relating to texture. With a successful Polarization Diversity Active Imaging apparatus, a series of polarization images would be acquired, the image would be displayed, and then we could overlay images of the retardance, diattenuation, depolarization, orientation of the surface normal, and estimates of refractive index. These additional images would be useful for image interpretation tasks such as clutter rejection, target identification, target classification, target orientation, etc. Polarization Diversity Active Imaging may prove useful for many difficult imaging tasks such as satellite imaging, plume/hard body identification, hard body/wake, unresolved objects, and overcoming camouflage. But this present contract specifically aims to evaluate if Polarization Diversity Active Imaging could measure the orientation of bodies such as satellites in space and estimate their refractive index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Up-to-Date Compendium on the Physics and Mathematics of Polarization Phenomena Now thoroughly revised, Polarized Light and the Mueller Matrix Approach cohesively integrates basic concepts of polarization phenomena from the dual viewpoints of the states of polarization of electromagnetic waves and the transformations of these states by the action of material media. Through selected examples, it also illustrates actual and potential applications in materials science, biology, and optics technology. The book begins with the basic concepts related to two- and three-dimensional polarization states. It next describes the nondepolarizing linear transformations of the states of polarization through the Jones and Mueller-Jones approaches. The authors then discuss the forms and properties of the Jones and Mueller matrices associated with different types of nondepolarizing media, address the foundations of the Mueller matrix, and delve more deeply into the analysis of the physical parameters associated with Mueller matrices. The authors proceed with introducing the arbitrary decomposition and other useful parallel decompositions, and compare the powerful serial decompositions of depolarizing Mueller matrices. They also analyze the general formalism and specific algebraic quantities and notions related to the concept of differential Mueller matrix. Useful approaches that provide a geometric point of view on the polarization effects exhibited by different types of media are also comprehensively described. The book concludes with a new chapter devoted to the main procedures for filtering measured Mueller matrices. Suitable for advanced graduates and more seasoned professionals, this book covers the main aspects of polarized radiation and polarization effects of material media. It expertly combines physical and mathematical concepts with important approaches for representing media through equivalent systems composed of simple components.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomedical optical imaging is a rapidly emerging research area with widespread fundamental research and clinical applications. This book gives an overview of biomedical optical imaging with contributions from leading international research groups who have pioneered many of these techniques and applications. A unique research field spanning the microscopic to the macroscopic, biomedical optical imaging allows both structural and functional imaging. Techniques such as confocal and multiphoton microscopy provide cellular level resolution imaging in biological systems. The integration of this technology with exogenous chromophores can selectively enhance contrast for molecular targets as well as supply functional information on processes such as nerve transduction. Novel techniques integrate microscopy with state-of-the-art optics technology, and these include spectral imaging, two photon fluorescence correlation, nonlinear nanoscopy; optical coherence tomography techniques allow functional, dynamic, nanoscale, and cross-sectional visualization. Moving to the macroscopic scale, spectroscopic assessment and imaging methods such as fluorescence and light scattering can provide diagnostics of tissue pathology including neoplastic changes. Techniques using light diffusion and photon migration are a means to explore processes which occur deep inside biological tissues and organs. The integration of these techniques with exogenous probes enables molecular specific sensitivity.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on polarization microscopy, a powerful optical tool used to study anisotropic properties in biomolecules, and its enormous potential to improve diagnostic tools for various biomedical research. The interaction of polarized light with normal and abnormal regions of tissue reveals structural information associated with its pathological condition. Diagnosis using conventional microscopy can be time-consuming, as pathologists require an hour to freeze and stain tissue slices from suspected patients. In comparison, polarization microscopy more quickly distinguishes abnormal tissue and provides better microstructural information of samples, even in the absence of staining. This book provides a basic understanding of the properties of polarized light, a description of the polarization microscope, and a mathematical formalism of Mueller matrix polarimetry. The authors discuss various advanced linear and nonlinear optical techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), reflectance and transmission spectroscopy, fluorescence, multiphoton excitation, second harmonic generation, Raman microscopy, and more. They explore the exciting potential of integrating polarimetry with these techniques for possible applications in different areas of biomedical research, as well as the associated challenges. Including the most recent developments on the topic, this book serves as a modern guide to polarization microscopy and advancements in its use in biomedical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retinal diseases are a major cause of blindness worldwide. Although widely studied, disease mechanisms are not completely understood, and diagnostic tests may not detect disease early enough for timely intervention. The goal of this research is to contribute to research for more sensitive diagnostic tests that might use the interaction of polarized light with retinal tissue to detect subtle changes in the microstructure. This dissertation describes the GDx-MM, a scanning laser polarimeter which measures a complete 16-element Mueller matrix image of the retina. This full polarization signature may provide new comparative information on the structure of healthy and diseased retinal tissue by highlighting depolarizing structures as well as structures with varying magnitudes and orientations of retardance and diattenuation. The three major components of this dissertation are: 1. Development of methods for polarimeter optimization and error analysis; 2. Design, optimization, assembly, calibration, and validation of the GDx-MM polarimeter; and 3. Analysis of data for several human subjects. Development involved modifications to a Laser Diagnostics GDx, a commercially available scanning laser ophthalmoscope with incomplete polarization capability. Modifications included installation of polarization components, development of a data acquisition system, and implementation of algorithms to convert raw data into polarization parameter images. Optimization involved visualization of polarimeter state trajectories on the Poincar♭̧ sphere and a condition number analysis of the instrument matrix. Retinal images are collected non-invasively at 20?m resolution over a 15ʻ̐ visual field in four seconds. Validation of the polarimeter demonstrates a polarimetric measurement accuracy of approximately ł̐ 5%. Retinal polarization data was collected on normal human subjects at the University of Arizona and at Indiana University Schoolof Optometry. Calculated polarization parameter images reveal properties of the tissue microstructure. For example, retardance images indicate nerve fiber layer thickness and orientation, and depolarization images (uniform for these normal subjects), are predicted to indicate regions of disease-related tissue disruption. This research demonstrates a method for obtaining a full polarization signature of the retina in one measurement using a polarimetrically optimized instrument, and provides a step toward the use of complete retinal imaging polarimetry in the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal disease.

Book excerpt: Optical Polarization in Biomedical Applications introduces key developments in optical polarization methods for quantitative studies of tissues, while presenting the theory of polarization transfer in a random medium as a basis for the quantitative description of polarized light interaction with tissues. This theory uses the modified transfer equation for Stokes parameters and predicts the polarization structure of multiple scattered optical fields. The backscattering polarization matrices (Jones matrix and Mueller matrix) important for noninvasive medical diagnostic are introduced. The text also describes a number of diagnostic techniques such as CW polarization imaging and spectroscopy, polarization microscopy and cytometry. As a new tool for medical diagnosis, optical coherent polarization tomography is analyzed. The monograph also covers a range of biomedical applications, among them cataract and glaucoma diagnostics, glucose sensing, and the detection of bacteria.
